23.7 average MPG, is that bad?

Hi guys, i'm new to the forum. Just got my 2014 manual BRZ limited less than a month ago and so far i'm having so much fun. However, I've been a bit concerned lately, I previously had a 1999 BMW 323i and I see my self at the pump more often than when I had the bmw. On my dash, my car says 23.7 Average MPG, is this normal? I searched the forums and most of you guys are getting about 30 MPG. thanks guys

yelsew 08-12-2015 09:29 PM

Driving around the city, i get as low as 24 MPG average, and have gotten as high as 38 on the highway. When i first picked up the car i noticed that the reading was around 23-something, so i reset the average by holding the button in and now it reads the average for me. I typically reset it when i reset my trip computer after filling my tank, and that allows it to read the average for whatever trip I'm taking. Always take the reading with a grain of salt though, for it is not always accurate.

Aozora.BRZ 08-12-2015 09:41 PM

That is very low. The lowest I've had for the past year is 24.2 and I drive like a maniac most of the time, although below 5K rpm. You must be revving it high which means you are enjoying it. :D

Get a Fuelly.com account and phone app so you can track the real MPG from your gas receipts. You should be able to see my account from my signature and there you can find averages for the car/year from all the users.

That's just not true. If you really baby the hell out of it and drive 100% on the highway then maybe you'll hit 40, but I'd say 25-30 is the most common. I get 26mpg with about a 65/35 split between highway/urban driving. Do you drive mostly in cities?

soulreapersteve 08-12-2015 10:15 PM

~27 for me. Thats a good split between highway and city.

But on the occasional spirited runs where the car get's pushed.... good bye gas mileage. Lowest I saw was 19, which is still not damn bad with all things considered.

CB390248 08-12-2015 10:24 PM

mpg

I have a lifetime avg of 25.5 and I live in Philly (outside of center city) where I have a ton of lights and hills so I don't think it's abnormal.

aegisdrgn 08-12-2015 10:39 PM

I commute near downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica every day, stop and go traffic, and I get 23 mpg. You didn't tell us what kind of traffic conditions you experience, so it's kinda hard for us to say "OH GOD YOUR CAR IS TOTALED" or "naaaaah, don't worry about it, perfectly normal."

carma143 08-12-2015 11:29 PM

I drive around a very hilly coast most of the time, and average about 21-24 mpg. On the highways I'll usually average about 35 mpg (I go with the flow of traffic, which is usually in the mid-high 70 mph). I drive a manual and like to shift at around 5k.

edigeek 08-12-2015 11:30 PM

Thanks guys, i really appreciate. Also, i mean to say i noticed that some guys get 30 MPG, not 40. But still higher what I see. I'm going to reset the AVG MPG tomorrow, didn't even know you could do that

jawn 08-12-2015 11:31 PM

I get about 21MPG in 100% city, bumper-to-bumper traffic. Your mileage may literally vary.

spicyricecake 08-12-2015 11:37 PM

100% city for a while here too, and I'm getting 22 mpg usually. I wanted to see city driving mileage so I reset it. On the high way I get 30+ easily, and 27 combined.

Ultramaroon 08-12-2015 11:41 PM

First off, don't trust the computer. That thing is way optimistic. Your next opportunity for a little highway trip, top it off and reset one of the trip counters. At the end, even if only part of the tank was used, top it off again. Write down the distance travelled on the receipt and figure it out old school.

40 MPG? Shit, maybe with unicorn tears. More like 32.

strat61caster 08-12-2015 11:43 PM

I'm about 22mpg city driving, 30+mpg open highway cruising, pretty much dead on EPA estimates.

It is 100% dependent on your driving conditions.
My fuelly log:

http://www.fuelly.com/car/scion/fr-s

Wow, looking at it I haven't had a tank over 30mpg in like a year...

Futaba 08-12-2015 11:51 PM

38kpg so around 23.6mpg, on mostly busy city roads, havent checked what i get on highways!

Just depends on how you drive, how much the engine labors and how busy the roads are.

Aggressive driving style, high revs lots of fast pulls from lights will use a hell of a lot more fuel than a subdued precise and smooth driver taking care not to labor the engine and shift when needed only.

Additionally someone who drives alone with very little in the car will get more mileage than someone who drives with other people, or with the boot filled with shopping/tools/etc.

People in hotter climates will use more fuel because they are more likely to use the AC which in turn puts more demand on the engine and uses more fuel, additionally the hotter climate will make the radiator have to work harder to maintain a lower temperature and the air intake will be sucking in warmer air all of which reduces the performance of the engine, and thus efficiency.

