sounds like u put the clutch in as it over-revved.

personally I think it should be fine

thanks for the reply, from looking at the video that's what I thought too.

However something crossed my mind - what if it did overrev but the tacho couldn't jump quick enough to ? I.e. It was actually in the 9k+ rpm but tacho showed 7.5k - 8k. Is this possible?

Freetime 03-09-2015 08:31 AM

Maybe if you put your phone down and just drove the car, you would be able to pay attention and not dumb stuff like throw it in first?

I was doing it for a reason, obviously

Tcoat 03-09-2015 08:46 AM

Don't sweat it. If you broke something you would know for sure by now. Just don't keep doing it.

There is a reason that is called a "Money Shift".

The really bad news is that IF you have an engine problem because of that, the dealer will know what you did and will deny the warranty work.
High revs like that are recorded in the black box.

rip

acro 03-09-2015 10:45 AM

If it's still on its likely fine. Just don't do it again

1) Nobody who is a mechanic has chimed in yet, but I doubt you did more than over-rev for a fraction of a second. Doubt there was any major damage as the revs immediately came down.

2) get a mountable camera, keep your hands free, and drive carefully from now on.

tennisfreak 03-09-2015 10:54 AM

Well posting that video sure will make it easy for the dealer to know just exactly how you f'cked your engine! :)

99% chance that you're fine. Mechanic/engine builder.

continuecrushing 03-09-2015 11:56 AM

you're good...just don't make a habit out of it

wparsons 03-09-2015 12:04 PM

Damage from over revving is usually caused by floating a valve and having it make contact with a piston. You'd know pretty much immediately if you had done that.

Usually there's a ka-boom and smoke and some other fun sounds, like a party in your engine bay!

Ya there is usually little room for doubt when you take out an engine on over rev!

Most over rev damage I've seen didn't blow up entirely, but it did run like crap after with a damaged piston/valve. No holes in the block or anything. If you really over rev it then it can get much worse.

In any case, you'd know immediately.

RobertPaulson 03-09-2015 01:57 PM

is anyone else surprised he got it from 2nd into 1st? My car won't let me get past the gate once i'm doing more than 10mph.

Yes. I don't think my car would have let me select first at that speed/rpm even if I was intentionally trying to.

Chimera 03-09-2015 02:28 PM

I am able to get mine into 1st at about 25~30 mph. I usually don't but I have when anticipating accelerating immediately after braking at a red light.. which is bad behavior incidentally.. but yea, mine will let me into first even at some higher speeds. haven't tried anywhere above 30 that I can recall.
Related to orig post, I accidentally did the similar once going from 6 to 3rd instead of 5th.. oops. but its been along time now and nothing bads happened.

Add3r 03-09-2015 02:40 PM

+1 to just about everything said in the thread so far. No, since clearly I have to clarify lol, I am not a mechanic.

To me, it looks like you hit rev limit before any damage was done anyway. Did the throttle cut pretty hard? Looks like just locked up to save the engine from incidents like this. Admittedly I have hit the throttle limit like that in the past, once. It is definitely enough to make your stomach drop when it happens the first time.

fantah 03-09-2015 02:49 PM

Nice hahahaha. You're fine, it's not hurt, just your feelings lol.

25/30 is like 2500/3000 rpm in second gear, just need to ride out that torque dip to the money.

I can downshift from 2nd to 1st more easily if I rev match which is rather difficult considering how high in the rpms I have to catch it

The rev limit does nothing for you when you miss a shift like that.
You can hear the rear tires lighting up when he misses.
It is not clear in the video what RPM the engine gets too because the view is partially blocked AND the tach will not respond that quickly.
He definitely got to 8k, but the black box might say higher.

Good thing he didnt have wide, sticky tires or it would have gone BOOM!

Freedom 03-10-2015 06:37 AM

You should have a look at tightening the linkage and play in your gear lever if you have a lot of it. I got mine replaced under warranty. Not sure how you got it in 1st from 2nd :party0030:

Grip Ronin 03-10-2015 09:51 AM

Last year i over revved my GSR, i went 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th. My shift rpm is 9500.i think it went to about 14k lol i bent 12 out of 16 valves, cracked 1 piston and broke my pressure plates rivets but i still made it home. Not to make you nervous your probably fine. That was a 400 whp turbo car

tonychet2 03-10-2015 11:56 PM

thanks everyone for your inputs :) car is still fine
@stugray yeah the tires weren't gripping is that good?
