2015 SCCA Solo Nationals Thread

Didn't see one posted so I figured we should get one going.

Chime in if you're going, what you're driving, and what class. Share any additional thoughts on places to stay, restaurants to eat at, things to do, etc. Gossip about competitors, setups, or anything else fun that is related to nationals.

I'll be attending Nationals this year. I still need to work out the logistics and register for the class, but I will be going. It will be my first trip out to the big event and I'm looking forward to it.

I will be co-driving my brother's RX8 in C Street. Not because I lost faith in the Twins, but co-driving his car is a lot easier logistically than taking my own car out there.

Who else is going?

vroom4 07-01-2015 03:00 PM

Driving a chariot in STS. Staying at chase suite hotel.

In for CS, #12. The Staybridge with the SCCA event rates is where I'm going to be at, good rates all things considered.

BTW... I have some revalved Bilstein shocks (B6) that are very aggressive (probably not great for daily driving) available that I can bring to the event if anyone is interested in buying them, or even just running them for nationals, whatever. With the TRD springs, they are just too much because Bilstein revalved them to simulate a stiffer spring and all, so I'm taking them off my FR-S and running something else. Maybe someone in a BRZ that doesn't have the TRD option? Anyways, if anyone is interested, I'm open to selling them and could bring them to the event. They were $750 new and $400+ for the revalving, but I am open to offers.

In for CS as well, #81.
Staying with a group of other Cali guys at a house we rented with garage space :)

markw 07-01-2015 10:55 PM

Still debating it. Supposedly there's a car hauler going out. I'll probably split time between the nats and visiting family as I'm from that area. Want to get the car out there without putting the miles on it. :)

Sammakko 07-01-2015 11:24 PM

I'll be there, Co-Driving a CS FR-s. Staying at the Fairfield Inn

solort 07-01-2015 11:34 PM

I plan on making it. Will be either in CS or GS depending on prep funds for the FRS. Also at Fairfield Inn. I look forward to putting some smiling faces to screen names.

Is Jason your brother? If so, I've got a lot of seat time in that car - I co-drove it for 4 years with the PO.

Sammako's codriving my car. 192 CS. Konis, TRDs, and BFGs.

Shipping it back and forth saves you some time on the road too :). Just fly in and drive. I'm planning on doing the same thing except with a co-drive which will already on site.

Yes, Jason is my brother and it is Chris' old car. I also regularly race with Teddie who also co-drove it at Nationals last year. What a small world. The engine got replaced right before Jason took possession of it, so it should be a little peppier than it was years earlier. Jason has certainly has done well during some of the big events on the East Coast and hopefully that translates to the big event. I will definitely need some practice with it though.

I think a TRD FRS will be very competitive in the class. We've seen Dave Ogburn really showcase what the platform can do. He will be tough to catch at Nationals.

I drove it after the new motor was put in, and it's like it's a different car entirely. We never realized how down on power it was because it was a gradual thing, and the car was still competitive. The car has been very well loved while Chris owned it, and it's an amazingly easy car to drive fast. I would have bought it myself if not for the extra care and feeding of the rotary over the FA20. I drive 30k miles a year, and the difference in mileage and expected lifetime of the motor becomes a real number at that pace.

Chris did trophy in that car a couple of years ago, on R6s. He ordered A6s and Tire Rack shipped Rs...he didn't realize it until after the event when he was taking the tires off.

You guys are certainly in the hunt. I'm there for a good time, if I can take the last trophy I'll be thrilled.

And CS is the largest class at nationals by a pretty big margin right now. That's exciting stuff. 41 entries so far.

DylanFRS 07-02-2015 03:35 PM

I'll be there. #45 CS. It is only 4 hours from Wichita, it is a crime to not go.

AustinTX 07-02-2015 04:01 PM

Definitely will be there - most likely in an STU STI, but other options are still being weighed. Gotta see how things go against those pesky Corvettes.

Good to know, thanks for the info. It seemed like a solid car when he got it and he is doing really well with it, so I hope that you're right that it has the chops to get it done. I got the chance to drive the car once when he first got it, but he didn't have the time to get it completely prepped for the autocross. So he couldn't adjust the rear shocks or mess with the front sway bar. Overall it felt pretty good, though I'd want a sharper front end. Little too floppy compared to our 86s but maybe it is better now. His car felt a lot stronger than my old RX8 ever did, but I chalked it up to the shorter gearing on the 17s.

