automationLED: DIY LED interior + license plate conversion
For questions or tips, you could contact me by PM or email at automationLED@gmail.com
For the dome light on the car, it's very simple, you have 2 notches on the plastic cover where you would insert a flat head screw driver and lightly pry out the cover. It'll pop off and you will see the DE3175 bulb exposed. Be careful as the bulb might be a little warm to handle, so let it cool down for about 5 minutes. After it has cooled down, remove the bulb from the housing assembly and set it aside. Take the new LED bulb and insert it into the housing, if it does not light up the first time, remove it and turn it 180* and re-insert. The LED bulbs have a POS and NEG end, unlike the factory incandescent bulbs. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8145/7...9b05826cb8.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7245/7...7b4f9a5937.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8145/7...79c365d59c.jpg Package 1 dome light (similar brightness to OEM, bright white color) http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7221/7...63b64867dc.jpg Package 2 dome light (3x brighter than OEM) http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7237/7...e9106d2d09.jpg All done :) http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7245/7...39882d63c3.jpg The trunk light is very simple, you just pop open the trunk and you'll see a small white cover. Remove that and place aside (or you can leave it off, for a brighter glow). Remove the wedge bulb and insert the new one. For the license plate light, you'll access them from the inside of the trunk lid. You'll see the 2 light sockets on the inside, just twist and remove these lights, pull the wedge light and replace them with the new ones. Again, if they do not turn on the first time, remove them, flip it 180*, and re-insert. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7090/7...53f6f400ee.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5447/7...fb2dd826af.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5311/7...9f368085fa.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7233/7...2ac9197515.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5330/7...e21e0464dd.jpg For the reverse lights, you might want to do these last. Since you'll access the light sockets from underneath the bumper, it is very close to the muffler and you don't want to touch that when it's hot. After it has cooled down, reach from exhaust tip side of the lower valence, and feel for the light socket. Twist that one and remove the bulb, and insert the new LED. *NOTE* The CREE LED's might not seem that bright compared to the OEM light because of the way the light bulb is positioned. It points upwards towards the center of the car, and with LED's being a directional light, it will rely on reflecting on the inside housing to be bright. During the day time, it might not seem as bright, but at night time, it is a very nice bright white. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7073/7...06ba9b7fe3.jpg[/center] |

It would be great if you could also do a courtesy light diy on the door of the FR - S. Thanks for the write up!

The brz is easy. Just use a screw driver on the side of the door light and pry it open. Disconnect the light housing from the wire. Then you need to open the light housing by pressing on a clip to separate the two halves. Then pull out thw bulb and replace. Reverse the directions to put back in. The bulbs are the same as the licenseplate lights and trunk light

Order is placed

DIY for BRZ in-door courtesy lights
Thought I'd throw up the pictures from installing LED door courtesy lights here after someone asked about it. The pieces seemed somewhat fragile. I did it this afternoon. (pictures link to larger version)
I had some pry tools lying around from work on small electronics and iPods. They look like this: http://i.imgur.com/5tXEk.jpg I used a couple of them to get in between the door and the lens. The lens will pop out from the right side (the lights are identical on each side) I managed to bust one of the pry tools while doing this, so don't pry too hard on the wrong side: http://i.imgur.com/Xn7Pbl.jpg After it popped out, I pulled the light away from the door and pushed in on the gray tab in the center of the connector. Then you can disconnect the power and let the bulb cool. http://i.imgur.com/3kdMFl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/IRzgxl.jpg Once you've removed the light assembly from the door, squeeze the plastic part where my thumb is in the picture and gently rotate up. The part below has a little notch that has to be disengaged. After it's released, do the same for the small tab on the other side (gently!). Then pull the whole bulb cover off: http://i.imgur.com/6CIjRl.jpg Once that's off, stick a screwdriver behind the bulb to pop it out. Careful, it will go flying (location shown after LED was installed): http://i.imgur.com/TIVWXl.jpg Replace the bulb with the LED, but make sure the LED wires touch the contacts. Now is a good time to plug it in again to make sure the polarity on the LED is correct. Replace the plastic bulb cover. It will be snug now: http://i.imgur.com/iURcql.jpg Then reverse the installation in the door (pop the right side in last): http://i.imgur.com/DTFz7l.jpg http://i.imgur.com/TdOael.jpg That's it! Squeezing that plastic piece was a little nerve-wracking, but it's tough! |
And the results, using jjdrivesajazz's instructions for the rest.
All the lights are far brighter than stock, with the door lights especially providing more usable light: http://i.imgur.com/4ethpl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Cq97Gl.jpg Ignore the yellowish garage light: http://i.imgur.com/gSAzgl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/mRmYSl.jpg |

