postponed: Saturday Morning Gorge Scenic Drive

So I'm itching for a nice drive! I know @Jonesy86 just posted his Lyle to Goldendale route, but I've been thinking of doing this gorge drive for some time now. Was simply waiting for some good weather.

Here's a google map of my intended route:

http://goo.gl/maps/Tx0ln

It includes the Lyle to Goldendale route, but also tacks on a pit stop at the Stonehenge Memorial, another pit stop at the Rowena Crest Viewpoint via the Rowena Loops, and then finally topping the trip off with a stop at the Vista House at Crown Point via a short trip on the Old Columbia River Hwy.

Edit: postponing this since nobody wants to go. I'll do this by myself on a weekday.

Chen 03-03-2015 12:05 PM

Damn... I would be down it wasn't so early.

asphaltfrs2014 03-03-2015 12:48 PM

I'll be in Seattle for that car show. Sorry bro

The intended start time is to leave Cascade Station by 6:00AM catching the sunrise cast over majestic Mt.Hood while heading east on hwy 14 on the WA side. Hopefully knock out this whole trip in 5-6 hours and be home by noon.

I will be doing this drive even without others. :)

I'm potentially down :burnrubber:

Early bird gets the worm. All of Portland will be out in the gorge that day. Gotta beat the traffic.

Tommysfrs 03-03-2015 10:07 PM

Right now it's a maybe for me, sounds like great fun, I'll let you know Friday night if I'm going or not for sure

Chen 03-04-2015 12:36 AM

I probably won't attending. As much as I hate saying so.

Thatruth2001 03-04-2015 01:21 AM

geezer86 03-04-2015 02:21 AM

I live on he Rowena Loops road tore it up this morning, Mosier to The Dalles (thud) and back.
Not a car or bike to be seen.
Count on a shitload of bikes Crest to Mosier at that time of day Sat.
Might see you out there.

Our cars should handle fairly similarly, only main difference is your strut bars in front and back. (and my stockish wheels shhhh) but lowered on sportlines.

Let me know if you end up working, if you buy us coffee we can drive together:burnrubber:

Lol I see you've looked at my build thread.

m.box.design 03-04-2015 04:09 PM

Frankly I want to beat most of the weekend traffic. Plus you get to see a great sunrise in the gorge. :)

Of course haha, I didn't want to offer to drive my car if yours was SC or Turbo'd. That's no fun haha

Jonesy86 03-04-2015 09:45 PM

I did most of this drive today, it's a lot of fun! There is a road right down from the stonehenge that looked amazing! I found it, but it was closed to motor vehicles :( This said road is owned by merryhill museum and can be rented out. I will look into renting it (if possible) for a possible hill climb day. Fingers crossed!

Noice!

It's this road that Ryan Tuerck ripped on:

@ indesign Is that the merryhill museum road?!

Goz 03-04-2015 11:21 PM

That definitely would be a sweet road to drive and snap shots on!

geezer86 03-04-2015 11:50 PM

I think it's a $1000 or $1200 a day.
12 cars a hunner dollars each!
I'd be in for that.

That makes two of us. I will make a thread tomorrow. Let's do this!

m.box.design 03-05-2015 01:10 AM

I saw a motorcycle forum thread about renting it. Supposedly you need a $1mil insurance per person and fire - ambulance

I will still reach out to them. Sorry about the:threadjacked:

Aztec 03-06-2015 07:46 PM

Bumpity bump, who all do we have going tomorrow on this cruise? If @Chen you don't feel it, I may be driving with a co-worker.

Anyone else planning on this?

m.box.design 03-06-2015 07:54 PM

There's an owner from Hood River who will meet us at the Hood River bridge.

Thanks for the reminder. But I won't be attending. I got to be at work.

Tommysfrs 03-06-2015 10:21 PM

I can't make it, looks like it'll be fun

m.box.design 03-07-2015 02:01 AM

If you want to go, speak now or hold your peace, so I know if I need to hit up cascade station.
@Aztec

sachu 03-07-2015 02:26 AM

On the fence on this one. I want to go but wish it wasn't this early or as long a route.

Will likely end up going dirt biking instead tomorrow.

If any of you want to do a scapoose vernonia run on Sunday let me know.

m.box.design 03-07-2015 02:49 AM

Im gonna post pone this til another time. I really just don't want to drive on congested roads. I will save this drive for a peaceful weekday.

If its a Wednesday or Thursday I should be able to make it. Thusdays are best.

geezer86 03-08-2015 11:12 AM

Good thing you didn't do it on Sat. I drove to TheDalles from Mosier and got stuck behind a slow moving vehicle, something called a Corvette. Looked fast but slooooow.
Had to bail and get on the freeway. The weekends bring out the Sunday drivers oh yeah cyclists too.
Mid week is the way to go.

I saw a Gorge sunrise driving to ORP for a track day last year. Well worth getting up early for the run, incredible light and shadows on a clear day.

When you go to Maryhill Museum, you'll get a pass to Maryhill Winery (International Winery of the Year 2014) down the road and a comp flight of wine tasting, about 9-10 samples per adult.

Maryhill Loops has sanctioned hillclimb events in September but you can walk or bicycle past the locked gate anytime.
