Scion 2 year plan & First oil change

The scheduled first oil change is 7,500. Most of us would like to do the first fluid swap around 500 miles.

Anyone get their dealer to do the first oil change under the 2 year service plan or did you have to pay?

Fish 06-19-2012 09:57 PM

I think if its anything similar to BMW's maintenance plan, you would probably pay for the service. Usually these plans cover only scheduled maintenance, not the the stuff in between.

But honestly, I haven't read through the service boost thing yet.

Mr. Mcoupe 06-19-2012 09:59 PM

Is it easy to change the oil ourselves vs dealer on these cars?

Alphalfa86 07-01-2012 12:23 AM

I am a service writer at a Toyota dealership and if you would like your first service early all you have to do is show up and request it. There should NOT be any charge. You just have to understand the service is for 2 years/ 25k miles ( which ever comes first a total of 5 services based on toyotas recommended maintenence). I have had my car for a week now and have almost 500 miles on it looking into when i should do the service bc i have never had to worry about a new car break in. Hope this help

I work for Toyota too..In a different region. Our region is only giving 3 services. 7.5k/15k/22.5k. Is it different it different down there?

I had my oil changed at 1300 miles. I went paid for it out of pocket. I figure I'll bring it back at 7500 miles and have the oil changed/tires rotated on Toyota's dime.

My dealer told me regular service schedule only (every 5k) when I tried to get them to change it, so I did it myself.

I picked up the filter at subaru for $8, the crush washer for $1.50 and got some mobile 1 0-20w.

The change was very simple, but you need the proper tools for it. Ramps, and a torque wrench being the "rarer" of the tools (common if you like to tinker, but most car owners don't own these). It took me about 30 minutes and the hardest part was taking the oil filter off (it's really on tight from the factory).

eriktherod 07-01-2012 01:12 AM

The manual says 7.5k, but my window sticker says 5k.

Thats strange, is Central VA considered a diff region? My dealer does OCIs of 5k, not 7.5k.

All of VA is in the same region. Toyota released a bulletin about the 7.5k interval for the FR-S. I'll try to scan and upload it. Scion service boost will only cover the 3 services. I believe your dealer has the lifetime oil changes? Maybe that's how they're doing the 5k services...our dealership does the lifetime as well but were strict on the 7.5k interval.

Yea, they do have lifetime oil changes. I'd like to see the bulletin, if you dont mind posting it

I think the full TOYOTA car line has moved to fully synthetic oils. They now require oil change every 10k miles, with a 5k-mile non-oil-changing service. That's why the offer is 25k/5 services. While for the FRS, it still follows SUBARU's 7.5k-mile-service convention.

According to my interpretation of the service book, you get first 3 services (corresponding to 7.5k/15k/22.5k or 1 year and 10.5 month) free for the FR-S.

Alphalfa86 07-02-2012 01:13 PM

I was finally able to look at my national history that shows what they will cover oil change wise.
http://ddcp.toyota.com/CP2/template/homeTemplate.faces
It is 3 services at 7.5k 15k and 22.5k.
I wish my dealer had life time oil changes, I work in service and still have to pay almost full pop for my services

The dealership I bought from offers it's customers free oil changes for life (of the car.)

ft86Fan 07-11-2012 07:43 PM

Does anybody know whether I can just get the filter and oil from the dealer and do it myself instead of them doing it? It'll be even better if they can just give me 3 oil filters and the oils upfront and call it a day.

I agree. I don't want my fr-s in the hands of greasy little techs itching to do some sideways action in MY sports car. That's for me to do... Sucks when you can't trust people...

It's to cut down on warranty claims and for individuals to build a rapport with the dealerships. Build a rapport, continue bringing the car in for maintenance and purchase of new vehicles. The only real 'maintenance' that is done is three oil changes--or a $150 value.

It has little to do with the goodness of their hearts. :D

I think Gen meant:

- reduce warranty claims
- keep people coming to the dealer to sell new cars

Mine says that too but I think remembering the dealer telling me that 5K was for the other scion vehicles except for the FR-S.

5,000,001 stories about:

a) change it asap, make sure no debris

or

b) gotta use the stock oil as long as possible because its good for the engine

Well, FR-S10, I think what we have here is a "old school" vs. "new school" (or old, new engines vs, new, new engines) thing working.

(that outta get ol dttaz all twisted up .... :D.)

Back in the day, when engines were machined, lots of metal shavings were present with a new engine, thus many felt it was a good practice to flush out the "break in oil" after a thousand or so miles ..... to get the shavings out of the oil and most that settled in the oil pan.

It's my understanding that modern engines are machined closer and produce much less by-products of the parts getting used to working together. Thus, a longer interval before the first oil change.

The use of synthetic oil extends the interval even longer.

So, ya wanna be old school or new school ... http://www.runemasterstudios.com/gra...mages/wink.gif

I find it quite funny that dealers recommend as low as 3k oil changes when it is on the customers dime. But if it is a free maintenance program its 7500+. Was in waiting room and this lady just got her free oil change on a VW Passat and they told her the next one is in one year or 10k miles.

:bellyroll:

Clembo 10-09-2013 07:24 AM

Supposedly, the factory fill is different from the Toyota full synthetic used at the dealers and helps with the proper engine break-in. Metal shavings? Debris? That's why there's an oil filter.

Unless you're going to the track or drive under the severe conditions described in the owner's manual, 7.5 months or 7.5K miles (whichever comes first) is the recommended interval.

I don't know of anybody who ever had a problem when following the recommended intervals in ANY car unless there were mitigating circumstances.

Oh, and the 7.5K interval is because of the boxer engine - for most cars today using full synthtic, the normal interval is one year or 10K. On some high-end cars the computer monitors the oil and tells you when it's time to change based on the conditions. I imagine this will spread across all product lines eventually.

That's why you should just do a used oil analysis with TBN. No thinking required! Most stock engines can easily handle 7,500 mile intervals.
