Racing quotes, track quotes etc

Some of my favorites are:

"Racing makes a heroin addiction seem like a vague craving for something salty." -Peter Egan

"WOT until you see GOD, then brake." - not sure

"Racing is the finest mechanism for the disposal of money." -RR98ITR

"Racing is the act of turning money into noise."

"I like to start with toe-in in the rear then dial it out until I see GOD." -rice_classic

"Well my first 2 wives weren't into racing..." -Overheard at the track

now you go.

"Speed has never killed anyone. Suddenly becoming stationary, that's what gets you." - Jeremy Clarkson

"The best way to make a small fortune in racing is to start out with a LARGE fortune"

CSG Mike 07-23-2015 03:36 PM

Aren't you glad I'm into racing and not drugs?

TrqlessWonder 07-23-2015 03:38 PM

Any car that finishes the race, with all of its parts still attached, is entirely too heavy.

Pretty sure that's Colin Chapman

"Exhaust gases go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster" - Jeremy Clarkson

TrqlessWonder 07-23-2015 03:43 PM

leavemealoneiknowwhatimdoing - Kimi

That was very magnanimous of you, Felipe. When you get back here, I'll explain what magnanimous means. - Rob Smedley

DAEMANO 07-23-2015 03:48 PM

Senna - Describes "the zone" before it was "the zone"
-And suddenly I realized that I was no longer driving the car consciously. I was driving it by a kind of instinct, only I was in a different dimension.

Chip Foose - On his dad
-My dad used to design cars, boats and vans, ... I would sit next to him from the time I was 3 and copy what he was doing. I continued doing that until eventually it was easier for him to tell me to draw it than have him draw it.

Chip Foose - On designing cars
-I like cars. I couldn't tell you why. It's an extension of one's personality. It's personal freedom.

Emerson Fittipaldi - On safety

-When I began to drive Formula I in the 1970's, the odds of surviving was 7 to 1. Incredible high risks. The odds of surviving now are like 800 to 1.

Emerson Fittipaldi - On Colin Chapman
-He was the computer. I would have a dinner with him, if the car wasn't handling well on the Friday, and would explain to him what it was doing at different parts of the track. He would go back to the garage, and call the mechanics. And by Saturday morning the car would be fantastic. Only Colin Chapman could do that. Of all the engineers I worked with, all the team managers, Colin was a genius who had the intuition to do it.

Colin Chapman - On everything else
-Simplicate, then add lightness.

-To add speed, add lightness.

-You won't catch me driving a race car that I have built..

-Make the suspension adjustable and they will adjust it wrong -- look what they can do to a Weber carburetor in just a few moments of stupidity with a screwdriver.

-Any car which holds together for more than a race is too heavy.

-Accountants are the scorers of industry; they have nothing to do with playing the game.

-Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere.

stugray 07-23-2015 03:50 PM

I haven't been able to find it in years but I love Jeremy Clarkson's opinion that "all racing car driver's opinions are rubbish"

Coincidentally I think Tanner Foust is the weakest component of US TG when I last watched.

"There is a lie that all drivers tell themselves: death is something that happens to other people. And that's how you find the courage to get in the car in the first place. The closer you are to death, the more alive you feel. But more powerful than fear itself is the will to win." -James Hunt

Really? I honestly thought it was the unfunny "comedian".

Ok, so since so many great quotes have been up at the top I must add really stupid F&F ones because they're corny as hell

How has anyone not posted this one?

"If you're not first, you're last." - Ricky Bobby

But seriously, some from my favorite drivers:

"You must always strive to be the best, but you must never believe that you are."
- Juan Manuel Fangio

"The best classroom of all time was about two car lengths behind Juan Manuel Fangio."
- Stirling Moss

"There are two things no man will admit he cannot do well: drive and make love."
- Stirling Moss

"There are people who say: 'That was a really tough fight, I won by one second!' I want to win by 10 minutes. That makes me happy!"
- Walter Röhrl

And then these just crack me up:

"Cornering is like bringing a woman to a climax. Both you and the car must work together. You start to enter the area of excitement at the corner, you set up a pace which is right for the car and after you've told it it is coming along with you, you guide it along at a rhythm which has by now become natural. Only after you've cleared the corner you can both take pleasure in knowing it's gone well."
- Jackie Stewart (a pretty great dude for F1 and racing in general)

And there are a bunch of really funny quotes from Marcus Gronholm (WRC).
"In more than 3 words, describe your day today."
"Not very good...today"

"You seem to have the same pace as Mikko?"
"Yeah we have the same car, and same colors on the car...seems to go the same speed."

- Andrew

:threadjacked:

Which one is that? None of them are terribly funny (Tanner least of all) and even on the original TG the best laughs came from the either the well written jokes or the spontaneity of their interactions (which probably aren't so spontaneous, just hidden by the dryness that we Americans struggle to pick up).

I rather like Rutledge (watched him on Speed channel many years before TGUS) his openness and enthusiasm is infectious and after realizing Adam is an actor first I appreciate the almost non-enthusiast perspective from a guy who seems to be incredibly enthusiastic about cars, he probably has the quickest wit of the three from what I remember.

I think the biggest turnoff is many people expected and wanted British humor and I think it was smart that they seemed to drop it pretty quickly, like American vs. US Office, it's passable but needs to be really reworked to hit the right notes which is how we got Parks and Rec.

wparsons 07-24-2015 03:13 PM

Adam is terrible, and his laugh makes me want to punch him through the TV.

"Can't have two number 1's"

There are only 3 sports: auto racing, mountaineering and bullfighting. The rest are merely games.

Cant remember who, Hemingway or somebody

"Racing cars which have been converted for road use never really work. It's like making a hardcore adult film, and then editing it so that it can be shown in British hotels. You'd just end up with a sort of half hour close up of some bloke's sweaty face."
-Jeremy Clarkson

"If something goes wrong, look into yourself first -- what did I do wrong?"
-Niki Lauda

"Racecar driving is a lot like sex, all men think they're good at it."
-Leno
