Brake caliper paint

I did a search and couldn't find a topic for this yet.

Is anybody planning on painting their brake calipers? Or have already done so?

I wonder how a standard blue color caliper paint would look on a WRB BRZ.

NO

I was thinking about painting mine black when I get my Asphalt FR-S

ihaskrayon 06-16-2012 02:13 AM

I'm considering doing metallic purple to go along with purple lugs. But most likely I wont even bother

Calidrifter 06-16-2012 02:28 AM

Only color that would go with that Blue is Gold.

lordtakuban 06-16-2012 07:44 AM

If painting your calipers, I would use the G2 Paint system. That stuff really lasts. It's like a 2-part epoxy kind of paint. And they have quite a few different colors. They sell it at TireRack and I'm pretty sure you can get it on Amazon.com and ebay and other places too.

Is anyone interested in Decals for the calipers? like "FR-S" or "BRZ" or "GT-86" or something else? I can make them in 12 different colors and also a carbon fiber textured vinyl. Though, I don't recommend the CF vinyl for calipers. I already do caliper decals in "Spyder" or "MR2" and pricing would be the same at $10 for a set of 4 decals. If there is any interest, let me know what you would like them to say and I'll add them to my site:

Hi-temperature Vinyl?

Just Scion would be interesting?

atledreier 06-18-2012 01:41 AM

Definetly getting my calipers painted. Fiery red on my DGM GT86 will look gorgeous, I think.

OrbitalEllipses 06-18-2012 01:59 AM

If you want to avoid G2, VHT brake caliper paint is just as good even though it's a spray. You'll want to clear and bake it, of course.

Believe it or not, regular vinyl holds up just fine once you paint the calipers. the outer area doesn't really get all that hot. I've had mine in place for 5+ years. I'll start working up a few different designs (the 86 circle might be possible. as well as one with the pistons, but a lot of the detail can be lost on a solid color cut vinyl). I'll post in this thread with pics once I have a couple designs worked out.

Speaking about G2, it definitely is more expensive than any sprays out there. But it really is that good. And the finish really lasts. I would recommend trying to find it on Amazon.com if you can get free shipping and maybe a bit of a discount. You could also try eBay, but buyer beware as always with eBay. TireRack does carry all the colors, but you won't find much of a deal there.

I have heard some people liking the VHT paint, but I haven't seen their calipers in person to comment on its quality vs G2.

^ I agree with him. The only "feasible" color that would go well with a blue WRB BRZ are gold brake calipers.

Nate219BRZ 06-22-2012 11:54 AM

Im going red on a GBS. Has anyone got estimate for powder coating?

have you went to the track in any of those 5 years?

i've had air caps melt after a hard session, you're saying a piece of plastic attached to the caliper is not going to be damaged?

Yes I have. They have not melted. They were also put on after the G2 paint was applied (Not sure how much that helped with heat). Remember, they're not on the rotor. They're on the outer part of the caliper.

What color would match a whiteout FR-S? I was thinking gold, but I plan on getting gold wheels and I don't what so much gold haha

Mild2Wild 06-25-2012 10:02 AM

I can see gold/bronze or red looking good with just about any color you can buy these cars in...

was385 06-25-2012 10:21 AM

I bought a kit of red for when I was getting a CBS, but now that I ended up with a WRB, I'm just not sure if it would look good. If anyone wants to photoshop a mockup that would be great.

eriktherod 06-25-2012 10:24 AM

Thinking of doing mine in red, I still have the G2 paint I planned on using for my Si but never got around to it...

Double4Free 06-25-2012 10:35 AM

Painting your calipers red = +10 HP :D

Mo707 07-01-2012 01:46 AM

I have a Whiteout FR-S and trying to paint mine red.
Does it void any warranty?
And does anyone know the tool required to remove the tire safety bolt or what ever?

Lol @ warranty, no.
The wheel lock? Probably in your trunk or glovebox, not really many other storage spots in the car.

Make sure to anyone painting their callipers to make sure you paint your exposed brake pads too, and don't bother taping anything off. See this shit on probably 75% of painted calipers.

Best of luck to anyone that thinks this actually looks good.

Well thanks,
Im only doing it for the time being. I want to get a new exhaust and intake before anything... :iono:

It's high temp paint; obviously, how it looks in the end is all in how you prep and your technique. I've seen some AMAZING paint jobs out of a rattle can.

Gen 07-01-2012 11:36 AM

I wouldn't paint the calipers...but if you insist...

Using a dremel carefully and sand paper to smooth the calipers out will give you the best result by far. Just cleaning your calipers with degreaser and throwing paint on it will always look terrible because the finish will NEVER be smooth. Expect to spend 8-10 hours to do a decent job.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure it would look better with the wheels on but like i said im only doing it until i can afford new one.

Heero 07-01-2012 09:44 PM

Will degreasing + sanding be good enough?

I don't have a dremel. Trying to make the calipers black.

You'll have a whole lot of sanding to do if you want a smooth finish. :D

Hand sanding calipers is going to be a BITCH. Highly suggest you invest in some kind of motorized device to assist you, it will definitely be worth the time you save in sanding. You could also probably get them media blasted, but that requires buying expensive equipment or paying someone to do it.

Since we know STI brakes fit and bleeders can be swapped from top to bottom, I might be interested in selling a reconditioned set soon...

Might as well just bring them to a full polish for the amount of work it would take hahaha.

OrbitalEllipses 07-02-2012 09:00 AM

Aww yeah polished calipers.

notFRS 07-03-2012 02:13 AM

Funny that I don't recall ever seeing that on any forum or in real life. Which I think is for the best.
Stock callipers should remain stock, leave the coloured callipers for the BBK.

GuySmily 07-03-2012 02:37 AM

I like the rough look of unsanded for some reason. Like hammered metal. That said, the sanded/glossy look is nice too - looks more stock.

This is VHT caliper spray. Lasted for several years, but it's finally faded/chipped up. My buddy used brush on stuff and his has been on for 5+ years. Not sure if I"m going to try that or the G2 next.

Sorry about the gif - I was trying to decide how much lip kit to install (front, +sides, +rear) and what color (red, flat black, gloss black). Lost the original image.

I don't currently, but I can take some pics using my car as the model. I have not painted my calipers though, so they will be the stock gray color. Do you have any color in mind that you'd like to see? And which design(s)?

Vinyl wrap on the hood of a car in climates like Arizona with the sun and engine temps baking away constantly and it holds up !
SO - I used brake caliper covers, wrapped in a chrome and a clear layer, thinking since the covers act as coolers, and a bit of a heat sink, vinyl wrap would hold up.
Sure did ! - Until hard tracking burned and bubbled the front vinyl. Rears are like new !

Based on my experience, I assume car wrap vinyl will cook if directly on the caliper, unless perhaps daily driving only.
