Most important quote of the whole article:

"It’s very important to make clear here that this is merely a rumor, and one about a car surrounded by more rumors than John Travolta’s sexuality. How many turbocharged, supercharged, convertible and sedan variants of the Toyobaru have the “inside sources” promised us by now? Take this with a gallon of salt"

Yeah that one mad me chuckle.

But in regards to the debate goign on over there, when the refresh does come i would much rather see the "may the best car win" rather then a sports car three way where no one knows who the father is. :bonk::drool:

Oh don't forget the whole "BMW is going to be involved" rumors. Beyond a three way and starting to sound like an episode of Maury.

Is it possible for a magazine to have less-than-zero credibility?

The new Yaris is going to be built on the Mazda 2 platform in Mexico, so the two companies already have a working relationship.

Car and Driver is learning the ways of the clickbait from Motoring.au

Shame, I liked their opinions on cars, like a less flamboyant Top Gear.

Is there any other car at the moment that inspires as much rumour and hogwash journalism?

The 86/BRZ is a an NA RWD 2 door sportscar. Deal with it media.

Until there's a statement and press conference unveiling the 4 door AWD, twin charged, hybrid, bio diesel, auto driving, convertible with 8hp more model, then don't believe anything.

Oh are they finally releasing that one? Does it come in orange?

FRiSson 06-29-2015 11:06 PM

Good news. Mazda is a terrific car company.

Honda with the NSX and persistent S___/Type R rumors
Mazda with on again off again wankel rumors
Nissan with a rework of the Z to be more like the 240z/sx

Mustang was king for '13-'14 rumors as far as I'm concerned
'15 seems to be all about the new Civic from what I've seen

In order to defeat the Miata, the Toyobaru will become the Miata.

If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of every Toyobaru owner that's over 5'9" saying "I'll never buy one"

They should just buy a Charger, I hear they're nice.

If Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru made a Miata I think it'd be an amazing thing. I'd probably trade my FR-S in for it.

MightyMeeple 06-30-2015 11:59 AM

The most ridiculous part of the article is the insinuation that Toyota/Subaru would want to use the Mazda platform. Would anyone really argue that the stock Miata platform/suspension is better than the stock 86?

The platform isn't the weak point of the twins....

Not a big enough parts nightmare with just two companies involved?

Toyoda-san's comment in Automotive News shows a more realistic approach after his ill-fated Tesla dalliance.

“This is an engagement announcement, not a marriage announcement,” Toyoda said.

Ok, now I'm excited

Quote:

“In a sense, Mazda is ahead of us in many areas,” he said. Mazda’s high-compression Skyactiv engines, efficient transmission and lightweight chassis systems, as well as its Kodo design language, are prime examples of areas where Mazda leads Toyota by a “full lap,” Toyoda said.