Read about our comparison when it comes to LED chip quality from other sellers
and see why our LED's are the BEST, read all about it -> here <- |
Do you think you'll have those clean turn signal bulbs in the next week or so, or will it be longer? Want to order but want to keep shipping down.

automationLED shipping my package out the same day as my order. received the bulbs today and installed them within 30 minutes. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical at first, but now I'm so happy that I bought a set. the glow that my brz has at night reminds me of my dad's new 750i---tons of presence on the road. the cabin lights were my favorite--a huge upgrade in light output over the stock lightbulb. i especially love how the interior of my car glows when looking from the outside (spaceship-like). i'll get pictures up tomorrow.
one thing that bugs me is how the godzilla strip wont stay mounted in the center of the housing due to a lack of empty platform behind it. i initially had it stuck to the empty platform on the left side of the housing but my OCD nature couldn't stand the lack of symmetry for more than a minute. now i have it adhered on top of the +/- terminals in the center of the housing but it's already shifted after 20 minutes of driving. will figure something out tomorrow i really wish i didn't' forget the include the reverse lights in my order. gotta pay shipping twice now =[ |

Think package 1 would be good enough or you still happy with the big godzilla panel? |

Installed everything(dome, trunk, and license plate ) tonight . Went very smooth . Everything was installed in less then 5 min, the dome light did have me scratching my head for a min until I realized the part that touched the two terminals was a spring. The product looks great when lite up, the trunk isn't a lot brighter but it looks better with the white light . Very happy thanks

I'm still extremely happy with the godzilla panel. Get package 2 and thank me later. I promise I'll get comprehensive pictures up tonight. Been so busy lately. Gonna order the reverse lights as soon as I finish this post. Car looks funny at the moment with the custom plate light and OEM reverse light being different colors. edit: just called jjdrivesajazz to find out which reverse light to chose since they offer 3. the brz and frs uses 921 (T15) for yall's reference. he also kindly offered to pay for shipping of the reverse lights since I forgot to add it to my first order from a week ago. I denied the favor of course since I know that business is hard nowadays and I don't mind paying another $5 to help a quality company out |

is there a thread here that says all our bulb sizes?
|
Installed almost everything just now.
Product: Solders are top notch and the car is really lit up well. Pictures do not do these bulbs justice. Customer Service: I had forgotten to add another license plate bulb so I Pm'd him here and asked to add another one to my order. Bulb was added to the shipment without delaying the package. Shipped Tuesday package was received on Thursday. |
The reverse lights are PITA, and the diffuser gave me nasty battle scars lol.
|
Don't know why everyone is having so many problems with reverse lights. I had the whole car changed out in less than 10 minutes
|
I have a quick question:
How does the dome light handle the dimming effect on the BRZ? I've seen some cheaper LED kits in my day and they do a little strobe until they run out of voltage, which might be kind of annoying. Do these manage to do like a tiered dim or do they just do a quick cut off.. or are they also affected by the strobe-to-off transition? |
I know for a fact there is no strobing. But haven't paid attention to if they fade out or not. Either way they make quality products and I can't wait till their turn signals come out!
|
nice write up! anything on headlights and daytime running lights yet?
|
They have headlight and fog light kits for the brz, not sure about the frs. And I think
The DRL on the BRZ are fine so I have not looked into it. If you have and frs, I'm sure they have the bulb size to replace with LEDs. |
