NEW: OpenFlash Tablet G-Meter and Performance Driving Pack

Hi guys,
We have a big update we will be releasing to all OFT users later this month. It is something that we have been working on for a little while now. Something squarely aimed at those who are focused on performance driving/racing/drifting. It's something that I (personally) have always wanted. And like all other OFT updates, it will be FREE :)

With the next update, you will be able to monitor/data log everything you need to quantify driving dynamics. This includes:

- Lateral G
- Acceleration G
- Deceleration G
- Yaw (drifting!)
- Brake pressure
- Steering wheel angle
- Individual tire air temperatures
- Individual wheel speeds
- Individual wheel spin

Now there is no need to spend anther $500-1000 on an add-on race data acquisition system. And even better is that all these new channels can be monitored/log along with the usual engine related data (boost, AFR, timing, knock, etc,.) This makes for a VERY powerful tool for those who want to quantify their driving. With these new features you will be able to compare lap times and be able to definitively determine where the difference is as well as how to improve your performance. Monitoring tire temps will also give you insight into things like alignment, tire size, pressures, etc. One thing we can't quite log (yet) is tire pressure. But we are working on it :)

Cheers,
shiv

The magic of CANBUS keeps giving and giving!

Shinobu's Smile 07-06-2015 02:57 PM

Wait, does this mean the tablets or cars have an accelerometer in them already?

The cars have all these sensors built into them. They are all used by the stability control and ABS systems. It was just a matter of getting the OFT to communicate with these other modules, access the data and display them in a useable format and with a good sampling rate.

Damn, I never seem to be surprised at how much tech goes into them.

The only thing missing is GPS tied to the rest of the data, then you wouldn't have to match up separately logged GPS data to see everything all together.

If there was a way to add in an external GPS antenna, and tire pressures you've got a huge winner!

Sweet48 07-06-2015 06:21 PM

My friend asked me the other day "Does this thing log G forces and yaw?" like 2 days ago. I said "No..." Then I see this.........day made!

D_Thissen 07-06-2015 06:30 PM

Its amazing to see what this little tablet can do! Keep up the good work!

Thorpedo 07-06-2015 11:32 PM

Man oh man, I wasn't expecting this with all the other development you are doing on different platforms. Please Shiv, do your best to have this out in the time frame you mentioned. I only have so munch summer up here in snowville.

THANK YOU.

Are we able to log more than 12 params now? Or is the 12 param limit still present?

That would suck, as I want to log what I'm logging now, combined with the new body parameters.

I would GLADLY trade logging time for more parameters.

Reading shiv,s post it appears you will be able to do both at same time
the current parameters all come from ecu vie direct reeading of ecu ram addresses.

the new driving parameters are derived from the stability control and abs modules likely via reading data off can buss ie a differnt mode of request so its likely it can be done concurrently.

Shiv is there any progress for being able to check/clear chassis error codes (i.e. speed sensor warnings?)

Tromatic 07-08-2015 11:22 AM

Way cool.

Teseo 07-08-2015 11:50 AM

This will be an excellent tool for compare suspensions components like coilovers etc

Tectoniic 07-08-2015 12:27 PM

and the ROI on the OFT keeps getting better!!

Rybot 07-08-2015 02:03 PM

This is gonna be fun to see!

I assume we can just add the data stream to the current UI we have for monitoring?

You will be able to log up to 14 channels simutaneously. And you can view any combination of channels (old and new). The 14 channel limit is somewhat arbitrary and is based upon hoe many channels we can clearly display on the screen at the same time.

I can look into like this. When do you feel speed sensor codes? I only see them on the Dyno and they clear as soon as you drive on the street.

Contrary to popular believes, developing new features on other platforms doesn't limit development on this platform. In fact all these new features will be ported into the other supported vehicles. In this particular case, we decided to use the gt86 as the test bed. We could have just as easily used the Porsche, Mx5, Fiat, etc but i like my little turbo FRS so much that testing things like this is a blast :)

The Android Torque app will clear all CEL codes from BCM and auto trans like the dreaded P0700 so you should be able to sniff the obd command sent by Torque or other OBD scanner and copy to OFT

It also reads those codes so could probabbly mod oft to read all cel codes to

Sounds like a plan

I just wish the tablet was way bigger and wireless!

jupillam 07-09-2015 01:26 AM

can we adjust steering angle?

burdickjp 07-09-2015 11:13 AM

What logging rate are you getting with this data?

Turn the steering wheel?

Can the logged data be reviewed on the tablet?

No, but it takes literally 30 seconds to get it on a laptop. I can have a graph up in under two minutes between autocross runs.

Silver Ignition 07-10-2015 08:43 AM

By far the best mod I've purchased for my car. Nothing else keeps on giving after purchase quite like an OFT.

Same as the other engine channels ~10 samples/sec

That's a little disappointing compared to the logging rate of the Tactrix.

Increasing the logging rate is easy. But it's a trade off between logging rate and datalog file size. People tend to get caught up with logging rates when there is little or no benifit of logging engine channels once you go beyond a certain rate. It's not like we are datalogging formula one cars here. But to be fair, once you start logging things like G sensors, faster rates may be useful. And if that turns out to be the case, we will adjust the logging rate accordingly.

Right now the Tactrix can't log the VSC module, so it really is better than nothing.

Very cool. I'm looking forward to it.

@Shiv@Openflash,

Once the MY16's come out with the new VDC settings, will OFT have the ability to reflash older MY's to the newer, less intrusive,VDC settings?

bee_are_zee 07-10-2015 11:22 AM

@Shiv@Openflash

Just a thought; how difficult would it be to make logging rate user selectable for times when you are logging engine parameters for tuning vs logging an autocross run?
