PTUNING Spec-SS Turbo System with GTX2867R option

We finally got around to testing a smaller turbo option for those looking for an ultra-quick responding turbo for street or track use, especially with the stock engine.

As most turbo enthusiasts know, there is no such thing as a one size fits all turbo choice. The power limit of this turbo is definitely lower than our standard GT3076R turbo. However, buyers will now be able to decide for themselves what turbo selection will suit their end goals.

We chose the GTX2867R turbo, because we felt that the powerband and power capability gap would be large enough from the GT3076R to make your selection much easier. We've tested the GTX3071R before and the powerband was nearly identical to that of the GT3076R, so we'll likely not be testing any more turbo options that sit between the two current turbo options.

For those wanting a GTX3582R or a turbo that sits between the two that we offer, we'd be more than happy to install and tune it for you.

Now for the dyno graphs. BTW, we're not really surprised at the results. This turbo spools up super fast with our turbo system and has ultra-quick transient response. The only downside is that low 400's whp is about the limit of this small turbo vs 450-500whp for the standard GT3076R. Unfortunately, you cannot have your cake and eat it too, but the option is now available.

93 Octane Tune (E9)
Notes: Tuned for around 10.5-11.0 psi peak. Also, the car made 338whp on 9psi and E26

E64 Tune.
Notes: The turbo is pretty much maxed out at just 14.5psi at redline. We could have made a bit more power on E85, but it's difficult to find in Northern Virginia. The powerband is pretty ridiculous. We're already at 200WTQ by 2,500rpms and 240WTQ by 3k rpms. :eyebulge: Lastly, if a customer wanted to, it would be possible to target more boost in the midrange for even more torque. We didn't do this since we're still running a STG1 clutch will slip past 310WTQ. Also, it was around 1:30am and we were all tired and done for the day. LOL

Low 400 whp is plenty for track!!! :) Upgrade (downgrade?) kit available for existing owners?

Yes, we'll be offering this option for existing customers. The good thing is that the package will only need to include a different turbo/trans mounting bracket, lower intake tube (3" inlet), compressor discharge hose, and of course the turbo. Everything else will bolt right up.

Should I be expecting ~260-270 whp at 6-7 psi on the gtx2867r on 93 octane? The power and torque curves look beautiful with the 10.5 psi, but I'm not looking to change out the clutch and add other supporting mods just yet. Better question is, do you have a more conservative tune on 93 for this set up?

E10 is standard across the US, so you can have your tuner tone down the tq until you decide it's worth it to replace the clutch.

Glad to see you finally have a smaller turbo option, and definitely the right size turbo.

Price will be $250 more for the GTX2867R option vs base GT3076R.

Also, is an injector/fuel pump upgraded needed if staying on 93?

We recommend our fueling package, which includes 850cc injectors, 4 bar map sensor and ecutek license.

http://www.ptuning.com/subdir/partno...=PTP-ENG-15005

You do not need to upgrade your fuel pump for 93 only injectors.

@Mrc@ptuning would the smaller turbo clear the stock sway bar?

Hmm, since I'm going full custom tune anyways I'll probably grab ID1000s and skip the basemap. Thanks for the info though

cookiesowns 10-30-2015 04:56 AM

Interesting. Any idea of turbo efficiency at around 8-10 PSI with similar boost curves the GT30 and GT28?

Want to see which turbo produces less heat. Assuming tuned similarly.

Ken@PTuning 10-30-2015 04:11 PM

We haven't tested a GT28. Both the GT3076R and GTX2867R make around 325whp on our dyno with the same mods (the shop car). The GT30 will be more efficient than the GT28 when you start approaching the 400whp mark as you'll approach the limits of the GT28.

I was using GT28 and GT30 interchangeably with the GTX turbos you guys offer. . I have no plans of pushing over 400whp, at least on stock block.

Would the GTX2867R be a better turbo in that case? I rather not have massive amounts of torque down low.

You won't have massive amounts of anything down low with either of these turbos. You are safe.

Darryljr11 11-05-2015 05:32 PM

Im considering trying out a GTX2971R or GTX2976R.

You can never have enough torque down low :) If you are planning to run 300whp to 370whp for daily driving, autox, track days then the smaller GTX2867R is a very responsive turbo and spools up very fast compare to the GT30R, but if you have plans to build your engine and run over 400whp, the GTX2867R will run out of steam on the top end after 400whp. We love the spoolup and low end torque of the GTX2867R for daily driving and it will probably suit the majority of our customers, but for those with built engines and bigger hp goals, you will need to go with a larger turbo like the GT or GTX30R.

how about a GTX2871R, the GTX2867R spoolup and low end torque is great, just need a bit more top end which could probably be achieved with the 71mm vs 67mm compressor wheel. Haven't tried any of the GTX29R yet. but you could be the first :)

Sorry, our turbo system cannot be adapted for the A/T without a complete redesign of the turbo placement--currently no real demand for such a setup. The stock A/T bell housing is massive, which doesn't leave much room for a turbo or the 3" downpipe that's included in our turbo system.

Hint, swap to a M/T frs/brz :)

Darryljr11 11-06-2015 01:21 PM

The GTX28 even with the biggest turbine housing will probably choke with my built motor. Might be the first to switch to the GTX29 this winter!

Alltezza 11-08-2015 12:10 PM

I know this may sound like a dumbass question because the turbo is smaller but is there any of that spooling sound that you get with the original GT3076R turbo?

Yup, it still has that awesome sound. In fact, because it's smaller, it spools sooner and more frequently!

Catted turbo?

So... is there any possibility to run this turbo kit with catted headers and, for example, a cat on the midpipe?

For us Europeans with sniff tests...

Yes and yes. Our turbo kit retains the use of the factory style headers. If you use the turbo kit with the stock header, you'll of course retain the factory primary catalytic converter. We've also had a few customers have us add a high flow 3" catalytic converter to our exhaust system that have deleted both factory catalytic converters.

Photobucket must have recently changed something as most embedded photobucket links are now broken all over the place. However, the image is still up, you just have to follow a link and view it on the photobucket site.
