2012 Scion Tuner Challenge Team VCMC!
http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/...tc/STCLOGO.jpg 2012 Scion Tuner Challenge FR-S Edition Team VCMC CHECK OUT THE 1st WEBISODE HERE: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTeLD6nP_LA"]Introducing Tuner Challenge FR-S Edition - YouTube[/ame] Competition: 3 Tuner Challenge Teams have been selected to compete in this 14 month challenge – 1 from each region (British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec) Teams selection will be based on the following: credibility within the automotive scene, profile within the local automotive scene, proven knowledge and ability to professionally modify a vehicle for performance competition, and demonstrated passion for motorsports. Provided with a brand new Scion FR-S and $15k in cash, teams will be modifying and competing in an FR-S in a series of 11 automotive challenges – that looks to showcase not only the merits of the car as a performance oriented, highly modifiable sports car, but to showcase the talents of each team and their ability to strategize and execute a modification plan to win as many of the challenges put in front of them Challenges will range from motorsports to more lifestyle oriented challenges:
The winner of the challenge will be determined through a points system where teams will finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd in each of the challenges and awarded points based on their finish in each. The team with the most points at the end of the 11 challenges will be crowned the 2012 Scion Tuner Challenge winner and wins the prize of owning the Scion FR-S they have been working on A 12 part webisode series will be filmed following the teams competition and behind the scenes at all events! Team VCMC looks to represent and embody the Grassroots motorsports community. The 2012 Scion Tuner Challenge FR-S Edition will let our team show the strengths of our club, the members, and the people who love racing. We want to connect with everyone who spends all week waiting to go racing on the weekend. Team VCMC will also focus on what all true racers yearn to do: WIN!!! The Team VCMC car will be extensively tested. This season alone club VCMC has more than 13 events scheduled for 2012. These days include both autocross and on track lapping days. The car build will be modeled off the current SCCA Solo Street Touring class with a hint of Street Mod for weight reduction. The official challenge rules are very relaxed, but we feel the ST model allows us to exploit a street tire perfectly, and allow for further evolution. Most importantly we want to test, test, test the car. Trusting and understanding the car before the major events will help us win. No part will ever make it to the competition if it hasn’t been tested and proven to make us faster. Of course we care about looking good but team VCMC believe in function over form. Luckily, the FR-S platform is already very appealing to the eye! Team VCMC has formed a partnership with Shift Autosport for this challenge. Their build experience and tuning expertise will be a huge asset in the technical buildup of the Scion FR-S. Shift Autosport has been a staple in the Metro Vancouver grassroots racing scene and know what it takes to compete as the guys race themselves. www.shiftautosport.ca Complete details on car build, challenges, videos, promotional contests will all be posted on the VCMC forums! This sounds awesome...looking forward to results!
|
good luck. sounds like a fun competition. Is that a consceptual drawing or one that some engineering has gone into? The AOA of the canards in your picture is way to aggressive to create anything other than drag.

This sounds awesome!!!!!

Shortly after receiving the car, we got to baseline it at the 2012 BC Autoslalom Championship. SCCA classed the Scion FR-S in CStock and among other items, the ruleset allows running any DOT tire. We decided it would be quite productive to spend the weekend racing on R compound DOT rubber as that extra grip would allow us to fully expose the handling characteristics of the stock platform. Right off the bat, we have to say we were very impressed! True to their marketing efforts, Scion has put out a true enthusiast car but left a lot of room for tweaking the setup. Due to it's wide track and relatively short wheelbase, the FRS responded very naturally to all driver inputs and corrections in transitions and steady state corners. Even with the stock, square (0 camber and toe) alignment, corner turn in was good, with mild understeer mid corner and a hint of oversteer on corner exit, depending on how greedy our right foot was. There was the od case where the electronics would get confused in extreme transitional situations and/or while left foot braking, but I would blame that on bad driving habits. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7116/7...be1bfe1c_b.jpg In the end, after a day of testing and 2 days of competitions, our two drivers Sead Causevic and Richard Basford finished 1st and 2nd in class and top 15 by the PAX index. Had it not been for a tagged cone on day 1, Richard would have had a major lead in the class and been in the top 5 overall! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8023/7...bcbf80fb_b.jpg We were very excited and pleased by the support and excitement of the autox community at this event. A lot of questions and excitement is building around this car and it's potential. Although we feel the chasis is extremely quick right off the bat, the engineers have left a ton of room for improvements, especially with power delivery. Next up, we'll be tearing down the suspension at Shift Autosport and looking at how to improve the chasis' response and adjustability! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8009/7...e0bd2c87_c.jpg Richard Basford PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW BLOG-STYLE WEBSITE! I wish there were a huge billboard which held upon itself, all the progression threads on this forum. It's hard to keep track of all these exciting events going on througout this forum! Either way this is really exciting. I'm looking forward to the time attacks.

Thanks so much for the support guys!!
We have a bunch more content coming down the pipeline soon!! This weekend the car is being overhauled by Shift Autosport an another local shop for some suspension upgrades and lightening!! We're really excited about getting the car in working shape to test more! Lots of autox, track days and other events planned! Man... its going to be a fun summer!! Richard |

Great build diary guys - loving the details. Please keep it coming!

