2017 FR-S to get Electric Turbo?

I saw this article a couple days ago and thought it might be worth sharing. I think most publications generally accept the 2017 refresh will get a HP bump but this is the first rumor I've heard of an electric turbo. I don't know how likely that would be for just a refresh but it would be cool to see. Here is the article:

http://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/20...-rumors-specs/

The original source of the information about the power bump, among other changes, is in an interview with Toyota's chief designer Tetsuya Tada here:

http://www.motoring.com.au/news/2015...e-stakes-54828

At the very least I am going to hold out on buying my FR-S until the 2017's come out I think.

Dave-ROR 11-05-2015 07:09 PM

Ignore that website. Ignore everything until it's official.

MisterSheep 11-05-2015 07:09 PM

Not another one of these....

Don't even have to open the links to tell you that I don't believe it unless it's leaked through toyota.
@David the Gnome You'll soon find out that people on this forum do not take "rumors" lightly as we hear them all the time and not a single one has ever been remotely close to true because everyone wants to hear that the FR-S' will be getting a bump in power etc. etc.

And we were doing so well without any moroning.au crap. Now there are going to be 100 other "sites" saying there is an electric SC just around the corner.

Where have you been the last week? It hasn't been huge, but people have been making noise about this for a little while.

Oh I know I have heard but now that motoring has thrown it out there it is going to get even worse. The fun part is that for a change some other clickbait started it and motoring is just using their stuff and saying it was them. Sort of an unusual twist.
Hell they even stole the "spy" shots of the mule and threw their logo over them to make it seem like they were theirs.

One post and just to drop click bait? I say ban him. Fucking spammer

And no further activity since 6:07. No check back on comments, no go look at something else. Not unheard of but certainly unusual.

Other than that add a V6.

2017 FR-S to get Electric Turbo?
The answer is no

Tada said no WAAAAAAAAY Back in 2010, He said no in 2012, he said no in 2014.

Tada has given his reason on why the GT86 will not be turbo. Here is that reason.

Quote:

"tubros have lag, and it would hinder the driving experience"
There ample (reliable) sources saying no turbo.

all the sources suggesting there will be a turbo model are all rumors and speculation (i.e. UNTRUE).

So until you have official word from Tada or Toyota, The GT86 WILL NOT be turbo.

Will the 2017 model get a power boost? It's possible. Tada did say that the FA20DIT has plenty of potential to produce more power (That's why they built the Griffon). BUT that can be done by upgrading the engine internals. Even with that said we can only expect the increase to be 5-10hp because the GT86 was designed to be a fun, BALANCED, car. Not a fast one.

Sad thing is, this won't stop these posts at all.

There was an actual press conference of a Toyota Rep saying that there will be a slight increase due to less friction in the motor in the upcoming years.

Curious, how much would a e-turbo really make? 10-15 hp?

How involved is Tada nowadays with the 86? Leading up to the release and following the release he was very vocal (tons of media attention) as a great source of information and support but what has he said/done recently about our cars?

Well every other day when motoring.au talks to him directly he seems to have loads of info for them so he must be still involved.

Who cares? The 200 peak horsepower these cars make is pretty much perfect for an actual sports car. The real issue (which is nicely dealt with by forced induction) is the torque dip and general lack of torque. I'd be happy with just a few pounds of boost and a car that still ran reliably on 91 octane if it would get rid of the torque dip and give another 20 or so lb-ft of torque.

Okay, I've been watching this thread for a while, and I have to say this. The car could use more hp if all you're interested in is quick acceleration when flooring the throttle. I think, though, that concept is really flawed. I drove a Porsche 924 back in the 80s - yes I'm probably around T-coat's age. It developed peak hp and torque around 2500 RPM, and was very fun to drive. It had a top speed of a little over 120, had a 4-speed MT and by today's dollar cost roughly $40k USD. I looked it up. I think the problem a lot of people are perceiving with the 86 is more one of not knowing how to drive the car. The 86 is plenty fast if you understand how to shift. If you can learn to downshift smoothly, by actually learning to rev-match, this car can do just about anything quickly. I'll take a car that responds instantly to driver input and is this much fun to drive any day over something that is really fast only in a straight line for a mediocre driver who only knows how to use his right foot.

You're in good company. The car-is-fine-as-delivered crowd is the silent majority. I eventually got over tilting at that windmill.

TBH, FI kits are pretty damn nice. A few of my friends have them. I just prefer fuel efficiency to the extra zoom-zoom.

Here's an article with an interview with Tada in October from news..com.au. Don't know if they are a real news source though. If it happens the complaining on here will be crazy. I can hear it now, "Why so small of a turbo", "We wanted more power from a "real" turbo not electric". lol

http://www.news.com.au/technology/in...-1227587347443

Quote:

"With the 86 being on sale for over three years now, Tada-san said it’s due for a fairly heavy midlife update soon. This includes its exterior look, interior and finally an update to its 2.0-litre naturally aspirated boxer engine. But if you were hoping for a standard turbocharger, it’s still looking unlikely with Tada-san saying it would be “too easy”.
Interestingly though, he was very interested in the idea of fitting an electric turbocharger to the car."

An electric turbo? That would make me instantly look to a different vehicle.

Reads a lot like they pulled it from motoring.au.
This "Interestingly though, he was very interested in the idea of fitting an electric turbocharger to the car." is not a quote from him anyway (and is very poor writing as well).

If said at all it could have been more like:
Alleged reporter - "What do you think of an electric SC?"
Tada - "That is an interesting idea but there is no way we will do that"
Alleged reporter writes "Tada says is an interesting idea"

My imagined conversation holds just as much confirmed facts as the whole article.

Demandred7 11-09-2015 10:15 AM

I made the mistake of posting from motoring.au one time. Learn from others and just don't. Besides, an electric supercharger would be way better than a turbo. ;)
