Academic question

Could not decide where to post it but here it is. From max rpm, gear ratios, diff. ratio, wheel and OEM tires, it looks that you can reach 60.4 mph (97.2 kph) in second. I know it's not an exact science, but would explain the good time reported by Car&Driver for 0-60mph whereas the 0-100kph is nothing to write home about since you do have to shift to 3rd gear.

You own the car, can't you test it yourself?

That's a sweet answer! Thank's sooo much.

rucfj159 04-25-2015 10:48 PM

brandonblt2 04-25-2015 10:52 PM

you have to launch the car

gramicci101 04-25-2015 10:55 PM

What exactly is your question?

On a closed course in a vacuum with perfectly formulated asphalt at the proper temperature Michael Schumacher could get a FRS 0-60 like the magazine says

Actually it's more an observation than a question but how much time you loose by shifting. The best drivers and the loosy ones. I mean driving the car not abusing it.

gramicci101 04-25-2015 11:12 PM

It's not just shifting. You don't spend a lot of time at the perfect rpm; you're either working up to it or moving past it, which means you're using less than max power. It would be interesting to see 0-60 from a cvt that could hold you at max torque and change ratios to speed the car up as fast as possible without bogging the engine.

BRZJunkie 04-25-2015 11:20 PM

but actually if you compare our car to others, most people quote 0-60mph or 0-100kph. By using 0-100kph it looks worse because of the need to shift one more gear. That's all I was bringing up.

when playing top trumps, this is a genuine disaster. for the bragging rights, the low top speed is far more humiliating. for driving, zero of the expletive word is given. male enhancements can be had cheaper (sock in pocket etc.)

When in a d1ck measuring contest about speed you will come up short. Shove some socks down the front of your pants and call it a day.

I believe he said he was posting this as an "academic" question, meaning what is theoretically possible. Car and driver employes "semi" professional drivers (semi in only that they are not necc race drivers). I would think they can get a better time than most of us.

Hey.. You gotta do what you gotta do.

Academically speaking, fuel cutoff comes in around 58-59 mph in my academic experience so there is a fudge factor required when going from calculation to data collection.

Mmmm fudge.

I'd just pull the 18" double-ended monster out of my trunk and smack him upside the head with it.

Tcoat has reminded me of a joke. It is about the Texas A&M Aggies (I'm a "Tea-sip") but you could just substitute any rival college or athletic team:

A University of Texas and a Texas A&M student decide to go to South Padre Island for spring break. When they get there, the Aggie notices that the Longhorn is having no trouble meeting girls while the Aggie is not having any luck.

He asks the UT guy what his secret is. The Longhorn replies, "What you need to do is get a medium sized potato and put it into your bathing suit. Then the girls will come running."

Thinking this to be good advice, the Aggie goes to the local HEB and buys a medium sized potato. He follows his friend's instructions and puts it in his bathing suit. Rather than flocking to him, though, the girls begin to scream and run away. In confusion, the Aggie asks the Longhorn what is wrong. The Longhorn takes one look and says, "You're supposed to put it down the FRONT!!"

I'm from Texas, and I can assure you that this story is NOT apocryphal.

I am not an uneducated man but I had to look that one up!

Like everything else it probably depends on where you are in a given Sate/Province. Where I live the 86 is pretty rare but other imports are common. Drive an hour one direction and there are almost 86s on every single street corner. Drive two hours the other way and you would swear that the only cars ever built were Chargers and Challengers (Chrysler plant there).

Tromatic 05-01-2015 02:13 PM

If you are worried about 0-60 in the FR-S, "you bought the wrong car".
