The Last-Minute-Drive Thread

Maybe this'll be the first of a series of LMD threads, but we've had two last-minute attempts to gather folks for drives. Nobody gets instantaneous notifications of new threads in the regional forums, so instead of creating a new thread (or maybe in addition to), post to this one. Anyone subscribed with instant email notification enabled will get a ping. Then maybe we won't have to motor alone. :D

WRXGuy1 06-18-2012 01:04 PM

I think it's a good idea. Some of us have already created a facebook group as well, so if someone wants to meet up they can post there and those of us with smartphones get notified immediately.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/334152389995223/

I didn't mean to steal your thread :P

It's amazing how many people hate FB :)
Unfortunately it's the most popular of the social media sites so we kinda gotta go with that until G+ takes off (probably not happening)

blalor 06-19-2012 09:43 AM

I don't think we have to at all. I don't use Facebook. I deleted my G+ account. My choice, and I have nothing against people who do use them. What I find strange is to come into a forum (arguably a "social media" outlet in its own right) where people are actively engaging in conversations on a specific topic (our little Toyobarus, for example) and then say "hey, guys, let's go talk about this same stuff somewhere else!". If you wanna do FB, have at it, but please don't try to redirect a focused conversation to a different outlet.

Anyway, this is seriously OT for this thread. Subscribe to this thread (instant email notification is the only reasonable method) if you want to be notified when someone's about to head out for a drive, and if you're about to head out for a drive, post meet-up details (or a link to another thread) here!
:burnrubber:

I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything like that. In my own humble opinion I prefer G+. And besides I noticed FB doesn't really work that well on Google Chrome.

Does anyone want to go for a drive in central/western MA this afternoon or evening?

An on-topic post! Finally! :D

I'm up in NH for a big MINI rally. Ended up taking the BRZ because my MINI's clutch is acting up. I'll be knocking around the Kanc in a little bit!

mpicher 06-23-2012 10:18 AM

Love the Kanc! Had an easy ride up it but had a 'spirited' drive down it one night from Lincoln after the Northeast Rumble. That was my first time on the Kanc and I had my Cooper S. Can't wait to try it in the FR-S.

Deslock 06-23-2012 12:15 PM

What: Meet, Eat, Drive
When: Sat 6/23 6:00 PM
Where: Norm Wagner Toyota, 700 Old Union Turnpike, Lancaster, MA
Who: Anyone who has or appreciates the FT86 (BRZ/FRS)

I'm replying to blalor here rather than create a new post so that people who have subscribed to this thread don't get pinged about things that aren't drives.

On that note, I suggest that we create/link-to separate threads from here when posting about last minute drives (and resist posting about anything else in this thread).

Was fun. Good food and was nice to meet a few other members. My car was covered with bugs... took me a while to clean them all off :D Unfortunately, we ran out of light during the drive before we got to the interesting roads.

The Kanc is great, and Bear Notch Road is even better. I didn't get a ton of time to explore this weekend, but there are a few new roads I've heard about that I want to drive soon.

I took some video on Saturday morning (plus some of our drive up and down Mt Washington in some pretty horrendous weather). If they're not too incriminating, I'll post 'em online. :)

Sony 06-28-2012 02:46 AM

I have the day off Today, going to head to Kaizen Tuning in Acton, MA around noonish to 1pm to check out some rims and tuning stuff. Anyone is welcome to join me or meet me there.

Deslock 06-28-2012 09:17 AM

Not really last minute, but I'm posting it here since it's only a little over week away:

Epic drive though western MA & southern VT - 7/8 Sunday

White Mountain/Kancamagus Run

X-post from main thread:

Saturday, June 30 1 PM

Meet at:
L.L. Bean‎
1390 White Mountain Highway
Conway, New Hampshire 03860

We will meet there at 1 PM. I'm going to come up 128/95 to Rt 16 (with a detour in Danvers to pick up some radios)
We plan to cross from Conway to Lincoln (and maybe back?). We could get something to eat at either end depending on hunger.

So far, it looks like we have:

NRGBalanced coming from Waltham, MA
mpicher coming from Augusta, ME (http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...649#post286649)
WRXGuy1 coming from Goffstown, NH (http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...9&postcount=23)

Any other takers?

blalor 06-30-2012 07:33 AM

This sounds like a blast, but I was up there last weekend and can't make it today. Are you familiar with Hurricane Mtn Road? I haven't done this drive myself, but the folks who did do it last weekend raved about it. http://minisontop.com/driving-routes...mountain-road/ There's plenty of good stuff on the West side of 93, too. 112 and 116 are good, as I recall, and it's fun to just get lost on the roads back there.

Love Hurricane Mtn Road / Goat path! Goes from 113 on the Maine side over to the North Side of North Conway. Last time I was up there it was newly paved. Was headed to an AutoX with a bunch of buddies. We were driving it with a little gusto and I bottomed out my 944 Turbo coming down the West side :bonk:

NRGBalanced 06-30-2012 12:45 PM

FML some accident in Mass. Running late.

mpicher 06-30-2012 10:10 PM

Awesome drive today! NRGBalanced, WRXGuy1 and I met up at LL Bean Outlet in North Conway. We headed up the Kanc towards Lincoln, NH. The traffic was a bit much on the Kanc (why do all the Harley drivers have to drive so slow with those big V Twins?).

We had some great burgers and a frosty beverage at The Common Man in Lincoln and then headed North on 93. Franconia Notch was awesome and the run across rte 3 / 302 was very good as well.

I broke off and stayed on 302 at Bear Notch Road where NRGBalanced & WRXGuy1 headed South on Bear Notch. The traffics gods were with me as I headed North past the Mt. Washington mountain road, across 2 to Maine and the 26 to 219 and eventually into Augusta around 8 pm.

My break-in miles are finally done and he car feels amazing when you run it out to 6/7k.

Hope you guys had a good run back! I'm sure photos will be posted. Stopped for some nice shots at the Mt Washington Hotel.

Mike

Too bad you broke off, Bear Notch Rd was a lot of fun, and very little traffic. There was a Porsche in front of us about half way in that was enjoying the winding roads as well, we kept right up ;)

It was great meeting both you guys!

Happy 4th everyone!

western MA, southern VT drive (Thu, 7/5) late afternoon:

I'm doing a dry run of most of the planned route after work tomorrow before the main event (Sun, 7/8). I suspect just about everyone is too far away and/or working too late, but PM me if you want to join me on Thu. Going with someone would allow me to not only check road conditions, but also test the radios I got in yesterday.

Sony 07-28-2012 10:35 AM

Gonna head to this meetup today probably.

http://www.facebook.com/events/411103208941449/

It's $5 but at least 40 other cars will be there probably more.

Deslock 08-04-2013 02:03 PM

ANYONE WANT TO GO FOR A FUNRUN DRIVE?

Meet at/near Whole foods in Sudbury, MA, and go for a backroads rip through Central MA?

I can build the route to any length, but 1-2hr is usually pretty good.
