Possible new Owner
Im going to look at a new 2016 FRS tomorrow and am considering trading my Cayman S if the numbers all work out.
If I decide to purchase the car are there any problem areas I should look at prior to taking delivery. The Cayman is a spectacular car but the cost of ownership is expensive. Career changes have led to less disposable income. But im still looking for a well handling car. |
For the 2016 models? I haven't read of any issues pertaining to those as of yet. Tagging @stevesnj since you are the only one on here that I've seen with the '16. Any issues you encounter upon delivery?

Unfortunately cars here in the PNW get rained on and of the two im looking at both have likely already been prepped. So getting an unwashed car is unlikely.
For me... not a terribly big deal as I usually buy lightly used anyway. |
Get paint protection film, mud guards, cam plate and all weather mats then you have a great start to keep it bone stock or ready for mods.
|
What is a cam plate? Doubt I will mod yhis car....lol

Here's the easy fix (this should be done on every manual twin -leaking or not): http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...64#post2199764 The plate is billet aluminum with a raised center that plugs the hole with a high temp O ring to end leaks forever. |

However, my 2013 has a cam plate and it hasn't leaked a drop in 2 years and 15,000 miles. "If it ain't broke ... don't fix it" may apply here ...... :) humfrz |

Not yet... <evil grin>............... |
A FRS from a Cayman S... i'd consider a STI trade over a FRS. Unless, you've already test drove the FRS and love it entirely! Its a beautiful car and well balanced but if you are used to speed... you shall find none here, unless you mod.
Personally, I'd try to get a used STI and a FRS. Probably 20k for a newish STi and 17-20k for a used newish FRS. I don't think 2016 is really worth the buy vs 2014-2015 model. Just my thoughts. |
Ended up making a deal on a 2015 Halo this morning. Thanks for everyones insight. Looking forward to reading up and learning more about this neat little car.
Feel free to point me in the right direction for the common newbie questions and save me the flames. Appreciate the link to the cam plate, I'll keep my eye on that to make sure no leaks appear. I've looked everywhere under the hood.... where is the turbo at?:-) |

Easy as pie to not get flamed. Research first, formulate your questions and ask in the right spot. It means the difference between: Exhaust sub forum- I am going to use my car as a DD with track days 4 or 5 times a year and I was thinking about the XXX header set up with YYY exhaust. Is there anything I need to watch for? And General section - Yo what is the loudest exhaust that isn't to loud but just loud enough for what I want that costs less that $50 and gives me 500HP. |

Thanks for the welcome. Mine was an 09 as well, it was a bittersweet parting, but just no longer practical. I feel like I made a good choice and am looking forward to learning where the limits are with the FRS . |
many of us have build threads, with videos, and you can see what you like also. That is, should you decide you need more power.
and welcome! |
Congrats on the new car, and welcome! Also a former owner of a Cayman, a 2008 S in Macadamia Brown.

I completely understand not wanting to modify a new car, but please believe me when I say that this is absolutely worth it for the improvement in driving

Any pics of this car you bought? I think you made an awesome choice and welcome! I'd wait to turn traction control fully off until you feel comfortable doing so. Seeing you coming from a Porsche that shouldn't be long away :P There also may be or not a shifter rattle after a few thousand miles. My '13 FR-S had it but not my '15. Not sure if this has been remedied on newer model years. The only way I know of to keep dealer from washing is preorder the car and specify no wash upon delivery. Good luck on keeping the car stock!

Pics or it didnt happen. :)

Thanks for the welcomes and info. Im off on a short vacation and have been reading up on OFT and lots of various build threads. Just educating myself at this point.
I will get some pictures up of the car when i return home. Im looking forward to just driving it. |
So far I just have the TRD quickshifter and TRD exhaust and enjoying both those additions. Just started a rebadge and make sure you use polish and wax or paint sealant right away. Good luck! I love my 2016. 856 miles in 3 weeks :P

Welcome!

Here is one I snapped before I drove her home. Yes, it's in the detail bay and the dealer washed it. The kid did a fine job and seemed to care about what he was doing.

I can understand either going up to a Cayman or coming down to a 86. It's called liking a certain "type" of car. I put the Cayman,Boxster,4C,MX5,86 in the same category even though some have better forward thrust standard but the price reflects that notion. Congrats on the 86!

Edit: maybe I have a different standard for my dealership, as my salesman has washed my car on his own, fixed the fallout/rail dust on my car (free of charge, I should add) and he's also an owner, along with many others at my local dealership. They're all awesome dudes there. |
