driving in winter

okay.. this is going to sound like a dumb question, but I have an issue. Do any of you drive your car year round? Like on the slippery roads in the winter? In snow?

Lived in Hawaii all my life. Moving to Carson City/Reno, NV somewhere and my car isnʻt selling. That means Iʻm going to have to ship it. No idea how to drive in winter and have been told a rear wheel car isnʻt a good option..

Advise please!!

zman 08-31-2015 02:24 AM

It's drivable but some winter tires will make you almost unstoppable.. If you're on a budget just get 2 and put them on the back

By " unstoppable" you mean I can drive on slippery roads?
Do you drive your FRS in the winters in Philly?

I disagree with the two tire approach. The budget option would be four as close to identical as possible used winter tires. Having winter tires in the rear will make it easier to get started but there won't be enough traction to turn properly. Two tires may work some or even most of the time, but you'll wish you spent the money when you lose traction before or during a turn. Especially if OP is as inexperienced in winter driving as the typical Hawaiian resident.

I drive my car year round with winter tires in the snowy seasons. I don't know that I'd call it unstoppable, as it's very low to the ground and the snow makes the car even more tail-happy than normal, perhaps even floaty, but it's very manageable. Just avoid giving it too much throttle in turns and realize that if the snow is up to the bumper it's going to turn into a plow with not nearly as much traction.

But there are no absolutes, so YMMV. I can only share my experiences.

I can't speak from personal experience - I will learn about RWD this winter as well.

I have run a Subaru with winter tires for the past few years. The difference from using all seasons vs winter tires was appreciable enough for me to never use all seasons again.

My brz is good in the winters here in Colorado with winter tires. The only time I had trouble moving was when we had a very dry powdery snow and couldn't get moving. If I dug out a bit I probably would have been ok.

Do not try it without good winter tires.

Winter tires make a massive difference in stopping distance, (which is greatly increased in snow,) as well as lateral grip.

I suggest ordering some fresh Altimax Arctics pre-mounted on steelies or cheap alloys from Tire Rack for winters.

Last Christmas/New Year week, I drove up to Colorado Springs from New Mexico in snow and ice on the stock tires. Despite getting stuck in an apartment complex parking lot, I really had no problem getting around.

BWilky 08-31-2015 10:17 AM

I have visited Reno, NV many times and had a friend who lived there for over 4 years.

They don't much snow in the lower levels, unless you head to the Mt. Rose or other ski resorts, you will be required to have chains for bad snow days.
You maybe able to get away with all seasons.....any locals want to weigh in?

lol and I dont know if this is new, but there are now similar threads listed at the bottom. Three different threads with the same exact name too smh

slipdog 08-31-2015 10:45 AM

The car is fine with winter tires. Driving in inclement weather on the stock summer tires (or probably any summer tire) is irresponsible and downright dangerous.

I never noticed that either! But I usually have a Google page open with all the search results for this site.

You know I always knew those were there but never once thought to point them out. Much easier than linking all the relevant threads.

If you're used to driving in Hawaii, this car is going to be terrifying in the snow. I drive mine in Connecticut in the winter as long as there is less than an inch of snow on the road. Anything more than that, I won't drive it. That's with snow tires, too. It's not a good winter car at all, despite what a lot of people here tell themselves. Get a cheap car with all wheel drive if you need to.

I totally disagree that it is not a good winter car but I have also driven RWD for most of my 40 years on the road so don't fall for the whole modern mystic about handling a car driven by the rear wheels. Any car can be driven in the winter with the right equipment and using the appropriate skills.
I passed many an AWD stuck in the snow or struggling to move in mine last winter and plan to do the exact same for the next 3.

Yep anytime I need to find something I just type FT86club and then whatever I am searching for into Google and I almost always find what I need.

Agreed. Even on the stock Turanza's, I've got stuck having to drive in a few inches of snow and the car was very manageable. Kept all the nannies on and drove with caution and really had no issues at all.

P.S. I am by no means recommending to go out driving in the snow with the crappy stock tires.

If you know how to drive, it is fine in the winter. If you have no idea what you're doing, it won't matter what car you're in. This isn't a truck. It's not "the best" in snow, but considering I drove all day through the 5th largest storm in Chicago history without issue, it really isn't as bad as you're making it sound. Your comment makes it sound like we're all "pretending" it is an ok car in the snow. All I'll say is I drove it through 4-6" of unplowed snow and I was fine, so maybe learn how to drive before insisting the car is useless in snow. There are plenty of pictures and videos in the other thread that completely disprove your statement.

Jfheisenberg 08-31-2015 12:36 PM

This will be my first winter with the BRZ too!, im definetly getting some blizzak tires for the winter. I might get wheels too but it depends on the budget

jawn 08-31-2015 12:39 PM

To save time:

"Driving in the winter is fun in these cars! Get snow tires!"

"These cars are not meant for snow and are dangerous!"

"You're wrong!"

"I couldn't drive it in summer tires, so this car is bad in snow."

"You're wrong!"

"I couldn't drive it in winter tires, so this car is bad in snow."

"But I could and it was great!"

And scene.

Cheap steelies. You don't care if they get wacked and they don't get packed full of salty slush that then freezes and give you some wonky vibrations.

Gear_One_Performance 08-31-2015 03:58 PM

Anything can be driven in the winter with the right tires and patience.

Spartiduck 08-31-2015 05:23 PM

If you get a huge dump of snow most all cars do not drive well, if your lower you will plow snow. Plan ahead and enjoy !

Wait what?! The car comes with Bridgestone Turanza El 400 which is an all season tire. Not a summer tire.

The real term should be "most season" tires. All seasons are not really good for all seasons unless you live where it doesn't snow, have ice or even actually get cold.

A soft one! Spend at least $500.

Most of us had the car come with Michelin Primacy HPs, which is a summer tire.

Not sure but my guess is you are fine. Might want to check the appropriate sub forum just to be sure though.
