Tomei EL Headers and Perrin 3in exhaust and CEL

So I just had these installed 2 weeks ago and a CEL popped up. Any idea where I should start to fix it? I am going to check the code later today at Autozone.

But any help on what people have done to fix this similar problem would be greatly appreciated.

Catless header most likely causing the code. Get it tuned and the tuner can fix it

Evil Rocky 08-24-2015 01:47 PM

It is catted

fika84 08-24-2015 01:50 PM

Still probably going to have to get it tuned to get rid of it. Who installed it? Have you asked them?

Freeman 08-24-2015 01:52 PM

Do you have a picture of the catted Tomei EL header? Wasn't aware tomei offered that and I can't find a picture of that anywhere. If it is catted and its of OEM density and not a high flow cat, then without the code there's no real way to trouble shoot

As others have said, it's likely the header. Even catted aftermarket headers can throw a CEL. Only way to fix it is with a proper tune.

I had a shop do the install. Do I need anything for a tune? Like a separate chip or computer for it?

When I ordered everything I asked for it to be catted and the receipts said catted.

You can either find a tuner near you and ask what they prefer. Or you can get an off the shelf tune and something like the Open Flash Tablet and flash it yourself. Will get you some extra power too.

Ask your tuner to turn the 2nd O2 sensor off. That how I did mine .

^This. I don't think Tomei ever offered a catted header for this platform ever.

Which vendor sells catted Tomei headers?

Do you have a pic of the header? Or I suppose a better question would be, is your cold start ridiculously, earth-shakingly, window-shatteringly loud? If it is, then you have a catless header, regardless of what the invoice says. I don't remember tomei ever offering an EL catted header for this platform.

The two most popular options for tuning are the OpenFlash Tablet and ECUtek.

The OFT is a small touchscreen device that plugs into your OBD2 port. It can monitor various engine parameters as well as flash tunes. The tune files for OFT are generally what they call "off-the-shelf," which means they're tunes that haven't been customized for your specific car and are designed to be safe across the vast majority of cars. Tablets are roughly $500 new, but you can find them used fairly easily.

ECUtek is a more advanced tuning option, but is also more expensive. To get started with ECUtek, you'll need a cable, a license, a tune file, and a laptop. ECUtek licenses aren't transferable; they stay with the car forever. There are some off-the-shelf tunes for ECUtek (like the Delicious Flash-n-Go series), but generally if you go ECUtek you should get it custom tuned. You can contact places like Delicious or Moto-East for remote tuning, or see if there's a reputable tuner near you.

as we can agree, dude you got juked because we are pretty sure tomei has never made a catted header for our platform. we can be wrong but pretty sure they have not.
they just wanted your $$$

The only problem with this, unless if I've missed something, is that both (some) ECUTEK and OFT force a "NOT READY" for the 2nd O2 sensor on catless tunes.

Illinois doesn't allow any incompletes or not-ready codes during emissions testing.

I'm no expert, but from what I understand, there are two ways to clear the header CEL. The first is to ignore the second O2 sensor, which forces the "not ready" status. The other is simply to disable the particular code which comes up. That's how my OFT tune is set up and I show 100% Ready.

:w00t:

Good to hear that there's an OFT workaround for that. I had issues with my last car and readiness checks, post-tune. I ended up having to switch back to a stock tune to get everything to show ready.

Just as a disclaimer, I'm only 75% sure I'm right on that. I would double check before making any decisions based on my rambling.

Dream20b 08-24-2015 06:35 PM

code is likely P0420 and caused by no cat, mine comes and goes. I have the same header.

Evil Rocky 08-25-2015 12:34 AM

Sorry for late reply guys. Was at work. My code is a P0420 and has to do with a exhaust leak according to autozone. I am taking back to shop and C if can get fixed. Also going to talk to them about the header purchase with what the receipt said.

Freeman 08-25-2015 12:34 AM

Before you do that open the hood and take a picture of the header. I have this horrible feeling you didn't get what you asked for

Pretty much what @Freeman said. Hope this all works out for you.

Evil Rocky 08-25-2015 02:37 AM

As long as my cel goes away and car does not give other problems not going to make big deal on the header purchase. Do appreciate all the quick reply and suggestions. Will be taking it in a week or two. Car is barely driven so not freaking out that I need to fix right now.

Will keep everyone updated on it and what was done for the car so hopefully can help other people fix problems too

Shinchu 05-18-2017 11:32 AM

my guess is... op went to place that lied to him, killed everyone and is now doing life in prison?

or he just forgot to update. curious though. I just bought a used tomei EL and there is no cat for sure lol I will just try an o2 spacer and see if that works. but I do plan on getting OFT eventually.

@Evil Rocky you still on here???

Evil Rocky 05-18-2017 07:50 PM

^^ did not kill anyone lol

But I did get fixed with a 02 spacer.

So it was in fact a catless header?

Evil Rocky 05-18-2017 09:46 PM

Yes it was, but the way it was run up through their computer it came up that way. But they are good peeps and still working with them

Turdinator 05-19-2017 02:58 AM

I am sorry to say even with a spacer it is likely your CEL will return.
