Just installed TRD exhaust. Too loud?
I just got a trd exhaust. Brand new. I've driven it about 100 miles and its pretty loud. It's fine while cruising but loud below 3000 rpm. Particularly boomy under low RPM heavy load and on decel. But if I'm just cruising, light load, not loud.
I'd even say that it's quieter at high rpm than at low rpm. I'm wondering if the exhaust will quiet down, get less boomy, as it breaks in or if I have an exhaust leak. Like I said it's not loud at high rpm but boomy at low rpm. I did not like the nuts and bolts that connect the muffler to the catback pipe, they were weird and hard to turn. They appeared to be oblong nuts? I've checked for leaks by crawling under the car a bit and cannot find any carbon but it may be too early to tell. Anyone else think the TRD exhaust is too loud? I got this thing because it's supposed to be quieter than the other exhausts!!! Maybe I'm getting old. |
Nope, that's what it sounds like. Loud on cold start and booms on decel at WOT it sounds phenomenal. You'll get used to it and before you know it, who won't know how you lived without it. Great sound.
|
It isn't so much that it is loud but it does have a strong tone to it.
There are many that are much, much louder out there. Like Daem said you will get used to it. I had it right from the start so it never bothered me but when I drove the three MYs within a few minutes of each other I was really aware of how much better it sounds. |
Just some resonance at the lower RPMs, pretty much get it on all aftermarket exhausts.

I took mine off and sold it because of what you experienced. Some don't mind it. Personally it was just a tad too much for me. I was used to the BMW with a little less boomyness. These cars have a lot of road noise as it is and I didn't want to add to it.
The real issue here is sound deadening. These cars have none. If you were to sound deaden the rear of the car, it would imagine it would really reduce the cabin noise. I wasn't up for all the extra work. Don't get me wrong, I loved the sound of the TRD. you have to decide whether it's too much for you. I think it's a function of age, the older you get, the less noise you can handle. LOL |
It's probably one of the most mild sounding exhausts you can get for this car. Id say enjoy it. Soon enough you'll love downshifting just to be able to hear it.

bee-jay got it right. Less sound deadening will make it more noticeable than, say, a BMW.
The only quieter one is the Q300, which sounds almost stock at low levels. You're right that the TRD is quieter at highway levels, this is natural. I'd say give it some time. After a few months with my TRD exhaust, I grew used to it and now want a header-back system to boost the sound up a little more (along with power of course). |

Thanks for the input guys. My car is actually sound deadened already by a professional installer so it must mean the old age is definitely kicking in LOL.
Actually it did prompt me to sound deaden the trunk lid as this was not deadened and I do believe it made a bit of difference in cutting down on the booming sound. I'm going to check if the seat backs are deadened although I doubt that will make much of a difference due to the frequency of the sound. It does sound great when I'm by myself but the other night my wife fell asleep while we were driving home and I found myself *****footing as to not awaken the BEAST |
Ps my car also has TRD intake.

One of my FRS test drives had the TRD, sounded fantastic. I just wish the tips were round instead of half moon shaped.
|
The half moon shape owns. Love it.

JDM TRD QUAD Exhaust... if you don't like the half moon... hehehe I'm loving mine and I just want to add with a header, over pipe, front pipe, which one, I don't know yet. But as it is, I love the sound of the JDM TRD Quad Exhaust.

TRD Exhaust is quite unique. I love mine... and only time it is too loud is when I've got a hangover or I have no good rest. It makes 'em ugly fisting Civic exhausts a joke imo. Old TRD is nicer though. |
Speaking about the us trd exhaust, is it normal for the midpipe around the rear diff area is hanging rlly low. It is a bend part right b4 it I'd connected to the muffler. Any help is good

lol, I had to go back to 93 because I was killing my MPGs when I tried out E85. I can only image when I have the full header-back. |

It doesn't matter if you have the TRD dual or quad exhaust the mid pipe should look like this under the FR-S. http://i1011.photobucket.com/albums/...psadipnqng.jpg http://i1011.photobucket.com/albums/...psxgwwbtjd.jpg |
How does it look like on the ground? I'll try to take a picture asap

Looks like the bend in the RS exhaust may be a bit of a lesser angle and that keeps the pipe up a bit higher. There is certainly a difference between our two pics.
I am lowered as well but have only bounced it off a speed bump once so not worried about it. (Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic) |

I replacedthe resonator on the TRD I had with a better quality resonator. Quieted it down just enough and got rid of the freeway drone.

i have both the TRD exhaust and intake - sounds fantastic yet not annoying
|
I drove on the freeway today, it did get annoying at one point because I was on the hands free phone and going uphill made it a little boomy. Other than that, there's no issue.
