Put Car in Reverse While Going 15mph

Not too long ago I was driving down the street and my elbow hit the reverse gear while I was driving forward at 15mph. There was a whining noise during that moment but the transmission seems to be working fine now. Should I be worried that I damaged anything? Yes it's an auto...Please don't bash me on having an automatic FRS.

You went from drive to neutral to reverse while moving, hence the grinding. Probably no severe long term damage if it works fine so far, I wouldn't be careless and do it again though can't be too good for the clutch packs

Edit: people are saying you can't even get out of drive a safety feature on all cars is that you can easily slide the lever from drive to neutral at any point without pressing anything.....

Packofcrows 06-09-2015 08:54 PM

BLAH, I see you drive a auto. Ignore what I typed.

Chanpion 06-09-2015 08:56 PM

The autos are smart, they'll disengage and won't actually go into reverse saving your gearbox. If you're travelling forward fast.

ducky369 06-09-2015 09:04 PM

how do you go reverse traveling 15mph? i thought you need to step on the brakes to be able to switch to reverse?

I wouldn't try it hahaha!

Automatic with intelligence. I believe all new Toyota's are like that. Can shift into reverse while going forward with nothing bad happening. Great for tailgaters. Haha

Don't u have to press the botton on shifter to go in reverse?? ...😰

Obja 06-10-2015 02:58 AM

it's okay to drive an automatic, there's nothing to be ashamed of ahahah

fitcious 06-10-2015 03:01 AM

no buttons needed for reverse.

I was pondering this 2 days ago! Not willing to try this on a brand new car. Thanks for posting this! :P

Btw, I have an auto. Only people who have said something about it were kids who drive rusted out/beat to hell Honda Civics.

Timmy_Jones 06-10-2015 03:29 PM

I'm not sure I understand....how did you pull up on the reverse lockout by accident and hit reverse? Does your car have mudflaps, the rally editions of these cars could do full reverse at 80+ MPH.

HotLavaFRS 06-10-2015 04:04 PM

I tried to process this in my head like you had a manual trans and couldn't figure it out. I'm not a smart person.

WhiteFRS69 06-10-2015 04:09 PM

It's an auto so no reverse lockout.

ProjectoGL 06-10-2015 05:13 PM

how close do you sit for your elbow to hit the shifter? hahaha I too have an auto...no worries :P

Really close haha! I just have a habit of sitting extremely close to the steering wheel. Always have since I've had a car.

AznBRZer 06-10-2015 05:30 PM

I can see how someone can go from D to N, but with the shifter being gated, how the hell do you get past the lock-out(there's a solenoid that releases while pressing the brake to allow you to shift) without hitting the brakes? I'm pretty sure you can't go from R to N, so it makes no sense to be able to do the reverse.

Batmangt86 06-10-2015 07:03 PM

I put my manual into reverse once while going about 5 mph and even have a video of it lmao!

So you gave your Automatic Gear lever the people's elbow so it went from Drive (assuming you weren't using the paddles) through neutral and into reverse.

Yup. I got a bunch of headlight fluid to sell you guys.

Fishbed77 06-10-2015 07:58 PM

Car is totaled.

Batmangt86 06-10-2015 07:59 PM

Yeah. Just give it to me now.

Ok, I tried it and apparently, you CAN "row" the shifter through the gate with no problem. You can go from R-N-D and back without stepping on the brake. You can even put it in P without hitting the brake too. I'll try taking it out of P without the brake tomorrow.

904FRSlow 06-11-2015 12:07 AM

Just keep it in manual mode

Would only bash you if you live in western NC--where all the great roads are. :D

But can you go from D to P or R doing 10mph? I think it locks when you are over 5 10 15 mph or something

Sometimes I can't get it to go R without being in full stop

FirestormFRS 06-16-2015 03:45 PM

Modern AT's will not engage reverse internally if the car is moving forward at speed. The shifter may go into the gate but the transmission will not.
