Someone rear ended me - at the DEALER

I just finished picking up my license plates and while I was waiting to get on the feeder, an employee was leaving the dealership and rear-ended me. Less than 600 miles on the clock. She had insurance, I have insurance, but before I go drop it off at a body shop to get fixed, is there anything you think the dealership could/should do for me? It was on their property and their employee hit me. Totally not my fault. I wasn't even moving.

seriously bummed...

Jfheisenberg 04-20-2015 10:03 PM

That sucks man, i dont think the dealership could do anything, maybe just ask them to hook you up with with a rental car? Its their employee fault and the employee has insurance which they should take care of the problem.

kch 04-20-2015 10:32 PM

Was the employee on company business, or was she going home? This isn't legal advice and it can vary depending on your jurisdiction, but generally if she was off the clock the dealership doesn't have to do anything.

LS1M 04-20-2015 10:54 PM

She was heading home. Just didn't see me there I guess, or in a hurry. Oh well. **it happens... I just wish it hadn't. Saved up for years so I could drive a new car. Now I don't have one any more...

Stay Fresh Car Care 04-21-2015 01:38 AM

Post a pic of the damage.

soulreapersteve 04-21-2015 01:39 AM

Man, that sucks! You'll get it back soon. As the saying goes, time makes the heart grow fonder... I think that's the saying.

LS1M 04-21-2015 02:12 AM

I'm gonna try to post a picture, see if it works. This really really sucks. I can't even sleep I'm so pissed. From the looks of it, I don't think the frame was bent or anything. It drove fine on the way home. New bumper and tail light plus that black thing on the bottom. I have never had a car in the body shop before so I don't know how long it'll take. I know they have to order new parts & paint them, so I'm thinking 2 weeks?

Turbo95eg6 04-21-2015 02:28 AM

Man that fuckin' sucks.

ryoma 04-21-2015 02:45 AM

make sure the insurance company pays the body shop to get you a new bumper and not just repaint it (they probably will get you a new bumper, but double check to make sure they don't cheap out on you). from the camera angle, the damage doesn't look that bad. rest well at night knowing that this is an easy fix.

NyC Zn6 04-23-2015 01:28 PM

Yea that sucks...thank god it was only the bumper and taillights. it would of sucked more if the quarter panel and trunk was damaged.

daftpunk 04-23-2015 03:55 PM

Thats sucks =(
Doublecheck the mounting points where the bumper attaches to the QP. Sometimes in a bump like that where the bumper pops out, it fractures the paint around the mounting points and causes premature rust - seen it happen on a newer WRX.

CamryDS 04-23-2015 04:15 PM

I cringed when I saw the pic -- sorry that happened. I'm SUPER anal about dmg to the car.
If that were me i'd blow my top.

You have my sympathy on this. I hope you get that eye sore repaired soon. it's still new, just "unique" now.

You're right, the insurance adjuster said the impact made a small dent under the bumper where the paint cracked, which they're going to pull out, flatten & repaint. They're waiting on parts from the dealer and estimate it'll be done on Tuesday. I still feel a little sick when I think about it, but I'm getting better. I am so paranoid about door dings, I park away from other cars, and then this.

I finally got a response from the dealer. He can't trade out the car because it's been titled already, but he offered me free synthetic oil changes for life. Not super excited about having someone else work on my car. It's never ended well for me. I asked if maybe he could just upgrade my rims, just a little something to give it some curb appeal and distract a buyer from the carfax report. We'll see...

This has been just an awful week for me. The first rental car they gave me smelled like someone smoked in it, then dumped a big bottle of cologne out to cover the smell. I got one now that doesn't make my eyes bleed. And I found out yesterday that every time I go to sleep, I nearly die. Can't wait to see what happens next week...

I'm going to get the body shop to snap some pictures now that the bumper's off. Maybe it's not so bad. Can't wait to get Ruby back...

soulreapersteve 04-24-2015 09:22 AM

Hope the weekend fares better for you and next week is all smiles. Really does suck what happened.

Once you get her back, it'll all be but a distant memory~

vroom4 04-24-2015 09:29 AM

I'd take the oil changes.

Then again, I hate oil changes.

I would take the oil changes, for a couple reasons: 1) Its free, and they do dozens of those daily at the dealership. Hard to screw up something that is done so often (it does happen, but extremely rare, I've never had an issue). and 2) As long as that manager is there, your car will be treated like gold. If you are still worried about them working on your car, just ask them to see the container that the oil came out of...it will be a small barrel or jug, they don't have big drums of the synthetic like conventional oil.

Ammunition 04-24-2015 03:07 PM

That suck, and I'm sorry to hear about this. Last year when my friend got his new Mazda3 (his first new car), someone scraped the shit out of his front bumper and fender four days later - it was a hit and run, too.

I hope everything works out for you, and getting your car fixed up!

As @HunterGreene said, I'd take the oil changes in a second, particularly if you plan on keeping the car "forever" as you said. That could be way more valuable then a new set of wheels. Be sure to get it in writing though.

This is really generous on the part of the dealer given that it has nothing to do with the dealership since the perpetrator was not on company business.

White64Goat 04-24-2015 07:16 PM

Free synthetic oil changes for life? Winner, winner chicken dinner. You gotta figure if they use Subie oil that's gotta be what? About $5+ a quart? Even if you have to pay for the filter, it's a win.

Buying NAPA synthetic on sale for $3.79 and a filter at $5.79 is near $30 if you do a DIY oil change.

LS1M 04-25-2015 02:57 PM

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Going against the vibe here and getting black STI rims :) I'm horribly anal about these types of things. Over the 15 years I owned my last car, my wife drove it once, my boss once (long story), oil change at the dealer never, and when I let Discount Tire work on it they lifted up by the exhaust manifold and broke a bolt off. Comes from a prior life as an ASE mechanic working at Sears. Too many stories...

Now if I can just stay alive until Tuesday I'll be back in business.

I had the body shop send me a picture of the frame "damage" which amounts to a little dent:

Drewfellas 04-25-2015 03:11 PM

Damn....

Turbo95eg6 04-25-2015 09:42 PM

Would they even fix a dent like that?

It broke the paint so they're going to fix it to prevent future rust

Car's not done yet. Got another weekend to spend with the rented Impala

Packofcrows 06-02-2015 10:08 PM

totaled in my eyes.

New dealer car! part it out!

jk jk man that blows! Hope its fixed asap.

LS1M 06-03-2015 01:53 PM

It's fixed now. Been driving it a couple of weeks since then. You'd never notice it, but I do - a slight blob of paint on the edge, the gaps aren't perfect, one side squeaks when I press on it. Nobody else would ever notice, but I'm over it now. On to bigger, better things...

Sorry to read this dude. Anywhere i go i make sure that i don't park near vans or large vehicles because our car is low and they might not see it while backing up.

By the looks of it they will likely replace the bumper and the lights. Is there any dents? If yes might take 3 weeks to repair those. Shipping time on new parts may add up to the time too.

They need to redo it. How's the color match?

Spacemane969 06-28-2015 09:49 PM

It's one thing to be cautious on your first trip from the dealer but I would never imagine this happening, unreal. Sorry to hear man, and I hope your health issues improve. Try to take it easy

The panels all line up. Where are the gaps? That's just not natural.