The car might be in the hunt, but I don't know if I am, haha. I'll be happy with a trophy, I'll race you for that last one :)

I've driven 4 hours to go to 'locals' before. Not going to Nationals would be a crime. Cya there.

Good luck! I'd say watch out for 350Zs too if Heikotter makes it out there. He has been really fast in that thing around here, but I think he has a conflict using a real race car :). Jonathan Lugod is gonna be a fun one to watch too, he has been doing really well with his FRC C5.

Not sure how they will handle that. Should have had 99 blocked off. It's only a numbers game:)

trippinbillies40 07-06-2015 02:08 PM

I'll be there! #40/140 STX FR-S. Staying at Garden Inn Haymarket. Once paddock registration opens and I get a spot I'll let you guys know where I'll be in case you want to come say hi.

G_Ride 07-07-2015 01:17 AM

I'll be there in CS. My brother will be co-driving my car too.

Your brother has been driving my car and he has been pretty good. He would have been 2nd in CS if he was in the class. 3rd if you count Eileen in CS Open instead of CS Ladies.

I need to stay in front of him.

trippinbillies40 07-08-2015 10:02 AM

Check that on my paddock spacing... I'll be with the Colorado guys I think. Maybe Northwest Ohio guys. You'll find me either of those places lol.

So does this mean I should stop letting him get some practice in my car? :)

Not quite the same setup as yours as my RE71Rs are practically dead and I'm using up my RS3s in the meantime.

Just turn the 9 upside down ;)

And that was the punch line with the smiley.....:thanks:

Reminds me of the Cheers episode with Woody calling out the wrong number for a lottery because he read it upside down. At the end, they drew for a second place price and he drew an 11 (I believe). Then he looked at it and said "Here we go again...."

Such a good show...

You just did that cause I'm from the South:laughabove:

I would say yes, but he is your region's benevolent dictator. Who knows what he'll do to you.

Hey,
Does anyone have an open seat for a co-driver? I'm coming up from Hawaii Region with a small group of us and it's just too expensive to justify shipping a car. It's my first time going to Solo Nat's but I have 6yrs exp (SMF, SM, ESP). I've run some locals and test and tunes in various BRZs in CS to get ready for Nat's hoping to find co-drive in the massive CS field.
Does anyone have an open seat?

Thanks,
Daniel

In case you guys are worried that a brand new user popped up out of nowhere asking for a ride, I've talked with Daniel and he's a really cool guy. If my seat wasn't already taken I'd let him drive. Let's find him a seat in a twin and make CS even more epic.

kombi 07-15-2015 11:18 PM

Yup I'm from Oahu though the other islands have autocross. We run at the stadium over here for Solo and have some rallycross action too.
I'm registered as CS #7 for now.
And fully understand the expense(tires, travel, maint., share) and compensation to get a co-drive.
Let me know if you hear of any CS or STX ppl in need of a tire warmer or someone to help reduce expense.

Thanks and Aloha.

Update. I found a seat in the meantime in STU. Thanks for the help and good luck to eveyone.

markw 07-18-2015 01:55 PM

Ok, in caving to incredible local pressure, my wife telling me to just do it because I want to visit family, and finally Manfred pinging me on facebook, I've caved. Looking forward to a road trip and seeing how I do. Kombi you have a seat now, hope you can handle the lowered stance of the FRS on TRD springs. :)

edj 07-18-2015 06:50 PM

finally got around to registering for Nationals.
looking forward to getting my butt kicked in CS? :iono:

markw 07-18-2015 10:43 PM

Judging by the entry list, CS is turning into spec 86 class.

Jawnathin 07-20-2015 02:28 PM

Registered last week, #62 in an RX8. Over 50 registered in CS when I last checked. Should be a lot of fun!

Also for anyone still on the fence, registration fees increase from $170 to $300 after August 4th. Better get in now!

Your brother is getting quite fast and is getting used to the car fairly quickly. At yesterday's event he almost got Ric and I :)

I heard. He bragged about it last night. You have to stop him. His ego is big enough already.

Jawnathin 08-03-2015 07:57 PM

Just saw we hit 1160 registered attendees as of earlier today. That beats last year's record of 1158. Wonder if it'll hit 1200? An interesting name registration earlier today. Not in the spot light since he retired, but Al Unser Jr. registered for CAM-T. Winning the Indy 500 is nothing compared to winning Solo Nationals :)

Anyway, 66 are in CS, I believe the largest individual class. Would be pretty damn cool if we go over 70.
