Is frs good with dogs?

So far the frs is hands down the best driving car ive test driven to replace my r53 mini. However, I'm worried about practicality as a daily driver, especially with my 45lb bully mix. I was thinking I could make an Ecoboost mustang work but the frs has me concerned.

Anyone cruise with their dog? Is it easy to get a dog in the back seat?

microbionic 07-16-2015 07:50 AM

my shelti comes with me allot, i have a blanket covering the back seat and bought the oem arm rest so she could walk over it better to get out of the car.

Depends on your dog's training and experience. Has it driven MT before? Does it know how to deal with RWD? I would say take it out to a parking lot and let it drive for a bit before hitting the streets.
@Choco needs to field this one.

Rear end driving or sniffing?

Don't have a dog but judging from the pics in the Show Me Your Pet thread a pile of people don't seem to have any issue with dogs in their car.

I don't think you'll have any problem with a 45lb dog as long as it doesn't want to hop around a lot.

Since owning the 86 I've taken both of my Newfoundland dogs (clarification for @Tcoat) for rides. Here's Bella getting ready to climb in the back seat to go for a ride. She was just shy of 150lbs. She would lay in the back across the seats with no problem.

And I have an 80 pound Great Pyr-Golden mix that loves to ride in the back... Except for the interior changing to beige.

solort 07-16-2015 10:18 AM

I have fit a couple of foot long dogs in the back seat with an order of onion rings without a problem. And the dogs had chili AND cheese....

fika84 07-16-2015 10:31 AM

My 50lb border collie sits in the front seat on a blanket every once in a while and leans into the corners with me. :) It's definitely dog friendly.

Lol same here!

I have a 70lb golden changing out my interior. I just threw one of those large Costco pet beds with the seats down and he's fine. He hates the front seat because he's forced to sit up, meaning less stability.

Fortunately my dogs match the interior of my car so you can't really tell until you try to clean it!

D_Thissen 07-16-2015 11:42 AM

You should be fine, 45lbs isn't that big of a puppy. Lets see some pics of the 4 legged friend :)

A3r0pusH 07-16-2015 11:54 AM

80ish lb Samoyed...he left hair EVERYWHERE, but fit just fine with the back seat down.

Chaetagnath 07-16-2015 12:12 PM

My dog does fine in the backseat (~70 lbs). I put cushions on the seats to flatten it out a bit for him, and a dog seat cover over those which covers the seat back and seat cushions to minimize hair buildup. Invest in a good hand vac.

Whatever you are going to get, dont get a vw. Seems like the dog is doing a fender roll.

The dealers didn't want to let my dog test drive but maybe they'll Let me try his Bed in the car. I also keep a Kirkland bed in the car.

chriswian 07-16-2015 01:14 PM

I once found a dog that ran away (Pit bull) at a gas station. My girlfriend insisted that we take the dog back to.his home at first I was hesitant however the puppy demonstrated he was well trained so I took him.
Long, long story short the 86's back seats are small even for a dog, and even 2 months after this happened it is still very difficult to clean the seats even though the dog was well behaved also the car moves very fast on corners this made the puppy nervous. Either get some seat covers and a way to relax the dog or consider other options

My current set up FYI.

Simple dog car mat laid out in the trunk and the bed in the center.

I do this for longer trips with the dog, but with a 25lb beagle, she sits up front with me in the passenger seat normally. If your dog isn't too giant, you can just toss him/her in the passenger seat as long as they can lay down (or not, if your dog is like mine and likes to "captain the ship" and lean through all the corners sitting down)

Make sure you put something down on the seats because even the black hair is very visible and sticks to everything. Forget to put down a blanket or something and your entire cabin will be covered in hair - I dig hair out of my shifter boot all the time.

My dogs love the front seats best. My German Shepherd especially loves the front, very comfy for him. They sit pretty still in the front. I normal have them on a harness and a doggy seatbelt. Once I had to brake really hard cause a off leash dog ran in front of my car, braked so hard my dog nearly fly out the window.

Also, do not have windows down while driving with shedding breeds in the rear... furnado inside the car!!! :eyebulge:

(sorry too many pics lol)

Not mine, but I heard these things work pretty good.

Not for my 70lb golden...lol it worked well for a while, but his weight eventually ripped the end that attached to the front seats.

And that, ladies and gentlemen is why I referred the question to Choco.
Know your experts.

Am I hearing correctly the back seat is normally accessed through the center?
Does that tear up the console?
I'm not crazy about him tracking mud, snow or whatever through the passenger seat after a hike.
I'm so used to letting the dog in through the hatch in the mini. Blankets in the back and the front seats stay clean (well some hair flows up there)

I think my dog could handle sitting in the passenger seat but I don't think he could lay down on it which would make long trips Tough (occational 3.5 hr drives t my parents' house) I'll have to see how far the front seat moves back for sitting on the floor in the front

I was think about these but how would the dog get in a frs with this? The door doesn't open that wide and not sure this would allow the seat to fold forward correctly. Never thought I'd say this but an rx8/Saturn/veloctor 3rd door would be nice

The dogs enter like how a human would enter the back seats.

Whining and complaining the whole time?

JonoF 07-16-2015 08:21 PM

My dog (45 lb beagle) rides in the back seat almost every day. I covered the back seat with a fabric shower curtain and black towels to keep it clean. I tried buying a dog seat cover but it fit very poorly. I just fold the front seat forwards and he climbs in, the only difficult part is buckling him in. He also gives me a back massage through the seat as I drive.

Mine usually hops in from the trunk but occasionally likes to jump in from the driver seat/center console if I leave my door open and look away lol.

Either you pull the seat up every time, sacrifice your center console, or sacrifice your rear bumper. Rear bumper may be saved with a protective sticker but never tried it.

DimSumHero 07-16-2015 09:46 PM

My Shiba freaking hates going to the back seat passenger seat only for him

My Yorkie fits but he's a 15 lb dog though.

As members stated, its decent. I dont recomend swing style cover, however.

These are best http://www.brookstone.com/webassets/...00/793997p.jpg

Got one after dog started shedding like no tomorrow and after xgf threw up in back seat. X <$20 at Walmart.

I have a 60lb Border Collie/German Shepherd...and he doesn't like the front seat. He seems more comfortable in the back seat, but I haven't tried putting the back seat down and letting him sit in the trunk. I'm gonna try that soon and see how it works.

suzyj 07-24-2022 08:32 AM

We got a German Shepherd pup in March. He’s now 6 months old and nearly 30 kilos. He hops in to the back seat and curls up on a dog bed with his head on the centre console. We live about 100km from where we go for training, so he does 2 x 100km trips each week, which he really loves.

Today I had to transport a toaster oven as well as Max, so I folded the seat down. I think he likes the flat bit better, though I need to rig it up so he can still clip into the seatbelt.
