4.56 FD Swap Parts and Labor :)

Just got back from getting the final drive swap completed by a local shop in the NW area. Got the ring/pinion and the install kit from weir performance for a little over $400

~

Found a shop in Portland, OR that had done SEVERAL final drive swaps on the 86 platform, and he's incredibly fair for his rates!
Got the entire labor complete for around $370
$300 for labor
$70 for supplies

It was done in a single day. I just need to change out the fluid in around 1000 miles after the gears have broken in. Absolutely NO whine at all from incorrect backlash. Entire car has more torque, and when this mod is paired with E85. I don't believe there is a better NA setup that you can do!! :bellyroll:

Just wanted to share my experience ;)

swarb 08-07-2015 04:59 AM

incorrect backlash? how much is the correct amount?

mrk1 08-07-2015 08:03 AM

I think FD changes are the best way to change the driving experience of this car, be it up or down.

Grip Ronin 08-07-2015 10:05 PM

Backlash would make a deccel whine and pinion depth would make and accel whine.. both are very important. i just took out my gear to prep for turbo.. it feels like my gears got so long going 4.1

mrk1 08-07-2015 11:59 PM

I installed MFactory gears and I got a slight whine all the time over about 50mph, MFactory said thats completely normal with there gears.

If anyone needs a spare stock diff to do a gear swap on so your car isn't down, I have like 5 sitting here lol

Or find a shop that is able to do the swap in one day ;)

Took @Ultramaroon for a drive out in the twisties outside of portland. He hammered through some of the gears and he loved it ;)

qwerty66 08-08-2015 12:13 AM

hey spitfire
how much for one shipped to Vancouver Canada?

Ultramaroon 08-08-2015 12:42 AM

It's quite dramatic. First gear is still necessary/usable but second is no longer too tall for tighter switchbacks. Second-third-second transitions are a joy.

The corn juice doesn't hurt either. :D

Well done!

Sigh...sounds like I HAVE TO add this to the to-do list

Sammakko 08-08-2015 03:12 PM

What's the original ratio? I don't memorize that stuff.

Original ratio is 4.1. Should be about a 10% increase of torque to the wheels, as well as an increase of 10% approx RPMs
80mph is 3800-3900 i believe?

I'll go check brb...

Aztec 08-08-2015 04:35 PM

Added a quick 0-85ish video so you can see how much the shorter ratio affects car :)

Car looks like it moves well. Thanks for the video, it is something I find strangely lacking from the community. Would love to see more acceleration videos from people.

stockysnail 08-09-2015 12:23 AM

I wonder if this would be too much for a supercharged car. I'd be constantly shifting. :) I was thinking down the road swapping to longer like 3.7 or something instead.

Short of swapped or boosted twins that is the quickest looking twin I've seen

mrk1 08-09-2015 10:57 AM

I have a friend who has a 5.71 and he easily out accelerates a vortech SC car.

5.71, that's crazy. Is it an automatic?

It's a tractor.

fika84 08-10-2015 10:56 PM

That would be fun to take a ride in!

Lonewolf 02-07-2016 02:21 PM

For the folks not wanting to go F/I this type of final drive along with a decent header and tune should make you enjoy the car much more (E85 takes it up another notch)

Carlitoz3 02-07-2016 02:55 PM

Where is everyone getting their FD?
Cusco kit is a little too much.

For the weir performance stuff don't you need a different carrier? mFactory also makes them as well for around $609

You don't need a different carrier. You just need a competent shop that can install it quickly in the current rear end. My shop was able to do it in 1 day. I don't think most shops can do that lol

Alltezza 02-07-2016 04:13 PM

That's unusually cheap do they normally go for that price? Especially labor?

I've seen FD gears go for like 800-1200 dollars. I thought labor work on a transmission would cost a lot more than that.

It's not the transmission, it's the differential.....:bonk:

a competent shop can easily do a FD swap in a few hours, Just find a reputable one in your area. May not be a bad idea for anyone considering this swap to look at American muscle type shops if you do not a tuner in the area. This is a very common mod done to v8 cars, and a diff is a diff... very similar in construction.
