College Budget Build
1 Attachment(s)
Quick Intro, Sophomore at CSUF. Money for the FRS comes from my Marketing Coordinator job for Re/Max. My first car build was a 1992 Prelude and was recently stolen 6 months ago; which allowed me to upgrade. My goal is to make around 200 at the wheels.
Goals: 1. Keep it a 10/10's car 2. 4th gear should actually pull... 3. Reliability same or better 4. Daily Driver friendly 5. Be different New Setup Attachment 136560 Old Setup http://i60.tinypic.com/fjlsv4.jpg Exterior Mods: Eibach Pro-kit (Local deal): $175 Modellista front lip $250 STI Side Skirts $200 Rear Diffuser and Aprons: Christmas Present White Wrap(Friends shop): $50 Konig 17x8 Runaways (Local Deal): $200 Total: $675 Engine and Transmission Mods: Open Flash Tablet $425 TRD Intake $200 Milltek Exhaust $300 J2 Front pipe $100 Mtec Shift Springs $40 Weir Performance 4.56 Final Drive $1000 with install Total: $2065 Impressions of what I did so far 5/6/16: Honestly I think I'm done. E85 with a 4.56 Final drive is amazing, you honestly feel a pull through all the gears up until 6th. 0-60 time on a good 70 degree night is about 5.8-6 seconds. On the highway 3rd gear pulls up to 77 now instead of 83, but my 4th gear feels like the new 3rd gear if that makes sense. All the gears seem to have a purpose now 1-2nd are torque monsters, 3rd gear gets you to freeway speeds, 4th gear is when you want to pass aggressively, 5th gear is passing passively, 6th gear is overdrive. Shifting is refined with the mtec shift springs. My exhaust note is now perfect, no drone until you go full throttle. The TRD Intake really improved throttle response and felt like it added a few horses in the low-mid range. The ride is comfortable with pro kits. The best part? Nothing I did harmed my cars reliability. Awesome tools I used creating this build: Berk Front Pipe Dyno 5HP and 5TQ all Across the power band - http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php? K&N Filter dyno increase of 2.5-5Hp from 4.5k to redline http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56341 OFT vs Stock Dyno increase of 16hp in the dip and increase of HP from 5.5k to redline http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1437316 |
I'm interested to see what you do, budget builds can be tough to get much out of.
Best of luck to you and keep us posted  Nice looking Prelude by the way.:w00t: |
I miss my prelude, congrats on the FRS.If you ever need anything, Im more than happy to help out. Cannot wait to see this thing progress
|
Nice to see a fellow Titan on the boards. Good luck with the budget build!
|
Nice Bud, college student here as well. If you have experience in marketing you should research affiliate marketing as an additional source of income, it's what is paying for my build :)

Eyeing out a used catless front pipe for the FRS, 2015's aesthetically already have nice exhaust tips, I'm looking for no drone, good look, as well as increased sound at WOT, Dyno Proven of 5HP and 5TQ and shown partially cut the torque dip.
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21351 $120/5= $30/Hp |
Damn, can't beat a good deal!

