Great driving roads across America?
 

Planning on a road trip from South Florida to South California in my BRZ, what are some scenic routes with twist and turns alone the way? (I am inclined to go up to Colorado from TX then cross Nevada to SF then LA for now)

Does anybody know some great roads during the route? PCH is the only one I really want to visit so far, but I am sure there will be some other great fun roads alone the way.

Also, road trip tips will be appreciated. :thumbup:

If you take the straight line route, you aren't going to hit a lot of great roads until maybe the Rockies. If you take a detour north through GA/TN you could hit the Tail of the Dragon and some great scenic routes there.

Alabama
 

If you are coming through Alabama you should come up to Birmingham Saturday for a cars and coffee. Lots of fun and we normally get a good number of BRZ/FRS/GT86 up there. From there there are some nice roads around. It might be a little icy right now so I don't know about tomorrow.

Three Sisters or Twisted Sisters near San Antonio is a good spot in Texas.

There are some great roads in Colorado and Utah, been through both, mostly Utah on my motorcycle. 5 national parks in Utah too.

Yep Three Sisters and hill country north of San Antonio is good overall. Moderate speed limits and very low on cops.

You will not be disappointed if you hit up as many of these parks as possible (Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Grand Canyon, Capitol Reef, Zion, Meteor Crater, Monument Valley). If that's your thing but if you're passing through why not? Also Highway 163 to Monument Valley, the Forrest Gump road if you will.

Not too long ago I was in northern New Mexico wishing I had my BRZ. I drove a shitty rental car from Santa Fe to Los Alamos and then over to Valles Caldera, looped back south near the Bandelier National Monument to White Rock. At that point I still had time in my day, so I said what the hell and drove up the Rio Grande to Espanola, then all the way up through the Rio Grande canyon to Taos.

The canyon and mountain roads just beg for a sports car, and the scenery is simply stunning. There were times when it was hard to get my head around the scale of what I was seeing. I had more than one "reveal" where I would come around a turn or over a ridge, see what was in front of me and say, "Holy shit!"

That's right along your way. You could easily take a right before you get to Albuquerque and make a lazy loop up into Colorado and back through Utah. One of these summers I'm going to drive back out there with the BRZ and do exactly that.

I don't think I would do it in the winter, though. That's all up around 7000 feet and might be a little treacherous. When is your trip?

Arizona 191

The best road in Northern California is Wentworth Springs Road:

I've been on pretty much all the "driving" roads in Norcal and this is by far the most worth going out of your way to drive on.

Highway 36 is also really interesting, but thats a looong road with a few very interesting (very different) sections.

There are a lot of "tourist" driving roads here, like Highway 1 and 49, but they are too busy and less interesting as roads themselves.

Really pretty, too.

CA Hwy. 1 between Monterey and Santa Barbara. Get on it early because of 1. traffic caused by people looking at the scenery instead of driving, 2. most drivers are scared of the undulation and the curves, 3. scary at night unless you know the road (people want to watch the sun set and then get going not realizing that a dark road going up/down/left/right can get frightful).

Highway 89a Arizona, I don't know how but Japanese 86 app have that road as one of their recommend touge. You can even check-in in their app.

If you decide on doing the "Twisted Sisters" in Texas ... let us know in the San Antonio Meet Thread under the Southwest Region Forum. Pretty sure some San Antonio and Austin 86ers would be glad to join up with you when you get here!! When we go out there we usually meet up at the Apple Store in Medina, TX around 9AM and then after the run have lunch at the Bent Rim Grill in Leakey, TX.

White Mountains in New Hampshire (I know you arent even going to be close, but its beautiful out here). Amazing in the fall.

It's a loop from Vegas to Arizona, and up through Utah, checking out 5 different national parks based on the grand canyon. I know you aren't doing a loop, but maybe you can use it as an idea for when you get to the Southwest region, or when you leave Colorado