Theres countless reasons and possibilities that will vary fuel efficiency in a car compared to another persons even when comparing the same model and age of car.

Given what ive read you seem to be getting about the right mileage for the conditions, i wouldnt worry about it

shiumai 08-13-2015 12:00 AM

I'm averaging about 19-20 mpg, surface street driving only.

steeloyangster 08-13-2015 12:23 AM

I average ~28-29 MPG but regularly bring it up to 6500K while getting on highways to let the engine breathe a bit. Very little city driving and mostly highways.

No one's mentioned it yet but making assumptions and not checking multiple variables can lead us down the wrong roads so I'm going to ask: What kind of gas are you putting in your car? If you're putting in either cheap gas (Wal-Mart, Costco, BJ's, etc.) and/or 87/89 octane then you'll definitely see worse gas mileage than if you are putting in 93 octane from a 'Top Tier' gas such as Shell or BP.

It could be just another myth but I consistently get gas from the same station. Try to find a high quality gas from a local station close to you and try to stick with them for a few fill-ups and see if it helps. Also, keep in mind your Bimmer probably had a bigger tank as well so you'd be at the gas stations less often. I'm usually filling up my WRX close to 400 miles versus me filling up my FRS at ~300. I usually don't push the needle too close to the 'E' unless I'm on long trips.

Hey don't shit on Costco! It is actually a top tier gas retailer. =)

http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers/

Mmmmmmm... $5 rotisserie chicken....

Well, back on topic, I heartily agree that part of the reason why it feels you are at the gas station so often is partly due to the tiny tank. Only 13.2 US gal capacity, 12.5 US gal actually usable.

I guess I need to work on my driving lol. My daily commute is from near Downtown to Koreatown and it's constant stop-go after work is out. Fuelly has me clocked in at just under 21MPG... I don't even go past 3000 RPM that often.

Sorry, wasn't aware of this. I just lumped these Big Club stores together. My bad. I guess I'll think twice when considering where I can get good gas. Thanks for the heads up.

Not good, not bad, not normal, not abnormal.
Mileage is totally dependent upon the type of driving (highway vs stop and go city) and your personal style (because racecar vs drive like granny). No two people have exactly the same of both so comparing mileage is meaningless.

Soclose09 08-13-2015 09:52 AM

I managed to get 45.5 before..I have a pic of it as well..but that was also hyper mile to hell outta it.

ScoobsMcGee 08-13-2015 10:01 AM

Keep in mind that the BRZ has a 13.2 gallon tank while the BMW had a 16.6 gallon one. It is very possible that you're visiting the pump more frequently while still using less gasoline.

tahdizzle 08-13-2015 10:56 AM

23.7 MPG sounds like someone is doing something RIGHT to me.

Chad11491 08-13-2015 10:59 AM

when I had 140 mile round trip commute in gridlock traffic I was getting 31mpg average (6mt). now that I've got a 10 mile round trip and my weekly drive averages 90% city driving I get about 23-24. Which is right on target for EPA ratings.

Jfheisenberg 08-13-2015 11:30 AM

My MPG average is 27.5 (as per the car's computer). When i got the car it was brand new and my MPG was 19 on average lol, it was because i was learning how to drive.

This is why you are seeing lower gas mileage.

I have so much fun I see about 18MPG.

If I have less fun, I see much higher.

Yeah, but you do a lot of driving... what's your fuel consumption?

By dash 35 mpg
By calculation 33 mpg
Tank and a half a week
98% highway with cruise on at 70(+/-) mph
Very aggressive on the on and off ramps (when no cops looking)
Pretty heavy foot on the rare occasions I am driving in the city
I pity the guys that are 98% stop and go.

I am old, work for an American company and one plant is so near the border that they don't even know metric so I do almost everything in 'Murican anyways. I am however fully bimeasuremental.

Keep the revs low, like shifting around 3000. Accelerate slowly. Coast whenever you can. Time your coasting so you brake little or not at all. Increase tire inflation.

Or grow a pair of balls.

Thats pretty much the same gas mileage I get expect I use back roads which I treat like highways anyway.

But the best gas mileage I ever got was a 4 hour trip that was mostly highway averaged 38 mpg. Had cruise control to around 75 mph I also had the crappy Prius tires and used Mobil 1 fuel economy for oil those helped quite a bit.
