Hope for a turbo in 2016?

Just read this article today. There might be hope for a turbo in 2016 after all

http://toyota-2016.com/2016-scion-fr...s-sport-coupe/

I have read a ton of articles about the possibility but this is the most recent.

raven1231 03-28-2015 04:28 PM

No, they just took the concept of the FR-S and made up a bunch of bs, making it sound as though adding specific non verifiable details some how helps legitimize the article...

8R6 03-28-2015 04:34 PM

just because it has the name "toyota" in the website name doesnt make it official.

and the interior pic is actually from a current FRS show car. lol

fitcious 03-28-2015 05:26 PM

Ha.

swarb 03-28-2015 05:56 PM

So poorly written. Pretty much every sentence has some kind of mistake.

thill 03-28-2015 06:37 PM

LOL, a 2.5L turbo engine form Subaru.. Righhhhhttttt....

Even Subaru does not have an engine with those specs in any of their vehicles at this time..

I am surprised they did not claim AWD :)

In addition, 2016 Scion FR-S will be concocted with electric motors that will serve the purpose of providing the front wheels with power, making it a 4 wheel drive sedan.

LOL, I guess I did not read enough.. Wow...

Tcoat 03-28-2015 06:53 PM

It reads like the author (not journalist) took ever single official Toyota statement from the last couple of years (no convert, turbo not likely, no multiple trim levels for FRS, etc) and turned them 180 degrees!

thill 03-28-2015 06:57 PM

Well if it was true I would look a lot like this:

Um... I'm not sure you know this, but there's a car called "Subaru WRX STI". Yes, WRX ver is 2.0L, but STI ver is EJ257 aka 2.5L turbo engine.

just sayin'

But yes, that site's info is incorrect... BUT there gonna be something interesting thing happen in '16/'17

LOL, sorry I was thinking a modern Subaru engine not one from the 80's. Your right that was a pretty big blonde moment for me..

Tromatic 03-28-2015 08:39 PM

I would just assume that a web site associated with Toyota would have a bit better handle on English.
Who would give that article/site any credibility at all?

Rampage 03-28-2015 08:47 PM

It must be April 1st early in Japan.

Mods can we close these 'new 86 will have turbo and awd' threads?

The 2016 86 has been announced in Japan. Only changes seem to be 2 new colors.

wbradley 03-28-2015 10:03 PM

So cool. I love the fact that Tetsudo Tada is right there as the front man. For once a Japanese brand shows their people and that they care about fun! This is what separates this car from a sea of anonymity IMHO. They got it right in my book. It seems most of the best Japanese cars, ie: S2000, Skyline, etc had visionaries behind them. It must be a lot more fun designing a sports car than a minivan if you are an enthusiast.

When you say that do you mean calendar year 2016 for the 2017 model year or are you saying maybe calendar year 2016 or 2017 for the mid-cycle refresh ;)

I can understand why some wonder why this car isn't turbo or supercharged. This car was not meant to be a supercar or 1/4 mile racer. I still love fast cars don't get me wrong but i'm getting it because it's tame and fun. Just driving, enjoying the ride, windows open on a nice summer night, tunes playing (not loud) on a nice twisty road or some track fun. I would buy something different if I wanted to go faster but I need a reliable car to get to work and my 94 Integra has worn out it's welcome. Time for fun (again) in my first ever new car. I drove a manual and auto and both were fun, thats the point. I know what I'm buying. I'm not buying and then having buyers remorse. That's just irresponsible. So to each their own but for me it has been a long time coming for a car like this. It's time to enjoy a proper fun sports car. :D :party0030:

Tbird232ci 03-28-2015 11:03 PM

I love car forums. Post serious/innovative tech, get two replies. Post speculation about a turbo when it's known to not be happening, 2 pages of people say "nahhhhhhh bruh"

That handling fun doesn't go away with more power though, bud. It just gets better. :P

dnieves 03-29-2015 01:29 AM

Bottom line, poorly written article with a suspicious Toyota URL using the FRS- exterior pics of the prototype FR-S and a production white FR-S with heavy riced out/gaudy red/gold and Carbon Fiber interior. I like the info on the 2015 Supra -how did this one get past us?

The person that put up this site is preying on optimistic fanboys' hope upon hope all their Toyota dreams have come true.

:)

Love the video!!! Can't wait to see the upgrades he's talking about and the new Supra. Based on his feedback, no turbo and no AWD. I don't want a turbo either, to tell you the truth. What I want is a 2.5L that puts out 250HP and gets 30MPG. That will be MORE than enough for me.

Tcoat 03-29-2015 04:23 AM

So I finally watched the Tada video and really don't see how people get so optimistic from it. He really doesn't say much of anything and the answers are more than likely scripted by the marketing folks anyway.
One thing he did seem to be very clear on was that he is not a fan of the idea for FI for these cars so that can probably be ruled out as his "more fun" plan.
Pretty much what I took away from it was "wait".

donoman 03-29-2015 04:26 AM

@Tcoat from his video, all the talk about the '86 getting canceled becomes moot.

I think the optimism comes from this video where at 1:34 he says "next two years, I will try to upgrade the performance every year. I promise". But those upgrades could be anything (lower weight, handling, etc.) except forced induction which he says he has no intentions of doing.

Shame Mr. Tada does not own Toyota, Subaru and Scion, or at least have final say on what comes out of the factory.

I was at that invite only lunch in New Zealand. He said several times during the day that he had no intention of adding a turbo.

All future Subaru engines will be 2 liter or even smaller. This is a statement from their chief engine engineer.
