Simple One: Clear Turn Signals

This is the first mod I've done to my BRZ and it's a pretty simple one. I bought some chrome bulbs on ebay to replace the amber ones that are in the headlights and tail lights. Total cost was $30 for 4 of them. These are chrome when off, so you don't see the amber reflections in the reflectors, but still light up amber. Installing them is pretty straightforward, the bulbs are in grey sockets that you have to twist and then pull out, and then the bulbs simply slide out and in. In the trunk there is one plastic clip you have to remove to pull the liner back and access the socket. The bulb type is 7440, or WY21W, they are interchangeable. Here's some pretty terrible pictures I took, but you get the idea:

Looks sharp! It's kind of a waste of a brand-new bulb though, but I would sacrifice them for this, and keep them in case one of the chrome bulbs burn out.

GodSays 06-18-2012 08:22 PM

Hellls yeah
does he have more for sale so I can buy them now. Pm me the link to the post on eBay please

Spaceywilly 06-18-2012 09:14 PM

Finally a good looking mod. Going on my to do list.

DaJo 06-18-2012 10:30 PM

Looking good on the SWP, very clean looking! I think I will be doing this as well! Great post OP!

Do Boy 06-19-2012 01:09 AM

Life's too short to wait any more! First, it was the car, now the bulb? Just change it!
If the clear one's burn out, replace it back with the stock. lol

Thanks... but is it possible to make a write up?

It may be simple mod, but think of it as to help newb ppl out ;)

These will work, just tell the seller you want 7440. If you search for 7440 chrome bulbs there are lots of options, just make sure they light up amber.

Brzer 06-21-2012 01:49 AM

I like Philips Silver Vision bulbs. You can get them from Autolamps-online
http://www.autolamps-online.com/cate...&sort=priceasc
I got two backup pairs as they no longer are being made in the WY21W size.

GodSays 06-22-2012 12:19 AM

bought 2 pairs, if your in soCal and you want the bulbs let me know

milenko11 06-23-2012 11:33 AM

Front and rear are the same bulb?

It is for BRZ, not sure about frs

NRGBalanced 06-24-2012 03:29 AM

I have two pair to sell from that original eBay link. One bulb is a little scuffed from being inserted as a test. I wasn't impressed with the light intensity reduction it caused, but then again I don't smoke my lenses either. Decided not to keep them - wanted stock brightness. PM me if interested.

Zgrinch 06-24-2012 09:37 AM

Thanks for the tip Spacewilly, installed the bulbs all the way around this morning and they look good. Pretty easy to install, just follow the user manual.

Replaced mine in my Ultramarine FR-S today. They are the same bulbs for front and rear: 7440. Looks 10000% better.:happyanim:Gonna get the JDM clear side markers next.

Could someone (or several people) with these lights post what country they were made in? All the ones on fleabay appear to be chinese/Taiwanese bulbs.

Do they make bulbs anywhere else? If you want a little higher quality you could go to stealth bulbs but not worth the extra money imo

Do you have any experience with them? These were the only ones I found to be made in the USA as well. They're twice the price but now we gotta wonder, will they last twice as long?

I absolutely don't want to come off as being on my high horse or anything but over the past couple years I've been trying to stay away from what is pretty much sweat shop labor in an effort to find better quality that may end up being cheaper in the long run. You gotta figure there must be a good reason for a large company to NOT outsource production to China. This is all horribly off topic. Please feel free to PM me if you'd like to share your thoughts on the stealthbulbs or your own, wherever they may be from.

Very awesome mod idea, I had never heard of these types of bulbs till this thread.

Spaceywilly 06-27-2012 10:45 PM

I bought stealth bulbs for my WRX four years ago but unfortunately never installed them. The WRX has an orange plastic bubble around the bulb that you have to remove and I just never got around to it. They do look great in the box though :) They are definitely a higher quality as far as the finish goes but I just don't think it's worth paying double for.

You might want to check the front ones out because the front is a 7444 bulb and by using a 7440 you no longer will have your parking lights up front

well.... crap.

Thanks for the heads up. This explains why Frances would start yelling at me when I turn off the headlights while going in to the gate on base at night. Ordered some 7443 bulbs (interchangeable with 7444) just now.

tonystewart 06-28-2012 10:37 AM

Ordered, arrived, installed and thank you

Yea he is right, 7440's don't work right in the FRS.

Do they work right in a BRZ? Can anyone confirm?

This thread is for the BRZ, so to answer your question; Yes it does indeed work on the BRZ, because it is only a blinker, we have LED "Angel eye" parking lights.

I just got mine, and I noticed a huge reduction of light intensity compared to the stock bulb... Don't know if I should keep them on or not...They look great while off, but a little dim for my liking when lit up. :iono:

If you don't mind people seeing these LED bulbs sticking out in the housing...The point was to find bulbs that would "camouflage" with the chrome housing itself. =/

Mo707 07-26-2012 03:03 AM

is 7440 the size for the front and back bulbs?
On another thread they said the front ones were a different size?

*edit* Never mind.. ^^ haha
