Aug 1st at Portland Raceway PNW Subaru meet with autox and FR-S/BRZ class

The next big event for out BRZs and FR-Ss is August 1st at Portland International Raceway. They have an autocross with a class for all BRZ and FR-S, in addition to the other car classes. Makes it more fun running all the BRZ/FR-S as a group. :) They have dog related stuff, vendors, car show, drag racing, a costume 5k and more!

Tickets and info here:
http://www.bignorthwest.com/

I'm in the autox so come out and race with me. There's a late morning group and an afternoon group. They are supplying the corner workers so all we do is race and enjoy the even in general.

Someone last year actually did that. They cut out a Subaru sticker and put it over their Scion badge. ;)

Pssshhhh... Just turn the Scion badge around. Backside says Subaru.

Xtream 07-14-2015 12:56 AM

I'll be in the autocross.

I did it last year and it was a blast

Bobby D 07-14-2015 05:46 AM

That's on my bday so maybe I should finally treat myself to a day off and finally come enjoy one of these things...

Sounds like fun, but I'll be at the neighbor's house:

Post up those time slips, looking for Doug to represent the step-child division.

I'll be going to this for sure. Anyone not going willing to borrow a helmet or two? :D
Or a place to purchase one for cheap haha

I'm sure someone will share but they do have lots of loaners for free if I remember correctly.

Buy yourself the best and best-fitting helmet you can afford. Then never loan it to anyone and never drop it.

How much is your brain worth?

stockysnail 07-23-2015 04:56 PM

Cycle Gear in Portland typically has clearance helmets for cheap so I'd try there if you want to buy your own helmet. Motorcycle helmets will work for car racing, plus if you ever venture into being on a motorcycle.

Big fat screw found in my tire and the tire is toast. Had to order a new tire this morning but they said it's coming from Philly and will be 5 days. I really hope I get the tire back by Friday so I can race Aug 1st! ;(

Currently running my winter tire in place of that one with summer RE-11a on the rest. The car moves all over the place even when doing simple stop and go from a light. The traction is that different. It's a very weird experience!

stockysnail 07-28-2015 12:02 AM

FR-S and BRZs... how many are coming from this thread? I need some competition in the FR-S/BRZ autox class. :) 10 runs for $60 premium ticket that comes with lots of goodies. There was a 10 runs for $40 option but that sold out but didn't come with any extras.

Just put a temp plug in it for now. Save the new tire until it starts leaking again. ...if it leaks again.

I'll be autocrossing mine. Look forward to seeing you all!

Sorry. Depending on how close the puncture is to the sidewall, the crew at any America's Tire Co. will fix you up by dismounting the tire, patching and plugging for free in the hopes of getting your new business. Also, they can get any tire, not just those listed on their site, and price match or beat Tirerack.

Good luck at the auto-x. A few tips since I think you said you've not done auto-x before but if so then you already know: Walk the course and squat down to your eye level when seated in the car to establish sight lines. Auto-x lines are tighter than track day lines. The rear tire will pass closer to the cone than the front. Keep looking forward to the next gate. Trust your tires, they're better on an auto-x circuit than you'd think. Start with higher pressure than track day setting, they'll only gain about 6-8 psi at most. Check pressures after every run and bleed off in line. Push until you spin, no shame in that and nothing will happen except for rubber dust everywhere. You have the seat belt anchor that will be worth a few tenths. A quarter tank of gas should do, but you'll have reserves in the can. A wheel spinning start will often lose you time compared to a small clutch slip starting from torque peak instead of redline. If he's there, talk with @Rio, I'm sure he'll share his speed secrets and maybe even ride along. Start hydrating the night before and bring lots of water, going to be a warm day.

Kick ass, your instant-on s/c will be a huge advantage. Hope you can post GoPro thrills, should be fun.

Hole's probably too big for a plug, plus it's on the edge and Discount tire has my wheel.

I've done autox about 4 times. Last year I did the Big NW autox and got 2nd place on my last run. Supercharger does help. I don't have a GoPro but if anyone wants to let me use their GoPro I'll be sure to use it.

I will be at the OR SCCA AutoX event in Packwood, WA this weekend. PIR's south paddock is awful so I hope you guys are inside this time. If it is in South Paddock keep an eye on the repaired tire between runs. We call the South Paddock the RallyX paddock. LOL

Good luck! It looks like war between you and Perry Keller. The first time I won a Solo regional championship it came down to the last run at the last event of the year. Luckily, the night before I went to the drag races for fun and learned the peak torque launch method that I think made the difference.

Yeah, that South Paddock is treacherous. It takes commitment and cajones. I once saw an M3 enter the dip at the corner of the concession stand all crossed up and it lifted on two left-side wheels. I was working that corner and had to run for it. Somehow he lucked out and just landed heavily on all four, whew. After that, I volunteered for entrance monitor instead.

@stockysnail, you're already fit so this might not apply, but a helpful exercise I do in-season helps with auto-x and track day reflexes. It won't work in a car with electrically assisted power steering that turns on in accessory position so find something else. Don't start the engine, you'll want any assist off. I use a 4,400 lb. SUV with 33" off-road tires. Crank your favorite music and start sawing the wheel with a 9-3 position and go to both L-R extremes, warming up slowly for a few minutes and then shoot for two complete wheel rotations per second. Start with 10 minutes every other day, progressing to 20 minutes when you can. You'll feel it in your shoulders, but it will make quick reactions on-course easier.

I can't recall seeing a noise monitor out there for any club events, only some commercial races.

Still, my limit is 96, as in 96°. It's always 8°+ hotter at PIR from the tarmac effect so stay cool out there everyone. Noble of them to provide corner workers for the event so you slackers can focus on fun. Wish I didn't have a prior commitment or I'd be there.

Sure thing, you can borrow my nerdy open face helmet. We'll have to meet up at some point beforehand as I'm not likely to be there saturday.
