Getting popcorn ready for AT vs. MT thread of the week

Without even touching the differences in the car, the WRX is a CVT, which is another beast on it's own.

I've never driven a Subie with a CVT, however. Maybe you should try it out and see if you like the concept

EAGLE5 09-14-2015 04:25 PM

I have read the wrx auto is horrible.

Yes it's a automatic because its a going to be a daily driving car in NYC and sometimes (rarely) my dad might need to drive it.

Why are you asking us? What possible sort of answer could this forum give you?

The real question is: Which one do YOU want?

MisterSheep 09-14-2015 04:27 PM

Incoming flame war... :flame:

In this corner! Automatic! :fighting0040:
In the other corner! Manual!

Me-> :scared0016:

In all seriousness though, I would test drive them both, and see which one fits your needs. The real question is.. Do you want a 4 door AWD? will you need AWD for snow?
or do you want a 2 door coupe?

raven1231 09-14-2015 04:30 PM

Yeah, it's more so do you want an frs or wrx... The rest is pretty irrelevant.

ajaxthebetter 09-14-2015 04:40 PM

I feel like your username says it all.

Ignore my user name. I don't feel like creating another account.

Jfheisenberg 09-14-2015 05:36 PM

Its all up to you man, if you live in nyc (and on the east coast specially) a WRX will be most logical for AWD (better in snow and stuff)

Me, i live in North Jersey and yes i went for the BRZ because its amazing to drive and the twins are sexy as fck. Either way you should get a manual in whatever of the two cars you get IMO.

strat61caster 09-14-2015 05:51 PM

Who's buying the car?

JS + BRZ 09-14-2015 05:53 PM

Go RAV4 and never look back. RAV4, baby. RAV4.

MaximeT 09-14-2015 05:54 PM

If you ask frs vs wrx vs rav4. You need a rav4.
It's not possible to consider this 3 cars versus each others.

You mentioned your father, OP. You may have to go with what your father wants to do with his money, unless you can convince him otherwise.

If it's your own money, then do what you want.

Can't ignore it as it was your thought when you made it. If that has changed then you need to ask yourself why not us.

And I am gonna ask Ultra to hunt down and bear hug the first asshat too start the AT vs MT debate for reals.

I am not so sure.

I have always found that polling people who have no vested interest in me over big life decisions (especially financial decisions) was better than figuring it out for myself.

For example, I needed to poop earlier but wasn't exactly sure to what extent. I decided to ask an internet forum, now I am sitting here typing this in a diaper. All-in-all it has worked out well for me!

spicyricecake 09-14-2015 07:17 PM

Simple: 4 door boost or 2 door coupe. Are you gonna be taking corners a lot? Do you want a sports car or a sports sedan?

Not a very hard choice if you actually cross shop (I didn't cause I didn't know the wrx in the same price range!)

I'm trying to figure out what to do for dinner. Should I get a burrito or sushi?

EzyBrzy 09-14-2015 07:40 PM

Should I put Shell or Chevron gas on my BRZ?

Doesn't matter, as long as it's 87 octane. Forget what the manual says, I heard that from my friend's friend's brother who drives a Prius.

Wrx, your dad might have trouble gets in and out and you can haul people. Brz is sexy however

Dorb 09-14-2015 08:08 PM

You can't go wrong with either of them, but for a daily drive and in the winter and fun, I would go with the WRX Limited.

Hey! Old guys can get in and out fine. In fact historical on here it is the young guys that complain more.

why? 09-14-2015 10:06 PM

the real question has not been answered yet. Who's money is it?

isolato 09-14-2015 10:24 PM

Re: auto's vs. manual ...
I cannot possibly fathom owning a "driver's car" like the BRZ/FRS or WRX that begs for constant interaction between man and machine in an automatic. It's like neutering one of the most important aspects of what makes driving the car so enjoyable. You wouldn't cut your best friend's balls off, would you?

C'mon man. That's such a lame answer that gets rehashed again and again.

He's asking us because he wants to learn the knowledge that others in the same general field know. He'll use the info extracted from all the "possible sort of answer(s)" that this forum gives him and he'll be all the better for it.

eh. pressing the clutch with my left foot to change gears isn't that important to me any more. it was, when i first started driving. it's just one part of driving that i don't miss now.
i don't see it as neutering at all; just like i wouldn't call a great-tasting chicken dinner 'neutered' if i didn't raise and kill the chicken myself.

I guess if you consider your friend's balls his most fun aspect lol:bellyroll:

But I agree, you should buy a v6 Camry. Because that's basically comparable to the cvt wrx. If I had to go auto in a sports car(:barf:) I'd go ahead and get the softer wrx, because you're taking a main component of a driver's car away anyway, and the wrx will be more practical in your case.

Agreed. Been shifting gears since the beginning... cars, trucks and motorcycles. Now my BRZ automatic is letting me a little bit more relaxed, especially when stuck in rush hour traffic!

iwantafrs 09-14-2015 11:32 PM

Im getting a loan from my dad but i will be paying off the finance.

Braces 09-15-2015 12:01 AM

Having lived in the North Bronx for 2 yrs ... I would get the AWD WRX.

I think you answered your question. It's his money and he wants you to get a RAV4 plus he's hard to negotiate with. If you get something else he's going to bug you about the decision all the time even if you're "paying off the finance".

So who's name is this going to be under and who's going to be driving it everyday?

Why aren't you just having him co-sign on a loan for you if it's going to be yours?

The RAV4 doesn't get better gas mileage. EPA may rate them a bit better, but in the real world they're lower (check out fuelly.com)

Now that the softroad SUV is out of the way, you're left with a 4 door AWD car with lots of power but a crap CVT transmission or a 2 door RWD nibble car with a slightly better auto. Frankly I'd drive both to see (I never drove the WRX because looks wise it doesn't have anything on the twins IMHO).