Let's keep the updates going Rich!!
Ben |
While the Team VCMC FR-S is at a machining shop getting some custom suspension pieces made (much more about this soon), a good friend of ours stopped by Shift Autosport so we could do some quick test fitting on parts we received. I think they look great, and I know they are going to work VERY VERY well!! Richard Thank you Mr. bneale for the use of the car for an hour :D |
Your more then welcome Rich. Any time you need it, just give me a shout.
I'm looking forward to seeing the new wing on your car as well as the graphics. I'm very interested to see how the wing looks on your car. Ben |
Work continues on Team VCMC's FR-S! Shift Autosport designed and built a beautiful front splitter for the car this weekend. It will continue to develop this week as we gear up to do some testing before Challenge #1 August 26th in Barrie Ontario. After a considerable ammount of work to the suspension we had the ability to test fit our KW Variant 3's this weekend!!! For more information about this current update and more pictures go to our website: www.TeamVCMC.com As always for up to date info on the build check out our facebook: www.facebook.com/VCMCstc Richard |
Looks good so far! At least now you won't have to worry about taking a clay bar to any cone marks!! I honestly wonder how much downforce that thing really adds. Any idea clue on what the effects are for front end grip?
I can't wait to see the "Dark Knight" FR-S out on track! Keep the updates coming. Ben |
Even at low speeds we expect to see a good amount of help to the front end. This pared with a good functional rear wing will contribute to a balanced aero package.
Richard |
Testing TESTING TESTING!!! As we've said from the beginning, Testing will be a major feature of Team VCMC's path to winning. Tomorrow will be the 1st big testing day at autocrossing with our new KW suspension and many other parts! Want to learn more?? Check out our website: www.TeamVCMC.com Richard |
Team VCMC was out testing this weekend for Scion Tuner Challenge #1 autocross. We are still working out some of the teething issues with the car and working on a good setup. That being said, what a car! This was my 2nd run in the car with the new modifications and you can see I'm comfortable with pushing 100%. Team VCMC's final testing day before the car ships to Toronto for the 1st challenge of the Scion Tuner Challenge FR-S edition concluded this passed weekend.
Our car will be displayed at the Toronto Import Fest on August 25th and we will be in Barrie Ontario for Challenge #1 Autocross during the 2012 Canadian National Autoslalom Champoinship! Club VCMC did a great job supporting us this weekend allowing us to do run after run during both days of competition. This allowed us to not only test a lot of set-up changes but also meet fans of our build and give some ride alongs! Michael Denham, a member of Team VCMC, created a fantastic video documenting this weekend, check it out!! looking good! What wing did you guys put on it?
|
Quote:
The wing is an APR GTC-300 (the big boy). Luckily we measured correctly and got the mounts for a BMW E46 and they worked perfectly. Just as a side note, if anyone is looking into a wing similar to this one, some bracing will be needed for the trunk as it not the most stable of pieces. Scion did a great job making the car light, but it will need some structural help in places when you put force into it. Richard |
Thing looks like a BEAST! Good luck guys, keep us updated.
Pretty awesome how the Beamer brackets worked haha |
I always wondered what a wing a splitter would look like on these cars, and I love it! Your car looks great!
Thanks, Rick |

I thought you might have been right when I 1st saw it too. Of course one of the reasons we did go for the big one was the looks, we knew it would be functional but if you're going to go for a wing, might as well go big! Last night, however, we decided to do some aero testing with the wing. Fashioned some lengths of string to the rear window, trunk and wing, to test at what angle gives us the greatest desired effect with minimal drag. One thing we realized with the 3D shape of the GTC wing is it was made for a car with a much larger greenhouse. The edges of the wing were actually produced the cleanest flow of air due to its different shape and the air infront of the edges being uninterrupted . A bit of blind luck, but it works really well now! Richard PS. sorry for the hipstergram picture |
Good Luck this weekend Rich!!! You know I'll be rooting for you guys of course!!
I've seen this car in real life and I can tell you guys, this car is a beast at AutoX. Pictures do not do justice to the car. I can't wait to see how well they do this weekend. I wish you the best of luck. Ben |
Team VCMC Wins Challenge #1!!!!!!! http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a5/VanRich/win3.jpg Team VCMC has won 1st place in the Scion Tuner Challenge FR-S Edition Challenge #1: Autocross!! This might not be the greatest picture (and please excuse the silly face) but it does show the mounts. In all honesty you don't see a whole lot from the top and the inside is rather disappointing. Due to the 1st challenges being fairly low speed we didn't worry about the stiffness of the mounts for the rear wing. So we mounted it directly to the trunk lid, and in all truth, it isn't good enough. The trunk is so lite from stock, the whole top deck flexes if you pull on the wing a bit. We will be beefing things up for the faster events such as time attack ect over the winter and will keep you up to date! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8445/7...b74ec4b1_b.jpg If you guys have any questions about the build please don't hesitate to ask!