Used, ~$800 ~25-30whp conservatively. E85 $0 without a flex fuel kit ~20whp |

E85 on a stock FRS shows to make gains of 20hp and 17 torque conservatively speaking based on http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52326 $400/20hp= $20/hp Based on this the header adds another 10-15hp and completely eliminates the dip. $800/15hp = $36.6/hp http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1462311 As my personal preference I'd rather deal with a catless front pipe every now and then for a smog check then the header(being the main cat). E85 is showing to be the best bang for your buck, as long as one takes the necessary early oil changes. E85 along with a catless front pipe and K&N filter should be able to put one in the 185-190hp range conservatively speaking. Hopefully putting the car around the 0-60 mark of 6-6.5 seconds. Is that fast enough for me? Hell yeah it is. This car is a commuters dream, having fun while not breaking the speed limit and I don't plan on changing the driver characteristics of this car, only improving them. Want to pass someone? Drop it to third gear and hear it sing, who needs torque dip when your already at 5k? Not all cars allow one to have that much engagement on the freeway. Don't get me wrong headers do add a lot to this car but they change the car's characteristics in a way that I believe wasn't how the car was supposed to be (Also I'm on a budget). Even running 91 with a catless front pipe and k&n filter with 91 tune one should feel a difference. E85 has shown to decrease mpg by 25% according to http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=650005 With gas prices and ethanol margin being 20% the cons are 5% loss per tank. I'm sure there are a lot more variables including the more recent oil changes due to E85, but this is what's in my college budget and hope to see an improvement in my daily driving antics! OFT (E85) + Front Pipe + K&N Filter conservatively = +23hp 400+160+45= 605/23hp = $26.03/HP OFT+OFH= $995/30hp = $33.16/hp |
Installed J2 FrontPipe and OFT Stage 1
Review - Front pipe, power increased across the band vey minor but still noticeable. Exhaust note is practically the same but louder. OFT, Torque dip is a lot smaller, can now pull in 4th gear, acceleration is increased all across the band, No anemic feeling when 1 gear too high, practically imagine your 4th gear still being your stock third gear pull feeling. |
Just purchased Zeta Inlet hose and Works Filter (Used) for $65
Summary of why I'm buying them - 1. Filter I'm going to have to replace by OEM filter anyway, might as well go with a high flow filter, has been dyno proven to make 2-3 hp, not bad for $60. Intake induction sound is something I do like in my brother's 8th gen civic. Mpg wise it's shown to have a slight increase. Zeta Inlet Hose - Well it come's with the filter might as well spend an extra 15 for extra "Performance". Zeta inlet tube is smooth as a baby's bottom compared to Perrin inlet tube creating less turbulence, honestly think this piece is very negligible hey $60=4hp= $15/HP also with a tune I expect to be making around 6hp, but I'd like to keep my numbers conservative. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...t=56341&page=2 Showing modded snorkel doing not much... |
I have a cosworth filter I can sell you on the cheap it was on the car for 4k miles or so before I went turbo. Hit me up if youre interested. Power gain is not much but throttle response is so much better with inlet tube and filter. Dont waste money on other intake systems
|
A few things happened these past weeks:
1. Bought Works drop in Filter and Zeta Inlet Tube for $65 Sold Inlet tube for $65 = Free Works Drop In filter Free Works Drop In = 3-4Hp for $0 Or I could've went 5-6hp with inlet tube for $65 = $12-13/hp In my eyes the inlet tube although is a nice cheap mod to do felt practically the same as the drop in filter, other than slightly faster throttle response so I sold it... Lol 2. Flashed OFT E85 tune - Review Best way to sum it up is stage 1 Octane Tune multiplied by 2. -The Torque Dip is still there but hard to notice. -Every gear this car pulls. -Exhaust note is quieter -More torque and Hp everywhere -About 20% less mpg - E85 costs $2.83, 91 Oct costs $3.55. 21% Margin so technically profiting 1% in margin (; http://i61.tinypic.com/11l5rpl.jpg |

It takes 1 hour or so with basic tools to change out for SMOG... yes, running costs increase $60 bi-annum or so for new gaskets, but we pay to play, don't we? And how much is a good meal nowadays? keep on mate, nice looking rig for $$ spent so far |

The with similar mods as this guy (Difference being he has a catback and I have catless front pipe) I hope to make 191HP with my $525 spent haha [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1FtKAO_Tv0"]SCION FRS ECUTEK E85 TUNE - YouTube[/ame] Besides the numbers, I really feel this is enough power for me. I've noticed running E85 that my car is lacking driver input on my daily commutes. Its awesome being able to pass people in 6th gear but what makes this car so fun is that its meant to be a 10/10th's car. From the power I gained i'm starting to see less and less driver input, such as dropping to third for passing power without breaking laws. I'm happy that I'm still able to do that with my power gains. Now all I'm really looking for are $200 Power blocks, this way I don't have to rev so high, waste gas at higher rpms, and increase motor longevity because the motor doesn't have work so hard for power. Really like that this mod increases pull in the lower and midrange bands. Either that or I buy another Inlet hose but with a curved tubing hopefully I snatch one for $50. Patience is a virtue when being cheap haha |

$525/25hp = $21hp. Not too bad? Hope something comes out that allows me to keep it at this rate because the only thing I'm seeing is an inlet pipe, and even those unlike the other mods I've done only increase tq/hp in a very small rev range without a header back system. This is according to Perrin http://blog.perrinperformance.com/fr-sbrz-inlet-hose/ |

also refer to Shiv's experiences with power blocks and E85 |

Surprised the red e85 car kept up for so long. Maybe better shifting/launch? Do you know what mods they have?

Attachment 136561
5/4/16 Update: Just installed my 4.56 Final Drive with Mtec Shift Springs: -Shifts springs were noticeable, I would say it made a more refined shifting experience. -4.56 Final Drive, an amazing modification! It does change a lot of the driving, 6th gear is enough to pull through traffic, 4th is brutal and 3rd gear is limited to 77mph with my 7650 redline. You do feel the torque and it makes pressing the throttle a lot more rewarding! -Milltek Exhaust sounds slightly raspy when you get on it, but great and rumbly for light revs. The way i like it. -TRD Intake added the throttle response I was looking for while adding some low-mid range power. |
