1GR-FE Swap
Hey guys,
Does anyone know of anyone who has done a 1GR-FE swap? Now before we get to the point of saying, just go with an LS(or whatever) I will have a 1GR-FE that I will be pulling out of my Tacoma and dropping an LS in it. I will have this 1GR-FE laying around. its a 4.0L V6 260HP and they are really solid motors. they handle boost really well too. im thinking the 60 HP gain off the top will be good and I think I can boost reliably to 350-400HP. I wouldn't doubt it if no one has done it. and it makes sense to go with a different motor if you don't have one laying around already. If so I will update this thread when I get more info on the swap. I will probably do it myself and post progress. |
i'd do a 2GR before a 1GR..

If I had a 2GR I would, but I'm going to have a spare 1GR collecting dust. |
I suppose one nice thing is it came out of a RWD application too, where as the 2GR did not.

Id have to look into it, not sure how much I can pull out of my 1GR. it may only have 60K miles on it but this is what Its coming out of.
https://www.tacomaworld.com/attachme...11-jpg.307427/ I have raced it once already and it has some good offroad miles on it. not sure how well it would sell with people knowing that. |
that's what craigs is for. you're gonna get lowballed anyway lol. cool truck!
|
Haha thanks and that's true but I have a conscience when it comes to things like that.
2GR does seem a lot cheaper. question is are they reliable enough to boost to the 350-400HP range. Also notice that the torque specs are higher on the 1GR and they hit their numbers at a lower RPM. from the offroad and truck world I know that is a good thing. Not sure how that would be in a car. Better lower end power might be a bit more "fun" around the corners. |
the 2GR is lighter, iirc.
check out www.monkeywrenchracing.com , they know a LOT about the 2GR. it's an amazing engine, with tons of potential. 300hp capable, simply by using a lotus ECU. |
Weight was one of my concerns. I haven't been able to find any weight specs for the 1/2GR engines yet.
Im also not looking to build another race car. My wallet is already suffering from my truck lol. |

as long as I don't spend as much as my truck is the goal. which shouldn't be hard lol. Im looking at a salvage title FR-S as well. In comparison I was thinking of getting a WRX STi. I think I can get a lot more out of the FR-S for considerably less. especially with a salvage title. By race car I mean I don't want to be in 100K :P |
Sell GR, buy LS turbo kit. Keep stock motor in 86

If I didn't have to stay NA for my race class I would. |
Low mount turbo under the engine, they wont see it. Out of sight out of mind

The GR line is pretty tall not sure it would fit under the hood. You would probably be better off doing an LS swap.
|
Id say go for it if it'll fit. You'll get rid of that torque dip thats for sure! haha.
|
HAHA, im already doing an LS swap in my tacoma. not sure i want to spend the extra for an LS swap plus its a "free" motor. Fitment is another concern i believe the 1GRs are taller than the others. would have to do some measurements when the motor is out of my taco.

the 1gr/2gr is too tall need custom oil pan and intake manifold
GR series great torque-y engines |

The longitudinal mounted engine is the 2GR-FSE. They are a little bit different. D4S vs regular port injections, static c/r, head design The FSE should be a better starting point, on paper. But it's funny, all of the mods/knowledge com from the FE model because it can be swapped into Elises, MR2s, etc :) I swapped a 2GRFE into my MR2 Spyder, and it was an amazing setup. 271 rwhp on a bone stock engine other than a lightweight flywheel, open K&N intake, and a decent exhaust (and I included all 3 cats) - this was using a Rav4 ECU. Had a great sound and torque curve. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4058/...6a53d309_o.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4070/...99bddda6_o.jpg |

2GRs are something like 380lbs. Not sure they'd fit in an FRS, they're pretty tall for the FRS hood.
|
If the 2GR is too tall I would guess the 1GR is as well. Im out of the country at the moment but once I get home next month I will do some measurements and get some rough dimensions to see how much space we are talking about.

I'm sure a good body shop could customize your existing hood to accommodate a taller engine, a LSX just barely clears at the throttle body.

......oooooor you could hack a hole in the hood and stick ITB's right the F*** up through it :bonk::lol: Quote:
Dual runner intake with 2 throttle bodies on front will allow you to eliminate that grossly tall intake manifold, which solves your height problem on that 60* V6 You're going to have to go standalone ECU anyway, why not flex the tuning muscles of any decent standalone? ... Below is the 1GR, showing the awesome port angle from the head ports. Ditch the vertical lower manifold and shoot the runners straight into the head. Ditch the single, scroll-style intake that sits on top of one of the heads and go dual. Below is a shot of the 3rd rail boostlogic R35 GTR manifold in duplicate. make the manifold as shown on the right, slam it down as close to the valve covers as possible, and run a single overhead fuel rail, or 2 fuel rails staggered and angled. The advantage is you can get a perfect straight shot at the back of the valve. Runnners should end in bellhorns if you have the time and money. Either way, match the port diameter to the runner diameter and reduce the plenum volume for NA. For FI, increase the plenum volume and run larger diameter runners, tapered if budget permits. The below picture won't work perfect - the runners are going to have to be angled longitudinally slightly because the 1GR ports aren't staggered far enough. |
Sell the 1GR. Drive around in stock '86 with hookers and blow from sale.

I have been thinking about the 2GR-FSE once the car is paid off and i have something else to drive. Check out this boosted one that Blitz did.
http://image.superstreetonline.com/f...ngine_view.jpg There is also the new 8AR-FTS which is the 2.0T that is coming out in the IS200t. 241hp and 258 ft lbs stock and it makes that torque from 1650-4000 rpms. With a little tuning and free flowing exhaust and downpipe that would be an interesting setup. Maybe Tom's will build a demo car with one in it. |
2GR-SFE is the way to go. Right now I'm looking at a beams swaps because someone has a complete kit for it but if I had a much bigger budget the V6 would be the perfect fit.

The 8AR-FTS is a 235hp 258 lb-ft 2.0 liter turbo engine designed by Toyota for their lexus models
I think the Mercedes designed infinity shared engine you're talking about is the M274 Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk |
Doing any engine swap on the basis of "I already have this free random engine" is seldom a good idea.
If you have done any swaps, you will know that the engine cost almost does not register once you add in all the other things that will take time and $$$$. Final value of the project may or may not factor into the matter, but "thinking-out-of-the-box" swaps are seldom worth much unless they are WAY WAY out of the box. I would counsel "Give this a go and let us see what you know." |
