Ghetto two-seater mod
1 Attachment(s)
I'll probably get flamed for this, oh well. :)
Maybe someone will have a better idea... I like small well handling two-seater cars. That's what I've driven most of my life. So when I got the FRS, the first thing I did is put the back seat down. I considered a seat delete kit. But they are expensive. Just leaving the seat down leaves a flat, carpeted surface. Perfect. The problem with having the seat down is anything in the trunk is visible. So I fabricated a simple panel to block the back like the seat does when it's up. I made a prototype out of cardboard, painted black. It works fine. The plan is to re-create it in plywood, covered in automotive carpet or something similar. Ideally it will be two pieces with a hinge. so I can swing it up from the bottom to get into the trunk from the car. |
Why not just fiberglass a piece?
That looks like shit. lmao |
Of course it looks like shit. It's a piece of cardboard.
|
Why bother? It's one thing to do a rear seat delete, but to just fold down the seats and fabricate a piece to make it look like a two seater? I don't get it. Is it THAT terrible to look at the tiny rear seats?
|
i dont think folding down the rear seat counts as "rear seat delete"...

Where does it say I want it to look like a two-seater? Seat deletes are smooth and uneven. A folded seat is flat and carpeted. Is it THAT terrible that I'm willing to spend a couple dollars? Yes it is. |

:( Christ. I'm an idiot. I guess I'm more tired than I thought.
 |
lol

Better to just get rid of the seat all together if you want to have a "2 seater"... #BecauseWeightReduction
|
I think the point is that he want's a flat carpeted "shelf" in the back instead of a bumpy seat or uneven sheet metal seat pan. When the seat is folded down it gives him that, but then all his trunk stuff is visible.

Maybe if it wasn't cardboard or plywood. I agree with Fiberglass

Not really a new idea. A couple of us from New England have made them. I removed mine as it was more of a concept using body filler to get rounded edges. I'm going to make a nice one out of plywood using proper fillers and have it clad in leather and alcantara with red stitching. It probably won't be much lighter but will give it a two seater look.

Why buy a 30K new car to stick cardboard into it...truly, we are now a honduh community
|
OMG, guys, he's just doing a mockup with the cardboard. Cut him some slack FFS.
|
Group buy?

Man the moonshine I had last night at friend's party was awesome.

Amazing. A piece of cardboard between the passenger and driver seat would be the ultimate privacy.
|
These post always go the same way. Most of the board lacks reading comprehension (ooh pretty pictures!) and completely disregard that the photo is just a mock-up.
To the OP. Some of the seat delete kits actually do what you're looking at. Would be simple enough to recreate in plywood, and cover in carpet. There's mounting points at the bottom of the seats that can be used, plus the two bolts at the front of the seats as well. I opted for one of the kits personally, as I don't have a place to do this kind of work anymore, but there's a couple of threads on here about doing it. |

1 - You don't know shit about me; and 2 - You made assumptions based on that lack of knowledge. The cardboard was in my car for a couple days. And up until I created this thread, no one else on the planet had seen it. |

I've been going to IKEA a lot lately. So I have a shit ton of cardboard.
I'll be selling custom seat deletes starting at $9.95+ sh+ your first born (don't ask, it's for my side business) for the first 5 orders. If you don't get in on the group buy, msrp is going to be 7 easy payments of $29.95. Mods: don't worry, I'll contact about becoming a vendor before I sell any. |
My bad. I should have known big words like prototype would be over the heads of most people around here.

Well folks do have a sense of humor, I'll give you that.
Just not when it comes to photos of cardboard. :bonk: lol |
OP lives in a trailer park for sure.

@llawd I like the CONCEPT/PROTOTYPE (for other forum members who missed that in the OP).
What would be even better is if it is thin enough to stay in place when the back seat is up, but given the way the back seats release from the trunk that might be difficult. I would love to be able to do this when carrying Luna (our Newfoundland) around in my car. She curls up great on top of the seat when its down but "slides" into the trunk so she has to ride more uncomfortably with the seat up. I may have to break out the cardboard and figure this out myself. |

A hard wall however, would prevent the junk-in-yo-trunk missile hazards in a hard braking event or, God forbid, a frontal collision. ;) |

@Dadhawk
I think you could fit a 'permanent' removable wall with the seats still in place, as behind the seats is just styrofoam and the trunk mat. With a bit of trimming, could have a piece coming out from 'under' the seat, and mounts to the same U bolt that the seats connect to. The issue there would be how to remove it easily when you need the seats down for cargo purposes. You might be able to 'slot' it on the bottom, and use velcro as @Ultramaroon suggested on top. That way it would support something hitting it (a la Luna) and still easily removable. Pretty sure there's a lip on the styrofoam to support that. I don't recall offhand if the trunk mat and styrofoam end at the same point however. Might still require trimming of the trunk mat just get the divider to fit. I haven't had back seats installed in some time, so I don't recall how much space there is between the seat and the trunk area. I have a bunch of photos sans back seat, but I don't seem to have one in that particular area. I will be taking out my rear seat delete to modify a couple things on it, so I'll try to snap a couple photos then so you can see how that area looks. |

Looks like a little more CAD (cardboard aided design) would be needed before a final prototype! |
CF layup is easy, just time consuming and expensive on the equipment side. You could probably get away without even making a mold for the upper, just laminate a core with some room temp wet-preg and pull vacuum over it.
|
Hey hope this helps without all the BS everybody has to add in. Quick link will give you a cheap rear seat delete kit ( http://rearseatdelete.com/FRS-BRZ.html ) , I tried pricing materials and by the time you make it look pretty and right you will spend more trust me or close to it, so save yourself they gray hair and wait for a package.
