I'm guessing you either just didn't want any badges or logos. Or you just hate scion as much as I do LOL

swarb 02-16-2015 06:08 PM

pics for proof. does your head unit still say scion? does the start up screen say scion? does your steering wheel say scion? hahaahha

Braces 02-16-2015 06:11 PM

News flash. It's still a Scion.

Lonewolf 02-16-2015 06:11 PM

You could probably sell all that stuff to someone in Japan...apparently it has become a bit of a thing to do the Toyota to Scion conversion over there

Here in Ontario, Canada, the Ministry of Transportation says the Scion FR-S is a Toyota FR-S

It's the same in the U.S.A.

Ouch… Sad truth.

Zanwald 02-16-2015 08:16 PM

You can't remove ALL traces of the Scion brand so I never see the point in this.

I thought about this since I bought my car 2-3 weeks ago.

Then I had tall grandiose ideas of modding and supercharger and more.

Never did see a frs or ride one when I put a deposit on it.

First weekend of driving it I had the widest smile ear to ear.

Modding... lots of thoughts of it.......but having a fun time right now as it sits!

I like toyota. Had toyota celicas in the past. But have no reason to rebadge it. Do members here not like the Scion brand?

JB86'd 02-16-2015 08:51 PM

Thank goodness his next post wasn't a pic of an FRS rebadged as a Ferrari

Apparently in the U.S. (mostly) there is some sort of stigma attached to the Scion name. I find it funny because around here Scion are fairly rare and to rebadge as a Toyota would be considered a down grade as they are everywhere.
The weird part is that you aren't fooling the people that know what the car is and the people that don't know probably just don't care.

lol.. everyday I drive it, people come up to me... hey what is that.
Then they go..." a Scion"...... look of confusion.
I have noticed since I bought my car Scion is having commericials on their Tc model. Never noticed that before. But then again we know how that works...lol...see everything now...

Tcoat 02-16-2015 09:47 PM

Since I got my car in August I have seen 2 Tcs and 5 FRSs total (and one of them was on Markham the FRS capital of Canada) and have never seen any of the other models ever! I get the blank stare as well when I say it is a Scion. I saw the FRS commercial twice and have never seen the Tc one a tall.
Guess that is different elsewhere though.

I've never seen an FR-S commercial or an FR-S in any Scion commercial.

Plot twist.. its always been a Subaru.

For ease and peace of mind this is why I bought a Subaru!

It's true, there is a negative stigma in US. I specifically bought a BRZ just so I wouldn't have to say "Scion" when people asked what kind of car it was.

If memory serves, they entered the market shortly after the original fast and furious and targeted high school kids that wanted to customize their cars but didn't have tons of money. They never made anything particularly cool or remotely fast though, so their reputation suffered. They were thought of as "wannabe street racer" cars when I was in high school. For me, this cheesy ass commercial was all it took to turn me off. This left a bad taste in my mouth that still lingers.

Not hating on the FRS at all, I almost bought one at a great deal but it turned out to be an automatic. Just confirming that from my experience, there is a negative stigma here.

Edit: Yep, Fast and Furious 1 released 2001, Scion founded 2002.

^^ the truth.

I take it back, the one visible scion logo is during HU startup. I just look away and pretend it's not there.

I've removed the scion silkscreen from the HU, and covered up the steering wheel badge for now. (That $800 airbag is hard to pull the trigger on.)

And my registration actually says Toyota Scion. So that's something.

I thought about going BRZ so I wouldn't have to worry about the Scion Stigma, but I just liked the front end on the FR...eh hem...86 too much.

Eh. If I put a sticker on a pack of Thin Mints that said "Grasshoppers", they'd still be Thin Mints. All Scion did was slap some badges on a Toyota/Subaru and call it a day. Hell, even the Scion badges are made by Subaru.

Tcoat explained it pretty well but here in the U.S. Scion, among a large amount of car enthusiasts, has a bad aura around them for the TC, xB, xD and iQ.
NOTE THIS IS NOT MY PERSONAL OPINION:
It's not uncommon for their cars to be known as rice wagons and such because it is geared toward younger owners who like to fart can them, most of this spawns from the TC. Its one of those car companies where if your girlfriend said "Oh my god the TC is so nice!" you'd be like :paddle:. Also the way they market front wheel drive underpowered re badged and bodied toyota corollas as sport cars as cool tuner vehicles strike a hate cord among people i.e creating a poser car that young people are supposed to fall in love with.

On the flipside I doubt the U.S.D.M. would have gotten the FR-S had scion not existed.

:iono: It's fairly common to see them it's just they are hated by a lot of people for some odd reason. Also when I was little Scion had just come out and marketed them as modding cultured cars and such saying aftermarket parts were good which in turn created quite a few ricer vehicles.....

2much 02-16-2015 11:47 PM

who cares? I don't get it. It's the same car whether the badges say scion or toyota.

It has nothing to do with the car, people just don't like the Scion brand in general. This stigma was in place a decade before the FRS ever existed. It's not going to suddenly dissolve because of one sports car. Especially when said sports car really doesn't stray far from the stereotype to begin with.

Close enough on the airbag cover! In the FRS HU you can't customize the start up screen like the BRZ?

It means that we drive cheap, slow, modder cars. Kind of hard to deny that. They also happen to be ridiculously fun and amazing to look at, so who really cares?

No, unfortunately.

Quentin 02-17-2015 01:19 AM

I like the Scion steering wheel badge. It has a satin finish instead of the chrome finish on the Toyota badges. It looks and feels nice. I'm not a fan of the 86 cover to be honest. It is too obviously covering a badge. The only Subaru steering wheel badges I've liked have said MOMO or STI on them. Aesthetically, I really don't like the Subaru badge. My Imprezas had pink "i" badges on the nose.

$25K is cheap? Accidentally breaking 100 MPH is slow? Ok, if you say so. I consider it the best of all worlds.

It ain't no Scion. That's for sure. DGAF what the badge says. I'll rock it all day long.

Best go kart ever!

I don't think that negative 'stigma' is widely held. Scion makes solid vehicles that are affordable and pretty interesting. And the whole brand is predicated on having a base car that is very modifiable (but admittingly most of the modifications are cosmetic). That was the angle Toyota had with the brand from day 1 (buy our car and you will be able to mod the crap out of it easily because that's what they are designed for). I think a lot of people appreciate that. I know I do.

How did you remove scion silkscreen?

carma143 02-17-2015 04:25 AM

Scions are known to be cheap (lots of plastic), boxy, and unreliable in general. It doesn't help that they try to aim towards the teenager crowd and instead intrest the 65+ crowd because of the cars' boxy frames. If you reaply want a Scion-like car, you might as well go for the Civic. At the very least it's known to be reliable.

if someone doesnt know the difference between an fr-s and a xb or tc than you probably are already aware that there is nothing you can learn from them in the realm of cars
