Anyone know of a good place to get windows tinted?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knows of any good/reputable places for a tint, and some advice about what percentage tint I should get because I know tinting the front windows is illegal here but it looks better when all of them are at least close to looking like the same shade of black. How much would a normal tint cost? I've called a couple of places and prices vary significantly.

Second question: Should I vinyl wrap my roof? if so how much does it typically cost to get something like that done in a gloss black finish?

thanks

go for like 25% tint all around. I currently have 18% tint all around and it looks pretty dark from the outside, you might get some cop troubles from it if you live in a larger city. I have pictures of it in my build thread if you want to see how dark it looks

Yea I like the dark look but not too dark I want people to be able to see at least a silhouette of me sorta haha and what benefit does that tint have that you currently have on your 86, was it more pricey?

the tint I got just blocks out more UV than the normal tint it was about $30 more expensive than the normal tint, so I went with it. I live in a desert basically where it gets over 120F in the summer. need as much tint as I can get. today was 113F, it get ridiculous over here.

You know the windows already block 100%uv. It's something vehicles in the US have been doing for several years now

If you want a dark tint, yes it's illegal. But you can tint the front windows if you are not going for a dark look. You should look up what is allowed so you know what to expect, and not just get a BS "front window tint is illegal" ticket without knowing what is actually allowed.

3M Crystalline 70 all around on my car:

I loved it so much, I've subsequently spent $1500 on two more cars with the same tint.

I found some scruffy, rough clear coating on the top of my car. Probably from the sun?? But i dont park my car outside often long enough. Time for a roof wrap i guess. :iono:

yea I know a dark tint is illegal but it looks nice :D and my Friend and I got pulled over and ticketed even though he has a 35% tint and his interior is white so I was pretty shocked and asked the officer isn't it ok to have this percentage for a tint and he said any tint that isn't transparent is illegal such as colored tints(black, blue, red, mirror) so we went to court to try and contest it but we got the same answer :/

I got mine done at Tint Master City in Canoga Park. Great service and turnaround time (I waited in their office while they worked on my car).

http://www.yelp.com/biz/tint-master-city-canoga-park

I only did the front as the rear on my car came tinted (25%) from the dealer. I want to say that I paid like $125 for the 30% front. I have had this set up on all my cars and have not had an issue with police. Ever.

As far as wrapping the roof its your car so if you want to do it go for it.

Cool, Did it come with a lifetime warranty? and is the 25% too dark??

MJones_RB 06-30-2015 02:00 PM

ES Sports in Gardena does 3M Crystalline tint install. i was quoted about $800 for the rear window & side windows. I am more concerned about blocking heat out since our windows have some amount of UV blockage. Black interior tends so soak up radiant heat and makes for a toasty seat. I like how the Crystalline can block out heat even without a dark tinting. Seems pricey to me but with a lifetime guarantee I guess it's worth it.

Milotic 06-30-2015 02:10 PM

[Just as a % reference since I got it done in San Diego]
I did 55% since I didn't want to go past 50%. (Their next level was 33%) For the 7 Windows they charged me $200 cash and did a decent job. Came with a lifetime warranty and a $40 re-tint if I have to strip it. ;)

I was thinking of doing 25% all around, but now I'm confused with some people's responses because 5% is limo tint here and I would think 55% is very light, so either I'm right or I'm missing something :(

taguilar18 06-30-2015 03:17 PM

I got my tint done at Kool Vision Window Tinting in Winnetka. From what I remember, I paid around $170 or so for all 7 windows with a lifetime warranty. Great service there! Definitely don't do anything darker than 35% up front. I have 35% in the front and 15% in the back. I personally really like that combination as I think it blends perfectly. The front is dark enough to block out some sunlight, but you can pretty much still see inside the car from outside (even at night). I was lucky enough to have 15% up front and 5% in the back in my last car without getting stopped, but it's definitely something I don't recommend since it drastically reduces your visibility at night.

