Messed up downshift - how bad did i fuk up ?

Down shifted from 4 to 3rd and let the clutch out too fast (mid shift as it was cliping in to gear and it made two grinding sounds)

Now.. If the car is driving fine should i worry? Or would there may be chit fuked up that i cant see/feel?

Idk if it was like this before but now im noticing every gear is notchy (two pops in) but 3rd just kinda goes in (no notch. No pop just goes in)

hahahah the twins arent a Hyundai or a Kia. That wont break it. I did this like 50x's in one week until I learned the clutch. Dont worry unless you ride the clutch or dump it.

I also had issue with shifting from 2nd to 1st and not pressing clutch all the way down so it would kick 1st out or grind.

I had that problem but i stopped using first (untill recently) because it was the only gear i couldnt get smooth.

Is holding the clutch untill 4mph considered riding?

Trust86 11-01-2015 10:16 PM

1st gear is for taking off from a dead stop anyways. If I'm rolling I never downshift into first. If you do use first make sure you rev match it a lil bit and I promise you it will slide right in.

Edit: OP don't worry about it, consider it As breaking it in some more

If you holding it from say 60mph until you come to a dead stop in neutral or in gear, yes it's riding. Down shift until 3rd then you can shift to neutral and use brake if real slow...say 20mph. You should avoid using clutch as much as possible for a long term goal of keeping oem clutch. Remember, the clutch is a wear item, so the less you use it, the longer the lifespan.

1st gear is hard to get smooth. You gotta ride clutch a tad when accelerating to perfect it. I dont care for up shifting on 1st to 2nd anymore. Just practice in a empty lot. Youll get it soon enough!

Don't worry about it, try not to do it very often though as it is not ideal.

You would probably have cried if you heard the several mishifts I did (1-2 shift is notchy to say the least and gate can be hard to get into). Flooring from a stop (supercharger makes 1st gear very short lol) fast shift to 2nd miss gate super loud grinding, crying inside, shift to 2nd and pretend it didn't happen but know it did all the while hoping no one saw that

Depends on how long it takes you to get to the 4mph lol, I associated clutch riding more to rev than speed when clutch is released(although one does go with the other). Basically manual shifting is basically a balance point(think seesaw) between clutch and throttle. Ideally, you want to reach your clutch pressure point at about the same time as you reach the minimal throttle required (rev) to engage the clutch without stalling the engine. To make sure you know where the clutch pressure point is and to ensure you do not ride the clutch what I can recommend is practice taking off(from a flat surface not a hill) without touching the throttle.

Once you are able to do that all the time than you will know/remember where the pressure point is (muscle memory and subconscious) and you will know when to start giving a bit of gas on the throttle (basically the point where the clutch starts to inch the car forward and affect the engine's rev).

This has been "How to practice driving manual cars 101" Brought to you in part by Arby's. Arby's because you like to fight with your stomach

More of these posts?!?! Where do you guys come from???

But seriously, let me know if your going to part out.

3nl 11-04-2015 03:31 PM

It's a sports car, don't worry about the clutch. As long as you don't single it out for abuse it'll last plenty long. If you are balancing just above the stall point, you're going slow. And if your going slow, your not going fast so what's the point?

Put the car in 2nd with your hand on the shifter - step on the gas and let off and feel the shifter move around. Learn to do your shifts with the direction it naturally wants to move and you will never miss a shift until you get too carried away with your left foot.

MisterSheep 11-04-2015 03:54 PM

Did somebody say part out?!?!

paulca 11-04-2015 06:03 PM

Did you smell the clutch burning?

No? Not trying hard enough yet.

You can't drive properly and mindlessly take shots at car companies who have completely turned around their vehicles and reputations recently, please don't take advice from this guy.

FIAT has just been idiotic to take their small car image and purposely make them fat and bloated to (unfortunately) match what the US is looking for in a vehicle.

Most cars nowadays don't have major issues, you could maybe pick on GM and how a lot of their older vehicles caught fire and they are just now owning up to it.

@OP: Better post it to carfax. Diminished resale. :<)
