Plasti-dip ideas; help wanted (black FR-S)

Greetings all!

I've been sitting here all excited to see people do some really cool things to their fr-s with plasti dip such as the bottom of the front bumper, the sides, bottom skirts, mirrors, etc. It only makes me sigh because it looks so great on cars and I want to do some of the ideas so badly-- but my FR-S is black. I'm not quite sure what to do because I feel that other colors in these areas aside from black might end up looking too over-the-top. I did plasti dip my emblems and side emblems blue, but it came out looking like a crayola crayon so I'm quite disappointed. I feel that black doesn't have a lot of options, but I could be wrong. Any help/ideas would be appreciated. Pictures appreciated even more.

Thank you :)

Plastidip your car white.

I didn't mean plasti-dip the entire car or anything like that. I've just seen people plastidip that bottom grill piece which looks really good on the white or firestorms; I've seen a couple people dip the fender garnishes which look pretty good. I've also seen people dip a small outline of their front fender on the bottom lip. But with black, I feel that it's hard to do anything.

@Omglookitsjenn

Remember, plasti-dip is rubber so it's never totally smooth. So with that being said, you can get some nice effects using matte black against shiny paint but it takes some trial and error. Also matte and satin vinyl can look better, but all still need careful planning and a good eye for aesthetics.

Lastly, when experimenting with plasti-dip colors generally less is more on a black car. I love idea of mag-blue plasti dip wheels which is achievable also with trial and error.

If applied properly plasti-dip is durable and doesn't peel. Bad applications are what people typically see and bitch about (looks cheap etc). Go ahead and experiment, the stuff is cheap and can look good with care.

has anyone seen a plasti dip car in person?
looks cheap, looks fake, half the time, the crap is peeling off

why not look into vinyl?
better quality product and can still be removed if you get tired of it?

Spray painting tacky colors on a car is never a good move. Unless you're planning on some bad ass livery, just leave it be. Scion owners catch a bad rep for a reason.

Leave Plasti-Dip to the people who want to change the look of their wheels without actually powdercoating them. I see plasti-dip as a tacky "mod" to vehicles.. Most if not all plasti-dip looks pretty bad. Auto-Dip, is a new substance and I feel it should serve the same purpose as plasti-dip but with a more higher gloss finish. I considered using the Auto-Dip for a gloss black roof on my whiteout but I will be doing vinyl instead for durability.

Again - I'm not talking about plasti-dipping my entire car. just little things... :bonk:

I know a damn good vinyl guy in Charlotte. You should go that route instead. Plus a ton more color options.

This stuff is gonna be cool. See my crappy cellphone picture of my autodipped wheel. Don't mind the overspray on the tire, it was dark and I was anxious to try this stuff out. The overspray is no longer present. I plan to use this stuff on some of the interior trim pieces as well (color undecided).

Obviously whoever sprayed that Audi did a horrid job with the prep work. If you saw a paint job with bad prep work, would you say all automotive paint was terrible? No

Plastidip has it's place, and there's plenty of professionals out there who do a great job with it, but the rattle can plastidip usually turns out poorly.

If you are doing an emblem black that's one thing, but doing too many bits and pieces here and there starts looking trashy real fast IMO.

The new top coat stuff they've come out with seems to help with the "texture" issue from what I've seen:

Same thing goes for Vinyl, a terrible install will make the vinyl look terrible. An incredible vinyl install will make the car look great

Ours was professionally done by Vinyl Images here in St. Louis and looks like paint
