Why is ft86club called ft86?

I have been here since even before I got my FR-S. And I just started wondering wondering why the forum is called ft86? Is it because the FT-1 was announced around the same time? Or am I missing something big. Or was it just what they thought the gt86 would be called?:iono:

donutfilling 03-14-2015 07:38 PM

One of the first concept cars was named the ft86 which got renamed a few times until it is now the 86. The forum was created back then.

I thought FT-1 was announced in Jan 2014. AFAIK FT is for Future Toyota and the FT86 was the concept car that GT86/FR-S/BRZ were based off.

Veloist 03-14-2015 07:47 PM

The very first FT-86 Concept car was revealed late 2009 and the Scion FR-S concept was revealed in April 2011. The "86" and "GT86" names were official on November 29, 2011 when Toyota did a press-style release and the FR-S was official on November 30, 2011 during their public revealing.

So, this forum originated when FT-86 was the only name we knew the car by.

Edit: Yes, FT stands for "Future Toyota" and 86 referred to the AE86, so Toyota had in mind an AE86 successor from the start.

This is how it goes : Toyota 86 in Asia, South Africa, South America and Australia; GT86 in Europe; both of the preceding names in New Zealand; FT86 in Jamaica.

Your welcome.

apelpapa 03-14-2015 08:15 PM

Interesting. Thanks guys!

There's an FT86 badge? This is news to me.

ToyotaJamaica.com FT-86

BTW, here is the hideous original FT-86 concept:

http://media.caranddriver.com/images...-s-986x603.jpg

http://media.caranddriver.com/images...-s-986x603.jpg

Then Toyota pulled their collective heads from their asses and revealed the FT-86 Concept II, which was much better and pretty close to what we eventually got:

http://media.caranddriver.com/images...-s-986x603.jpg

http://media.caranddriver.com/images...-s-986x603.jpg

Looking at that first concept shows you exactly how close we came to getting just another bland Japanese econobox body design.

It is. That first link takes you to the Toyota Jamaica page for the FT-86.

The rest of the photos were just showing the OP (and anyone else who is interested) where the "Future Toyota" part started and how it progressed to what we have now.

chaoskaze 03-14-2015 10:36 PM

Future Toyota 86

I'm looking at the pictures of the Jamaica FT86. They don't have a badge on the trunk. Unlike the GT86 or FR-S.

acro 03-15-2015 01:19 AM

Yup no badge but it's called the ft86 in Jamaica

YES!!!! Finally day have come that, someone asked this question. This is why, I begged Hachi to not change the forum name!!! Just to see this day.

Anyways, I think, nice members have answered the question, but jic MkI, Mk1.5 & MkII was called FT-86 Concept. This is one of the reasons why FT86SpeedFactory have that name too ;)

That's funny because most of the OG 2009/10 members liked the monkey ass red concept the best.

I'll be honest, I did for one... Back then, this design was fairly unique and totally futuristic looking. Now, we see these designs as hybrids/electrics lol.

I obviously grew to love the Concept II more after its debut.

Toy should of seen when Scion brought FR-S Concept to NYIAS. That day, this forum couldn't handle so many ppl pushing F5, we killed it lmao

Yep. Found the link to the old poll thread. MKIII killed it with monkey butt coming in second and MK II last, lol.

I spend quiet time reading old posts/threads and always wonder why they left?
Any guess?

DaJo 03-15-2015 07:16 PM

Yess, in the end MK3 was definitely the selling concept IMO. But we all knew it looked wayyyy too expensive for production...

There are several reasons.
1. It was just a hype. Every gearhead was talking bout it. Had to get in on it... but now, it's not exciting than other cars
2. Didn't meet their wish. It doesn't come with turbo? Goodbye! It's not AWD Turbo car? Goodbye! It has subaru boxer engine & not new 4AG engine? Goodbye!
3. Hate waiting. There were several years of dark age (bout 1~1.5yrs) not getting any solid info vs other car with actual info. Mind as well buy those cars instead of waiting on no solid info, not sure Toyota even making car.
4. IRL. Life get in the way. New baby on the way. Bought the house. Bought new car. Etc
5. Banned. Being idiot & got banned.

These sums up why oldies left

phobos512 03-16-2015 02:43 PM

I wasn't on the forum at the time but I had a few different configurations built in Gran Turismo 5 back in the day. :)

doctor86 03-16-2015 05:28 PM

I liked the G Sport concept the most...

A lot of ppl said Mk1.5 looked like Rx8. MkI issue was, it looked like FWD (Tada-san claims), MkII made it better & MkIII everyone was in love with lol

meWant 03-16-2015 09:09 PM

Wow i think I was only browsing the forums at the time the poll was up and had not registered.

illest86 03-16-2015 09:21 PM

They probably decided to keep most of those aggressive curves from the FT-86II for the FT-1.

The taillights certainly disappeared. I'm not complaining though, as far as I'm concerned, great booties all the way through design stages and through to the production model.

Their logic is that probably take larger design risks or departures for a car with limited production numbers I guess...

I'm #4; bought a house first (just HAD to be responsible!) and my pay hasn't jumped as much as I had hoped afterwards. I lurk EVERY day though, mostly in Random Pictures for a good laugh while at work.

Desperately trying to find a way to fit a new twin into my budget though. I'm digging that oceanic color for the MY16.

Pretty sure I voted mk1 on the poll, to stay on topic.

Devante 06-25-2015 03:47 PM

Well might as well ask...

Why do they call them 'twins'?

Is it because there's a BRZ and an FRS?

BRZZZZZZZZZZ 06-25-2015 05:01 PM

I remember seeing the original concept at the Goodwood Festival of speed back in 2010. I said "Fuck this car" and am known around the local forums as "Fuck this car" guy whenever anyone ever posts about them, yet somehow I ended up with one.
