>>Gauge cluster overlay DIY<<

Hello everyone!! This is my first DIY so here it goes. DO AT YOUR OWN RISK. This is the goal

Edit: I ordered my parts from @Max @ 86WORX
I cant figure out how to post a link from my phone :( but its easy enough to find on his site. They are under interior parts.

Step 1) Remove the gauge cluster from the car. There is another DIY on here on how to do that, It is really easy and if you can't do that you should not be attempting this.

Step 2) remove all the plastic bits, I chose to paint my silver ring black so I removed that too for painting.

Attachment 114644

Step 3) Remove all the needles. Note the position of each one very carefully as you have to be very meticulous putting them back EXACTLY where they were. Be very careful here, you have to lift straight up. You will end up with this.

Attachment 114645

Step 4) Lift the faceplate off and lay down the new one.

Attachment 114646

Step 5) Push the needles back on, Be very careful to not push them on fully at first. Once it is on a little turn them until you hit the stopper and use that as a reference point to reset them. I.e. spin the temperature needle to the left until it hits the stopper, that is where it will be when the car is off so the needle should point backwards slightly. You can just use a small amount of force to get the needle to rotate while the motor is held to the stopper to help you line it up. You will get this. I also chose to get needle caps too so this is me applying those.

Step 6) Optional: Paint the Silver ring (note the japanese news paper that came as packaging for my overlay/needle caps #JDM lol!)

Attachment 114649

Step 7) Reassemble!! Note I mixed up the tach and speedo meters so this pic is not right!!

Attachment 114643

Now Just go test it!! :party0030: Here is 1 lights on shoot in the day and a poorly shot picture of lights off during the day.

I am pressed for time so that is all for now! I may or maynot update this depending on the demand. P.S sorry if I cant spell

Lunatic 07-09-2015 11:09 PM

Where did you get the new face plate?

Calum 07-09-2015 11:19 PM

X2

The stock overlay is god awful ugly. Normally I don't care about aesthetics but the stock overlay is bad enough to get me to spend money on it. I had no idea a product like this was out there.

go_a_way1 07-09-2015 11:35 PM

Hahaha thats why i posted this :) most people dont know about half the stuff you can get for these cars. Im not sure on fourm rules about posting links to venders ect. Im new at the whole thing. Send me a PM i can send you the link. There are a few choices but they aint cheap and are made to order and shipped right from Japan.

Calum 07-10-2015 07:10 AM

My search found this, but the links aren't as helpful as I'd hoped.

go_a_way1 07-10-2015 09:03 AM

Ya that is a true overlay, I did a full replacement. Those a easier to install because you dont have to remove the needles. What are you looking for in those links??

All PM's replied!! Any questions dont be shy to ask I am here to help!

As long as you're not making money off any potential sales, yes you are allowed to post links.

go_a_way1 07-10-2015 10:56 AM

Okay I will add the link to my main post when i get a chance

go_a_way1 07-10-2015 06:59 PM

Just a quick update:

I am really happy with this product so far but the only thing I have noticed is that the MIL lamps are not nearly as bright as they were when it was OEM. It is not a big deal as you can still see them easily but they are less likely to catch you eye when your driving. The up side to this is that if you drive around with your trac off all the time the light wont bother you much anymore.

Lol the quality is amazing, but yea it costs too much for most. I do wish the MIL's were easier to see during the day TBH. In the sun I can't tell if my VSC is on or off haha!

Impureclient 07-29-2015 09:27 PM

For $250 they could have left the unecessary advertising off of it.

Yea I thought that too but to be honest I never notice it in the car.

thats a super easy fix, just rip it apart again and swap out all the LEDs for new ones.
i did it in mine (swapped to blue) atleast 10x brighter. all depends on the LEDs you go with.

Good point!! I might do that one day.

go_a_way1 08-19-2015 04:00 PM

Anyone else do this yet or am I the only one?

ort895 03-18-2016 12:33 AM

So I pulled my cluster out to change my led's (looks great).
But now (I fucked up) my tachometer "doesn't work".
Somebody help lol
Like I did a redline run and the tach stayed at 0 rpm for a while and then maxed out at 4

Holy shit people read my old ass thread!! lmao!!!

Alright first make you didnt mix up the Tach needle with the speedo needle otherwise it will get hit the black circle and not move.

Second try taking the needle off again and spinning the motor all the way to the left to simulate the car being off and attach the needle pointing where is should be (cant remember if its at 0 or a little under 0)

Quote me next time so I get an alert you normally get a faster response. Please report back I want to make sure you get it fixed haha!

Thanks I had trouble getting my needles recalibrated until I read this

Sev995 04-06-2020 04:37 PM

weird calibration

Was switching them out, put each needle back in carefully and to the correct positions so that when my car is running everything is accurate. But whenever I turn my car off for a few hours and come back, the needles drop back down to where my gas is at empty (when it should be at half) and my rpms dropping 1000k. Any thoughts on how I should get these to stay calibrated?

StraightOuttaCanadaEh 07-15-2021 09:37 PM

Well I messed up and now my fuel gauge needle isn't pointing to where it's supposed to be. Unlike the other needles, which have a "stop", this one just spins freely so should I maybe fill the tank and then manually set the position to "full"?
