I've always wanted a beater... Best $400 I've ever spent
1 Attachment(s)
I've been eyeing this car parked in a driveway near home for a few months now, and finally decided to show some interest. It's a 1985 Porsche 944 NA. He was asking $3250, and somehow I got him down to $400. It runs GREAT and only needed a new battery! Handles very well and is fairly powerful given the age (very similar to a stock FRS). Easily the best $400 I've ever spent.

Well that may be a low-balling record.
|
Dude, you stole that! Noice!
|
Damn you! I was just going to post my 944 I bought this weekend! I dare say you got the better deal!
 |

Check local papers to confirm that it wasn't used in a recent robbery or homicide.
But on the serious, that's an epic transaction. |
Another great find! Is it 944 week or something at the forums?
It always help if you see an older car on a driveway to go up to the owner and ask if it's for sale. I always find that the best deals are met that way... |

Are you seriously not going to tell us how you got from $3250 to $400?! My money is on you either giving the best hanjo in the state, or persuading him in true mafioso fashion. So which was it?
...Also, congrats on the new ride. |
Great job getting the price down! You two almost make me want to buy another coolant and oil leaking german car! ;)

Post some pictures in this thread when you have a chance, I'd like to see them! Any plans for your 944 or are you keeping it stock? |

I thought we agreed to keep that between us? C'mon man! ;) |
What's your secret to negotiating?
|
Just be glad it wasn't a 928 from southern Argentina.

Before making my initial offer, I asked the seller how much he NEEDS to get for the vehicle. I had already given him some time to absorb the fact that I probably wouldn't be willing to pay his asking price, and he hit me at $2k. I told him that although I respect why he's asking that amount, the way it sits the car is a couple hundred bucks to me. I offered $200, he countered at $800, and I offered to meet him at $350. He said no, he could scrap it for $700 (which he really could). I told him I would hate to walk away over a couple hundred bucks, and more than that would hate to see a car he's held onto for so long go to a scrapyard - this made it personal. Is it worth a couple hundred bucks for him to waste the car with all his memories? I told him I could offer him $400 and take the car same day, but that I couldn't go any higher as I'm afraid of costs I may incur if any failure occur. He hesitated for a minute, then shook my hand and the deal was done. It won't always work out this way, but in this case it did. For anybody who is wondering, I wouldve been willing to pay ~$1200. |

I'll give you $500 for it.

Wait wait wait... So you're THAT GUY who always offers like $27 and a pack of gum whenever I list anything on Craigslist? I always wondered why people do that.. apparently it works sometimes.

No, I'm THAT GUY who noticed a car rotting in a driveway for 8 months and offered to buy it. THAT CAR that happened to not be posted anywhere online. |
Can I hire you to buy my next car for me?

I'd pay you to buy my cars, houses, toys, etc! Shit, do you think you could get my gas/electric/cable bill down a bit, or how about groceries you ever haggle those?
