Dealers wrongly mounted your front plate, blocking airflow

Dealers probably drilled in the plastic bumper and mounted your plate as follows:

This is also the case with many other gt86 in town:
http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/...psuzduqvnd.jpg

However dealers likely chose to attach the mount using the upper two holes instead of the bottom two holes.

Do your radiator and car a favor by shift up your plate mount and screw in the bottom holes instead the upper holes. IMO car will get at least 15% more air flow. It's suppose to be the bottom two holes anyways...

The curvature also fits perfectly!! :w00t:

Summer's here, why not keep things cooler under the hood?

P.S License plate blockage may also affect performance see VW dyno test

Overheating wont be an issue. It's just a good practice to remove any unnecessary heat

Autocon 04-18-2015 08:57 PM

I mounted my front plate to a box in my closet. Airflow is great.

Tromatic 04-18-2015 08:59 PM

Do you really believe that having a plate mounted there causes a cooling issue?

1GiantTurtle 04-18-2015 09:14 PM

i didn't wana scratch the paint!

Ultramaroon 04-18-2015 09:14 PM

Mine is installed properly. I've always wondered why there was a stupidly designed plate bracket. Regardless of real functional impact, and yes, oil/inter cooler right behind it would be less efficient.

Makes sense now because professional dealer installation.

Happens on Miatas, why not other cars?

Dealers around here don't install the plate unless you tell them to (thankfully)

it won't, but if you are really worried you can always pad the edges...

Pics, please. ETA: And data logs showing how having a center-mounted plate means overheat.

kpamir 04-18-2015 09:28 PM

hmmm thats the case with mine.... ill have to remount it.

It is a relatively easy job I assume.

you can wrap the edges with soft/rubber tape. or just stick 1 or 2 small transparent rubber bumper pads against the edges

El cheappo mod ftw;)

Jegan_V 04-18-2015 10:30 PM

I would prefer if we didn't even need the front plate to begin with. Even now I don't really know of its true purpose, as far as I'm aware the enforcement cameras like red light cameras and photo radar track the rear.

Meh, it probably gets way more than it needs anyway. More does not always mean better. If the designers felt it needed more flow they would have made those fake vents real.
Now if I was running an inter cooler or some other add on it may be a concern but on stock it is no biggy.

Tromatic 04-19-2015 12:01 AM

An off-center plate does help ID the tards.

http://i1011.photobucket.com/albums/...s/mdr-ordi.gif I don't think the state would let me have one like that.

I don't even have a license, much less a plate for it.

hmmmmm........I drove a 2006 Miata, with the front plate mounted in the center of the grill, for 88,000 miles, throughout the Western US and Canada, over a period of 8 years ...... highest air temperature was 113 degrees F ...... and never had a overheating problem ...... :iono:

As I have a BRZ, I'm not drilling holes in my bumper and I'd rather not get tickets...

That's cause that's where it's designed to be :) Earlier Miatas had a license plate mount that was made to stick up above the grill. A minor tap would force the screws through the front bumper, so people would flip the mount. They'll overheat if that's done though...
