Static Electricity
Every time I get out of my FRS and touch the door to close it I get a shock from static electricity. Anyone else having this problem?
|
Wait until you get up to 88 mph!

Common for any car in the cold/winter months

Hmmmm, it's really because it's generally drier in the winter months. Maybe it's been drier then usual lately?
|
It happens every time I drive it, day or night. Humidity today 25%, normally runs 10 to 15%.

As stated above, hold onto a metal portion of the car while stepping out.
|
A simple static build up. Just like socks on a carpet! touch the light switch and you get a shock as the static charge is discharged. The action of getting out of the car with cloth seats and your clothes generate the static charge, when you touch the metal door handle you provide the charge with a path to ground and thus experience the shock. Drier air also makes generating the static charge easier.

I've pretty much had weathertech floor mats since day one and there was a period when I get shocked every time I got out of the car. It did that for a few months but now it almost never happens...
|
YES I have this problem. And they are powerful shocks!
|
OK, lets add some fuel to the fire. I get shocked every time I get out of the car, unless I hold onto the metal of the door before I step out and set foot on the ground. If I do this i'm OK, until I walk to the motorhome we're living in, touch the metal door handle on it and get Zapped! All the wile the wife never gets shocked when she gets out. I'm stumped.

This used to happen to me every time I got out of a car when I was stationed in Chicago during the winter.
What you have to do is keep a coin or a key in your pocket. Anytime you have to touch anything metal hold the coin or key and discharge yourself by touching the coin or key to the metal. Another funny thing with that much static electricity is drying clothes. You try to pull a sock out of the drier and the whole load sticks to it. Then pulling the clothes apart makes a light show you wouldn't believe. |

I put a grounding strap on my car last week and it did nothing to help.
BUT! Today I am wearing different shoes and so far no shocks. |
