Looks like a fun ride...

just a word of warning, you're going to get flamed for the underglow...

brianhj 05-12-2015 01:02 AM

You're not hitting 200 unless you go with e85

smg1138 05-12-2015 01:27 AM

Why would anyone buy a lightweight, RWD sports car like the 86 with a slushbox? There are some things in this life I will just never understand.

brianhj 05-12-2015 01:28 AM

Oh boy here we go

I say the same thing lol, you ruin the fun of it with an auto.

But back on subject, nice build!

Grishbok 05-12-2015 01:45 AM

lug nuts are a mod now? man I feel old...

Jake360 05-12-2015 02:21 AM

i always thought you weren't supposed to mod a leased car?

Thunderleg 05-12-2015 03:35 AM

I really enjoyed when you backed the car up in the video. A+

Better question, why would anyone buy a car that you have to shift yourself, in 2015. Maybe back in the 80's... Before modern tech. But damn, some people are just set in their ways.

Brb I'll just be ignorant and call all autos 'slushboxes' !!! Herp derp

Buy what YOU want with YOUR money. Don't shit on someone else for THEIR choice with THEIR money.

SUB-FT86 05-12-2015 08:11 AM

To answer the guys above who don't understand why anybody would buy a automatic in a sports car. First of all if the FR-S had a antiquated automatic like a FD Rx7,Supra,and 300ZX then I could see your argument for it not making sense. But the reason people buy the auto and love it is because it's the best of both worlds. I use my paddles when the road is very low on traffic and put mines in auto when the roads are infested with an abundance of slow driving individuals. I prefer conditions where I can rev past 2500-3000 rpms because for me a manual is 0 fun in traffic-like speeds if I can't rev it how I see fit to use it. I'm glad Toyota gave the FR-S/BR-Z a auto that's fun with sport mode and I never have regrets about not getting the manual.

Dude it's a slush box. Youre linked to the drive wheels via a torque converter using fluid. There's nothing advanced or modern about the AT in this car, it's a standard slush box.

ItzYaBoyBugZ 05-12-2015 08:53 AM

I just ordered custom E tune from OFT, will keep posted, waiting on contact from them to start data logging process, I agree probably more 180whp ish ... hoping custom tune helps a bit, not doing ecutek right now it isn't for me "leased car" as far as tranny goes
I've had over 45 cars, majority of them manual, my car I traded in for this manual.Do I miss it yes, Do I love manual yes, Is it more fun yes... now here are some pro's of having an auto... I have poor credit and my family wouldn't co sign other wise... GOT EXTREMELY LUCKY!! wasn't going to turn down new car over tranny so here I am in a auto, however 75 percent of time i'm using tiptronic , which is like manual etc
I know I need to GO TO WORK, BUILD CREDIT and RIP OFF MY NEON LIGHTS and strangle myself with them for buying an auto, but after done that, I'm going to enjoy my car

Shit man, lighten up. I can still have fun in my auto all the time, or I could hate my life when I'm in stop and go traffic for my 2 hour commute to work, or not even notice I'm driving a manual on my 3 km drive to the grocery store for some milk.

Also, another pro is that I can go out to the bar with my girlfriend, have a few too many beers with dinner and toss her the keys. I don't need to worry about her burning out a clutch, grinding gears or needing to teach her to drive manual. All I have to worry about is her crashing it, which would be fine with me. I wouldn't mind an insurance payout.

Mim 05-12-2015 09:15 AM

The reverse part cracked me up. Sounds great and yea ignore the auto haters, they don't know what they're missing out on. Sports mode ftw :)

raven1231 05-12-2015 09:18 AM

I never understood why people give a shit about what other people get on thier cars. If you don't like autos great don't get one and move the hell on.

drewbot 05-12-2015 09:28 AM

It took 6 posts in for an A/T hater haha...new record?

Also, your setup sounds mean AF I like the video haha....but the reverse? lol

I like to hear all the silly excuses

NOHOME 05-12-2015 09:47 AM

I am a dedicated manual transmission driver. However, I will also admit that is an affectation to a large degree because, for the day to day driving chores that the car needs perform, it makes no difference whatsoever.

Whatever the spouted virtues of a Manual gearbox may be, they cease to exist when the car spends most of its time in commuter traffic.

brianhj 05-12-2015 09:52 AM

Like the "I drive all day in traffic" excuse

man you guys are more brutal than I remember. This guy has no credit or job or whatever he said, was asking his parents to cosign, and is obviously really young. Give this kid a break..I bet all of your decisions when you were 17 or 18 weren't exactly phenomenal (at least not in the eyes of 20-30-somethings).

Also in regards to the automatic, I don't understand what the big deal is. I can put it in manual mode and rev up to red line and downshift to get power on demand. I don't feel disconnected from my amazingly fun vehicle at all. In fact, I love the car even more since I avoid the annoying situation of having to shift during traffic.

Ok. How about this because it's so hard for you to understand. I drive an auto because I wanted an auto. Or because I'm a ***** ass bitch. Take your pick. Given your attitude, you seem like an option B elitist snob.

That's what I'm saying. Auto in traffic, set it and forget it. Manual when you want some fun. I don't few the huge disparity coming from dailying a manual in my previous car. Plus, the auto shifts far better and more efficiently than I could when I'm going fast.

Nah, the record for non directly tranny related thread was 3 posts and that one went sideways so fast and so hard it was deleted after about 20.

Hitler never understood why all the other country leaders never felt the same way as him too.

:sigh: I like hearing your opinion on a car you DO NOT pay for.

True manual is dying and its dying pretty fast.
Autos now are more efficient, shift faster, still allow manual input of gear selection, and in most cases perform better than a standard gated manual.
Alfa 4c = Auto
Jaguar F-Type = Auto
Nissan GT-R = DCT = Auto
Ferrari 458 = DCT = Auto
LaFerrari = DCT = Auto
Corvette C7 z06 = Manual or Auto, but the auto is faster
Koenigsegg Agera - DCT = Auto
All new McLarens = DCT = Auto
I am sensing a pattern here, not sure what it is though...

If pushing the clutch and shifting gears makes you feel like a superior person then by all means go for it, but nobody really cares.

As for the purpose of the thread before people with no valid or constructive opinions get involved, you probably have close to 180-185HP and will only hit 200 once you go E85. Nice build though and glad you are doing what you want with the car, that is what it is designed for.

Not trying to add fuel to the fire.. people can do what they want. But DCT isn't a slushbox.. it's dry and can't be categorized the same as a typical torque converter.

lol @ this thread.

EDIT: hahaha just read the original post more closely... StreetGlow OPTX, Carbon Fiber Hood Struts, stupid UEL headers, etc... congrats on the ultra-riced auto FR-S, guy.

True, but if we are classifying transmission types: DCT falls into the automatic spectrum.

Basically what I see (and its not just this post or this forum): if you do not have a third pedal you are not driving a real car. None of those aforementioned cars have a third pedal and thus must not be real cars.

Lol..

Are you seriously comparing DCTs to the FRS's slushbox auto?

Sure, there is a trend towards DCTs in the industry.. but for this particular car the Auto is slower.. therefore in my opinion useless
