Black exhaust
 

So after looking at all the different exhaust options so far, I got to thinking... Why hasn't anyone done one in black?

I am not claiming to know anything at all about how the heat would affect painting or plating in black, but every once in a while when I am driving around SoCal I see a Porsche, Ferrari, or Lambo with blacked out exhaust tips. It looks pretty cool usually. Perhaps its way to expensive for this price range of car.

I scrubbed the surface with a 3M Red prep pad and then painted it with high temp Engine paint. Piece of cake. You can even get the pad on a drill attachment to make it easier.

And if you're feeling REALLY punchy, the engine paint comes in all sorts of colors...

Hmm.. now that I'm thinking about it. I will probably do this to the new exhaust on my BRZ as well.

my GT-R exhaust tips are in shadow chrome which I feel is perfect, because it draws less attention, but it's not flat black either. If you want just flat-black look, I'm pretty sure you can get away with sanding and high-temp engine/brake caliper paint. But I do like the low-key look of tips.

Big ole stainless melon launcher tips grab too much attention for sure, but as highlighted with the WRX/STI picture above the problem is the muffler face behind the tip catching sunlight. That won't be too much of a problem with the BRZ given the exhausts keep the muffler section in the middle.

there are plenty of options, powder coating is one of them.

parkerizing is also another cool option. both will protect the exahust surface finish.

i hate to cross the two forums here but I watched a build up back when I was rotary powered which had a lot of exhaust and engine painting. The racing beat exhaust is actually on page one, which was later wrapped in titanium heat wrap.

I think powder coating would be a great option and most effective. Granted I used high heat paint on my headers and it chipped. I understand there was probably more heat at the header but it drove me away from ever using high heat on exhaust components.

and by painting I mean alot of ceramic coating.

The tips on my Legacy GT are pretty black after 75,000 miles of running without catalytic converters.

hehe... on my side it is more the bumper that's all black... damn sr20's... haha

Ceramic coating the exhaust would be the best option. It looks great, it protects against rust, and helps keep the exhaust heat inside the exhaust.

one thing you have to be carefull of is to make sure the engine bay does not trap too much heat.

the exahust headers is directly under the engine bay with an undercarrage. this arrangement traps a lot of exahust heat within the engine bay. with black paint on the exahust header, the exahust headers can retain even more heat as a result.

if i were to paint / powder coat my exahust, i would only do it to those areas that are expose to the external enviroment.

ceramic coat the headders would be a good choice to keep the engine bay cool, or exahust wrap the headders would acheive the same effect.
