waiting for order

So I ordered a red BRZ Limited automatic from a local dealer. At first I was told it would take six weeks, but now they're saying it won't come until August. WTF! Is it normal to have to wait this long? Not sure what is causing the delay: the color, the automatic, or the subwoofer option. Anyone have a similar experience?

tyrantcf 03-09-2015 03:04 PM

The wait time is usually longer when ordering in March through like May. I think it's because they're switching from 2015 MY to 2016, but that's just speculation.

x1UP 03-09-2015 03:22 PM

It honestly shouldn't take that long at all. Does your dealer have a VON number for you? At least that. Otherwise, it seems a little shady...

chaoskaze 03-09-2015 05:31 PM

Maybe you will end up getting a 2016? The rear speaker might be a bit better... haha

The Long Beach port slowdown really screwed up things being shipped from Japan.

Have your dealership find and trade for a BRZ with your specs.

OR

Unless you are getting a killer deal with this dealership, go to another dealership to get one that you want.

OR

@HeubergerMotors can track one down for you and ship it to you

Lots of options if you can't wait till August...

They told me I would have to wait 3 months but I got mines in a week.

CFC BRZ 03-11-2015 08:39 AM

Long time lurker and finally registered due to this thread.
I have the same issue as the OP.

I ordered my 2015 WRB Limited in mid January with no additional options. Pretty standard right? I was told 8-10 weeks, 15 max.
I received a text from the dealer the other week telling me I won't see it until mid June. When I inquired about the delay the only response I got was "hey you'll get your sportscar for the summer". Lame.

I contacted Subaru's national customer service and the representative couldn't answer me either. She was, however, nice enough to start a case for me and will look into the delay. I'll pass on any info that I come across.

Other than that, hi everyone! Nice to meet you.

Even back in 2012 a lot of people were seeing orders coming in at weird intervals, some ordered later but coming in faster. The speculation was that it was due to colors and trims likely being produced in batches based on demand, red auto BRZ might be a trim shipped not long ago so its next date of manufacture is a month or two farther out than anticipated. Again, that's just a guess, if @CFC BRZ hears back I'm curious.

carma143 03-11-2015 12:04 PM

I have a friend whose dining room window looks over the Long Beach port. Man, was it a mess. Shipment boats stuck for weeks, only with no where to go. Lasted almost 2 months I believe.

Using math, 6 weeks for original wait + 2month delay should only force you to wait till about June. Maybe this has to do with the 10:1(?) ratio of FRS/BRZ standardized in the agreement between Subaru and Toyota.

Ordering for 15's in New England opened in the 3rd week of October, and I've only seen a few (6-10) trickle in on the SNE (Subaru of New England) website since. A WRB LMT 6MT just fell off the list for cityside subaru in MA, but there's 2 BRZ's "in transit" now, and series blue that look like it's landed.

Top tip: don't fill in teh zip code popup and you'll see all BRZ's in New England and not just at your local dealers:

update

Update: now they are saying June. A little bit better.

They gave me the VON number. Is there a website or something where I can use the VON# to check the status?

Thanks all!

June is still so long I would cry

BRZ owner here with just a simple question: why not just get an FRS? it's essentially the same car, and there are loads of them sitting around. you can even get a really good lease on them, like $239, which is $100 cheaper than a BRZ lease.

what is so much better about a BRZ?

Djmikec 03-12-2015 02:19 PM

to be honest, that is a good question. on the one hand, the options i am choosing for my BRZ (limited) make it equivalent to a scion monogram series, which i think partially offsets the issues of rarity and expense. (i could be wrong though.)

also, at this point i've jumped thru so many hoops and had so much back-and-forth with different dealers that i'm now ok with just sitting back, enjoying the anticipation, and getting ready for my kickass car to arrive whenever it arrives.

this morning i saw a red Infiniti coupe driving along. "hey," i thought to myself, "that car is pretty hot. almost as hot as my new car will be..."

:D

There are many factors at play here, not all of these may be applicable to why your cars are late in delivery, but as an importer, I hope this gives some perspective on the mess we are dealing with:

1. Lunar new year holiday shut down many ports in Asia for a week so there was heavy congestion the weeks before to push material out before the ports closed, and a rush to get back logged shipments out after they re opened.

2. Some ships don't get a full load at one port, so it may start in China to pick up some containers, drop by Korea to pick up some Galaxy Notes, then to Japan to fill up on cars before coming to USA. That means multiple port congestion. Even if the cars don't move on the same ship, you still have a ship in line to be loaded before it heads out.

3. 10:1 rule, Subaru only gets 1 BRZ out for every 10 FRS/86 that go out. I don't know the details of this agreement but if Toyota is slow to move their car due to slow sales, port congestion, etc., it seems logical that the BRZ delivery would slow exponentially.

4. Strikes at US ports have crippled our ability to import. Ships are just parked at port waiting to be unloaded. Strikes combined with a rush from Asia following the lunar new year back log of shipments is just worsening the wait. Products should be at their home port for about a week before being loaded, 3 weeks on the water, then another week at US customs. 5 weeks door to door. I'm quoting 12 weeks to customers and I'm sure there are more checks for cars to confirm correct VIN, emissions, licensing, etc.

In my opinion, I would say don't put money down until you see a car on the lot. If you are willing to wait, great. If you want it now, get a 2014 because there is no difference.

whoa, 10:1? i did not know that. that explains why there is not even a showroom brz at the dealer in town, while next door at the toyota dealership there are four frs's.

I don't understand why you guys in the USA are having so much trouble. I have a friend who put down a deposit on a BRZ in Late February, and the dealer got it to them within 7-10 days. My BRZ was a matter of 3-5 days.

Are these cars in that much more demand in the US?

zc06_kisstherain 03-12-2015 04:35 PM

OP, if you cannot wait then search stocked car at some other dealer. i waited mine for 5 months back in 2012

Djmikec 03-12-2015 06:31 PM

yeah, other local dealers have blue/black/gray/white in stock, but for some reason i really want red.

I love the front end of the FR-S better than the mustache on the BRZ, but I wouldn't even consider buying a FR-S. The BRZ is a much better bang for the buck. Pure Price kills the FR-S. You can get a BRZ limited for the price a base FR-S. Lot more content in the BRZ limited.

If the dealer is getting cars in 10 days or less, they're pulling the cars from existing local dealer lots. The problem that happened here is that there's nothing in existing stock in the USA for certain color and transmission combos. The OP is looking for a red auto limited, so there's probably none in the local area. Getting it built and shipped form Japan takes awhile...

It's not a demand issue, it's a supply issue.

Yeah, I always wanted a red car, and that's how I got in my current ride.. so I can understand that. The twins look great in red imho.

I've noticed the same thing. Not many red twins out on the lots.
