Flywheel rattle only when cold?
I've been searching this issue for about a month now, trying to figure out what it is. I've taken it to the dealer a few times about the noise, and they've never been able to replicate it. Any time I take the car to the dealer after work (5-10 minute drive, traffic depending) it is already warm enough that the sound is gone. Due to a job change, not being able to get a loaner car and other life issues, its been impossible to leave the car at the dealer for them to replicate the noise.
It sounds like flywheel rattle/chatter to me. Upon cold starting the engine and letting it get down to its 650 RPM idle, the sound begins. Push the clutch in and its gone. Clutch out and the sound is present. Once the car is warm, the sound goes away completely. This YouTube video IS NOT MINE and IS NOT MY CAR. The sound is identical though. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTjwmCJrd2s"]BMW 335i Spec clutch single mass flywheel chatter at idle - YouTube[/ame] Things in life have settled down, so the car will be going into the shop this week. I just want to know what this noise is, and if its as serious as I feel it is. Thanks! |
My FRS does the exact same thing! Please let me know if you figure out the cause
|
Same thing here as well. Not nearly as loud as that BMW though. Goes away when the car is warmed up. Anyone have anymore information as to the cause?
|
Will do guys. How many miles do you have on your cars? Mine has 20k on it right now.
|
Mines too please let me know wsup with it, I'm at 8000km only started noticing after I change my tranny fluid.
|
17k miles here. Have not changed the fluid.
|
I changed my fluid to Motul 300 and there was no difference in noise. I have an appointment at the Subaru garage late this month. They'll let me know what needs done.
How hard do you guys drive your cars? I've been told I drive like a grandpa and I don't drive my car hard. |

I have 80% freeway miles on my car 17,500 miles on the odometer Car is 7-8 months old. |
Anyone? starting to bug me now
|
There's about 10+ threads on this issue, nobody seems to know why. Only happens when cold. Goes away when you press the clutch in. Nothing to be alarmed about, but it can be alarming and/or embarrassing
|
I have an appointment at the dealer to get it looked at on the 28th. I'll post what they come up with.
Edit: 86Tony, if it bothers you so much maybe you should take it to the dealership as well. Maybe you'll get in before me. |

I might just bring it in. I will book an appoint next week to see wussup
|
i can tell you straight up if your flywheel was "rattling" you got some serious problems and the car would be undrivable. more likely your pressure plate/throwout bearings
|
Any updates I might just call in tmwr to book an appointment. After I flash my car with OFT noise is only at idle when I Rev it a lil you can hear it but barley
|
I take my car in tomorrow. Will update when details become available.
|
Just got a call from the dealer.
It turns out its something to do with the input shaft on the transmission that's making this noise. Its weird, because I never had any shifting issues or anything of that nature. They ordered a new transmission and I'll be getting it replaced May 13. This sucks. From what I understand, its safe to drive. It just sucks. |
mine has had this too since probably.... 8k miles. I dont think its anything to worry about. And i'm honestly really surprised that the dealer is straight up replacing the whole trans for this "issue"
part of me thinks the noise will still be there(if they dont change out the clutch/pressure plate as well), or come back after several thousand miles. I'm genuinely curious. please report back. |

but actual failures of synchros/gears are basically limited to those running over 300 rwtq. i'm sure there has been a few bad ones out there though. |

New transmission is in. So far there hasn't been any chatter noise upon a cold start (35F this morning) and normal idle.
I only noticed a brief noise when the A/C compressor kicked on after turning on the heat. I guess the problem is fixed. The dealership sent the defective tranny back to Subaru. I asked the parts/service rep if Subaru would say what failed or caused the failure, and he said no. If there was an issue with it, the only way they would know is through a bulletin or TSB. I'll keep listening for the noise, but with it finally warming up outside it might be impossible to mimic the conditions. |