As far as the roof wrap goes, I think you should do it. I got quoted $200 but I didn't go through with it since I thought it'd look odd on my Hot Lava. Firestorm and Whiteout/Halo look good with a gloss black roof though!

This is false, as I used to be a CHP officer. ANY tint is illegal on the front windows.

So a clear tint on the front windows that is only for UV protection is illegal too?

I want to say that it did but I honestly cant remember at this point since its been like 3 years. No I find that to actually be the best for tint and visibility as its not too dark but not to light. They have plexiglass mounted samples at the shop if you want to see the other options.

Packofcrows 07-02-2015 04:22 AM

Do like 35% for driver, 30% for passenger, small rear windows 20%, rear 30% and front windshield do just top of window like 5? inches 30%.

Rough numbers so don't take them serious. Just an example of what I'm gonna do..

Got numbers based on this.

My FR-S has tinting that is bubbling. Dealer put on cr@p tint.

What I mean for front windshield is something like this.

Yes, tinting full window for other than medical reasons is illegal.

But........

The California tint law also prohibits front windshield tinting, but allows visor tint strips. There are very detailed specifications for visor strips, but it’s doubtful that any CHP or Police would know the details and have a tape measure on hand to check your compliance...

V kool Tint

Hi I just moved here from the Philippines and i used to have Heavy tints all around my vehicle, now that i got my 86, ive been planning to install some V kool tints on it to try and beat the heat. does anyone know a decent place around the OC Area and how much would a v kool setup cost all around.
My car is asphalt grey, and the no tint in the front CA law just bugs the heck out of me, it would look off if the rear is tinted while the front and driver side are not, thats why i decided to go the v kool route/ similar Tint.
thanks in advance

I had mine done in tint-X in Rosemead, i think it was $140 or 160 including front two windows. The back window are tinted with second darkest and front the tinted second lightest shade. I had been using this combination for past 15 years and never had trouble with it. The purpose is to make contrast and still effectively blocking the sunlight and have privacy. However, when i see a cop i always roll down the driver side window.

that VW is so clean haha.

TS, not sure how far you are from Inglewood, but theres a place called redline tints and wrap (we have several members that have gone there)...The owner has a 14' FRS himself, and knows pretty much whats up. Its added assurance as well. because when we open our doors, the windows drops down ever so slightly...I've seen a tint on a FRS where the bottom portion of the window isn't tinted, looks ugly

My 20% tints for side/rear were $120 flat.

mrunal91 10-18-2015 10:27 PM

To err on the side of caution, you should probably not go darker than 35% in the front. You can go as dark at 5% in the back, however, its really hard to see while reversing so be mindful of that.

Ive been running 15% all around for almost 20 months now and have not had an issue; ive been pulled over for changing lanes in an intersection and did not get a ticket for my tints. i think it just depends on the mood of the officer if and when you get pulled over. My dad got pulled over solely for his tints (35% in the front).

Anyway, i went to Steves tint shop in Upland and had full ceramic Formula 1 Pinnacles (15% all around) installed for $320. his install is pretty clean and i have no complaints.

I'm moving to LA in a few months, should I preemptively remove the 35% tint I have in the front and replace it with something much lighter?

50 percent seems way too light imo. Like nothing is there, 35 should be fine. I've had 15's and 20's on my car for the longest, cops don't seem to mind (but others may differ.)

Nah, just leave it on. If you get a ticket, then remove it and then get it signed off and then put on something like 45-50% fronts.

Why fix it when it's not broken? A fix it ticket is only 25 dollars.

even though you don't have to remove your tint, you should probably get into the habit of lowering your window at least halfway when you see a cop. I usually lower my window all the way down (love auto windows) whenever I see a cop, even if I have my AC on. but I also have 18% tint, lol

Thanks everyone for the input! I think rolling down the window when seeing a cop is probably my best bet until it becomes an issue.
