Rear window shattered by itself
Hey everyone
So on Monday, my rear window basically imploded without warning. I had closed my passenger side door and my rear window shattered. There was no vandalism (it's a gated, secure parking lot) and I literally have no idea why it happened. I called up my Subaru dealership but they said they wouldn't touch it, I had to go through insurance. Clearly there had to be something wrong with the glass or the car itself. I am getting the glass replaced right now (luckily my insurance has a $0 glass deductible, not that I wanted to even use them). Hopefully it does not happen again. Has this happened to anyone else? Just curious if there is a flaw with the car that caused it to happen. https://scontent-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...7a&oe=55B4169A |
Holy, that's nuts.
I always lightly shut my doors, my dad got me started with that habit when he first got his Camry. He always said "son, this is a toyota, it's made much better than the American garbage you're used to" |
I would be very surprised if there wasn't something that hit the window to compromise the integrity (you may not have ever noticed it, or it happened recently). The door closing just gave it that little extra pressure to make it finally pop.
...or maybe it really is defective. |
Have had it happen with other cars. To be so uniform it was likely due to twisting but that is just a guess at best. Have you modded anything in the suspension?

Tempered glass can be funny like that...
If it had an impact sometime prior to this, it might not have broken (visibly anyway) but then the next small vibration/hit/etc would cause it to shatter since the tempered part was ready to give in. |
Did you have anything stuck on the inside of the window via a suction cup? I know someone who had a small flag on via a suction up, and some how that with the use of the rear defroster weakened that spot, and eventually made the glass implode.

Do you have subs? :o:o

So I had it repaired. Total cost was $500 + tax (well $0 to me thanks to insurance). The glass place said they had more than usual lately so maybe it's weather related.

I'll be honest, looks pretty bad ass like you were in a car chase.

It could have been the pressure of shutting the door so quickly. I believe the whole point of the windows retracting and going up is to prevent that quick build up of pressure in the car.

a localized gravitational abberation led to Non-linear catastrophic structural exasperation of the amorphous structure.
a.k.a. "It Blowed up" I once kicked a tempered glass tabletop and it didnt break (right away). But it started emitting a very high pitched squeal for about 10 seconds then exploded. Cool but messy & expensive... |

Hit tempered glass from the side/edges (where it's weakest) and it shatter! Read this: [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneous_glass_breakage"]Spontaneous glass breakage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] |

A (to the best of my memory) direct quote from the Sales manager at Mitsu when I was in the middle of a dispute with them. |

so i spent the past 3 hours vacuuming glass from every crevice of this car. had a bunch of glass inside the sheetmetal under the rear deck that was impossible to access.
Anyways, I noticed that there are vents in the rear trunk area that lead to the bumper. they were as clean as a whistle, so I think those being clogged up rules that out as a possible cause for the broken window (assuming the pressure of the doors could shatter a rear window). |
