This car does NOT make me look cool...
So, I've had my FR-S for about three weeks now, and I'm really glad I bought it for the way it drives, not the way it makes me look.
I'm talking specifically about getting in/out of the car. Anyone else feel like a clumsy idiot every time you try to crawl out of it? If I was 25 and thin, I'm sure it would be no problem. But I'm not. I'm 45 and carrying two decades of pizza and beer around my middle. So when I get out of the car, I look like a walrus trying to haul itself out of the water. It's a ridiculous process of banging my feet on the bottom of the door, scooting my butt to the edge of the seat, banging my head on the door frame, and sort of chucking myself out of the car, often with an audible grunt. Not that I'm trying to impress people in parking lots - I don't really care very much what other people think. And of course I could fix this by going to the gym. But will I? Of course not. I just thought it was sort of funny and ironic that such a great-looking car has the side effect of making me look so clumsy. Anyone else have this problem? |
I'm 24 and thin and I look like an idiot every time I get out. Age and build has nothing to do with looking like an idiot when exiting.

Get some leftover smoke bombs from the fireworks stand.
Park in the far end of the lot and appear magically out of a puff of colored smoke. (was going for pink, but that would be making assumptions ;) |
56. Mid weight. Lowered car. Zero issues getting in or out even with smoke in one hand and coffee in the other.

I used the "no carb diet" and lost 40 lbs in 4-5 weeks and have kept it off for 7 months now. NO additional EXERCISE was performed over the course of the weight-loss. (I barely get any exercise at all). I did this by taking (almost) ALL processed sugar from my diet. No bread, pasta, candy, ice cream, etc. I eat fruit & yogurt for breakfast, big salad for lunch, sensible high protein dinner (steak/chicken & veggies). Minimize the carbs you DO eat after mid-day With the Salad, watch what dressing you have, the "mandarin chicken salad" from Wendy's has more carbs than a big burger mostly because of the dressing. And my other car is a porsche 914, so if you want to talk about a "low car that you just sort of roll out of"... HTH |
23 yrs. old, 5'11 155 pounds, slammed car, I lookED exceptionally retarded trying to fold myself out of this car. I'd rather look stupid crawling out of this car rather a POS rust bucket of a car.
|
you think this is bad,
check older aged gentle man crawling out of a Ferrari, better yet a Lambo Countach. i think it's the price you pay with the lower sports cars and don't worry, it is a cool thing to do haha |

But then.....that would sort of make you look cool if they did that. |
Everyone thinks I'm a gentleman for walking around, opening the door, and helping my 52 y/o wife out of the car. But the truth is, I just don't want to stand around for 5 minutes waiting for her to extricate herself, especially if she's in heels and a skirt.

Same weight but 4 inches taller. Lol. I look like a spider monkey crawling out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
lol I think you guys just need to practice more...left leg out, grab steering wheel and push. Just as easy as getting out of a sedan for me.
|
Ive never had any issues getting in and out of this car. But reading some of your struggles had me laughing. Especially the walrus, beer and pizza.
|
This post cracked me up :D
|
Leather seat covers will help A LOT.
I'm 32yrs, 6' and 160lbs. It wasn't exactly a struggle before but the grippy seat upholstery and tall bolsters certainly didn't help. Easier done than said now. :) |
OP, I do a little spin everytime I get out of my car. Try that and see how it makes you feel. :P

butt goes in first and swings my legs in...same thing in reverse exiting the car....lower back injury 5 yrs ago (sprained ligaments in spine)...yuh so that doesn't help with aging...soon to be 54...but life's short so who cares if someone sees me struggling to get in n out of car....LmaO!:D

Swing your legs out, use your arms to brace against the door, and gracefully catapult yourself out of the vehicle (aim for the bushes). My wife has issues getting out though - the door just doesn't stay open (it tends to close itself) and she's on the petite side, so the door weighs as much as she does... |
 ......... yes, I can identify with that ...... :(
When I go up to the grocery store ...... the lead cashier sees me driving up ..... she signals all the girls .... that I have arrived. They stand there, waiting for the "old man" to exit his FR-S ...... and watch and laugh at me as I "fall" out of my car ....... :bonk: My Army training usually kicks in, so I tuck my shoulder and do a PLF (Parachute Landing Fall - for you non-military types). When I recover, I grab for a cart in the parking lot ...... and proceed on to the store entrance ...... as if nothing happened. I am 72 years old and yes, I'm out of shape ……:sigh: humfrz |

Im 22, tall, and thin. Still hit my foot on the door from time to time and dont always seem to gracefully exit the car haha! Its just the way the car was designed it seems lol.

Be grateful, this thing is like a Bently compared to the Lotus Elise.

That low CoG struggle. I've had the same issue in the past. Now I put one hand on the door sill and arm on steering wheel after a 90 degree pivot. Seems to be a good approach.

The trick I found is to fall into the seats. Much easier. When you're getting out. Turn, and then fall back out. But I'm also 26, and 5'4 so... yeah. Hahahahahaha

To get in, I sit down and swing both legs in. To get out, I swing both legs out and stand up, with my hand on the seat bolster for leverage. No problem. Quote:

I started getting a mild pain in my left knee the first months I had the car. I was putting all the force in that leg to push myself out without looking dumb.
After learning that the door sill padded area is meant to use your hand to help I have no problems. One leg out and push myself up with my arm from the sill to exit gracefully. |

Getting in, I drop the rear in first then pull the feet in. If I can't get the door all the way open, the right foot goes in, then I shuttle step and sit down, pulling the left in. I never use my hands getting in. Getting out, left foot goes out, hand goes to the back of the door sill where Toyota/Subaru were gracious enough to put a soft pad, and just sort of roll out to a stand. I tell MomHawk this is all part of my exercise routine! Hey @ichitaka05 maybe you should add a "getting in and out of the car" speed contest to the FT86 gathering! |

Made me laugh. For the last 40 years, my fleet hs always included MG Midgets, MGBs and Miata. The act of "falling into" and "folding out" is second nature even at 56 years old.
That said, I have never had a woman in the car that did not make a comment about getting out and how they did not like that bit. I doubt that women make up a significant part of the market for this car. |

I hear you man...
You do have to master the following Jedi moves... 1) Drop left hand down - palm flat onto the door sill... about directly below where your left shoulder is.... you'll be putting a bit of your overall body weight as you.. 2) Swing your left foot up-and-out of the cabin... deftly MISSING the lower portion of the door panel so you don't scuff it up.... some dexterity of the foot such that you can do some deft toe-point to miss the soft plastic is a must... 3) Plant your left foot on the ground... as you put weight on your left hand (on door sill) and push up/out of the cabin... while 4) Making sure you do a quick head-move to avoid knocking your noggin on the top of the doorway... 5) As you are moving up and out, you'll need to do a quick left-foot re-plant as your center of gravity shifts "hard left" as you complete the "FT 86 Cabin Exit Move." May the force be with you! Passengers... exiting from right side... reverse a bit... using your right hand (palm), etc, etc., etc.... |
Obviously some of you guys haven't watched this tutorial. It is a must for new FRS/BRZ owners.
