A/C Vent Not Snapping in.....

I removed both A/C Vents, and then removed the trim ring around them to Plasti Dip them white. Passenger vent and trim went on without a hiccup, Drivers side is another story. Trim ring snapped into place, Vent however seems to not want to set correctly. Any ideas? I've tried spinning it in different spots and the only spot it fits, is the problem Im at. See the pics below and give me your input:

It does only go in one way, it also takes a little force to get it in. I usually give it a whack with my fist quick.

Is there a marking on the side that goes in for you? Mine has the Subaru Logo on the top left. I giggled when I seen that logo on the inside of the FRS

IIRC there is a little "tab" on the vent and a cutout in the spot on the dash where it snaps in.

Theres 3 tabs......

sprintertrueno86 07-15-2015 01:16 PM

Make sure it's lining up correctly. It doesn't take much force to snap it back in.

Is anything broken here as to why it WONT snap in?

86Hiro 07-15-2015 01:49 PM

I 98% think its lined up, correctly but no matter how hard I push it in, that one side wont stay in

humfrz 07-15-2015 02:09 PM

Maybe you busted the tab off when you pried it out ..... ??

Did you on accident, switch the right and left vents .... ??

Super glue time ...... ??

I compared both vent holes, and vents themselves, both are there 100%.....Makes no sense the passenger one snaps into place easily, and yet the drivers one is being a biatch

G-awesome 07-15-2015 02:18 PM

hmm...when I plastidip my ac trim pieces, I didn't take off the entire vent. I just pulled out the trim piece.

Did you try rotating the part to see if it clips in any other way? Since the ac vent sits at a slight angle to the dash. Or..when in doubt, just mash the sucker back in in clip holders. I I took a bunch of trim pieces off and on many times and the hard plastics can surprisingly take a beating.

This.

86Hiro 07-15-2015 02:32 PM

No I did not. The driver and passenger vents are not the same. Passenger side gas a slight angle on the plastic housing, different from the drivers housing where as that one is flat

86Hiro 07-15-2015 02:36 PM

Would anyone like to volunteer to show their drivers side vent opening to make sure mine isn't broke somewhere?

sprintertrueno86 07-15-2015 03:24 PM

Try pushing in that a/c funnel. Maybe it's getting caught to it when you push the trim piece in making it not snap in place.

86Hiro 07-15-2015 03:33 PM

It gets installed as one whole piece though....Trim ting on the vent housing tunnel and then snaps into place....suppose to anyways

Shady195 07-15-2015 04:40 PM

I apologize I was speaking only of the trim piece not the entire vent. I have not removed the whole vent assembly like that.

Not gonna pull it off when you can't get it back on but I have the parts and service manual at home I will take a look and see if it goes into that sort of detail.

Things used to be so simple...I remember when all of my car's interiors were assembled at the factory with TEK screws... :(

On a serious note. Plastic is fussy. Just get comfortable, maybe with a cup of coffee, get some really good light and just stare at it for a while. That's what I do. I always find the trick-or the damaged part eventually...

Hell they used to have slot screws.

I think you have the rotation wrong. I recall the thicker side facing left and the thinner facing closer to the mirror. Turn it around and try again in different angles.

A/C Vent Not Snapping in.....

The passenger side trim ring bezel is the only one that has a thick and thin side to it. The drivers side is symmetrical all the way around. Correct me if Im wrong here

Husker BRZ 07-15-2015 06:22 PM

So out of curiosity, why did you pull both pieces off? You can just pull the vent ring off without removing all of it... All I did was pop the vent ring off, wrap it, and pop it right back on.

Because I didn't want to break a tab off the trim ring, or bend the edges. But that leads me to this now haha

Yeah I actually broke one of those tabs but since there is like 4-5 of them it still snaps on and stays perfectly fine thankfully! Hopefully you're able to get it figured out!

86Hiro 07-15-2015 06:36 PM

Im sure Im overlooking something or....something. I'll give progress updates for sure

86Hiro 07-15-2015 07:13 PM

Okay so after cursing a few times, and getting mentally frustrated over and over, I tried pushing in a little harder and the tab that is exposed in the pics above, snaps in, and when I let go, it comes out.......What the fudge?!? The tab is clearly unharmed, and the edge of where it snaps onto isn't bent or broken....The fuh!!

Tromatic 07-15-2015 07:23 PM

Try a little WD40. Being a snap-tite car, most of those pieces have a maximum limit regarding how many times they can be removed without failing, which is about once.
