Ran over a rock

Yesterday I was driving, and I heard a loud DING in my tire and it sounded as if a rock flew off my wheel and onto the side, I'm hoping it didn't hit under the car and caused something to break. So far I have no idea what damages a rock could cause to my vehicle so I'm not sure if there's anything wrong. And driving it today I didn't sense any problems whatsoever. Going to go under the car tomorrow and check to see if there's any damages.

Is it possible for the rock to just fly off the wheel without getting under my car and damaging something?

Unless it was a boulder (or at least golf ball sized) I would say everything it gonna be fine lol

extrashaky 01-26-2015 11:54 PM

I had that happen, except that it was a big ol' bullfrog that came up out of the swamp on I-10 south of Baton Rouge. It must have been mating season or something, because there were bullfrogs all over the road. Better that than the alligators I see mangled up along there sometimes.

I saw him jumping and couldn't swerve in time. I heard him bounce all down the underside of my car. I was pretty bummed about it, because that frog would have been delicious.

Someone should diagnosed you with Paranoid Schizophrenia.

You should be fine.

Unless it performed the people's elbow, in which case your car may be down for the three count.

These cars are just freaking noisy. Nothing to worry about.

I'm OCD by nature, so for the first few weeks I was checking like crazy for body damage. Eventually I just got bored. Sometimes it sounds like someone's taken a baseball bat to the side of the car. Sometimes the car ahead of me on the freeway will bounce a bit of gravel off my cabin roof. Sounds like a .22 shot. And then nothing. Still clean.

Don't worry about it.

Just for perspective, take some friends for a drive and watch them drag their muddy shoes across the door sill before kicking the speaker cover. F&@k...

When people get in my car there's always this loud sound that their foot hit against the side bottom door panel which makes me think, what the actual hell did you just hit with your foot.

And yeah the speaker thing too. #$O@O#PKD

That's why I don't let many people get in my car anymore.

I'm still going to check tomorrow though just in case

Make sure you post the results first thing after you take a look. We are all concerned and dying to find out. As a matter of fact, I may lose sleep because of this.

How do you know it was a huge rock if you didn't even see it? How do you know it wasn't a frog?

MidnightRunner 01-27-2015 01:35 AM

Lol you gotta be kidding me. Sounds like either this is your first car, or you're one of the many trolls lingering this forum. Trust me, a little rock should be the least of your concerns.

If these car can survive in SA with our roads then you have no issues............

carma143 01-27-2015 03:31 AM

If it was a salt rock your car might be disintegrating at this very moment.

When you hit your toe against something hard at home, do you post on the health forums about possible damage? The car is just plastic, steel and cheap iPhone-grade aluminum.

It makes me question how someone even gets out of bed in the morning, let alone allowed to drive on the road.

Was the rock OK?

Dadhawk 01-27-2015 10:19 AM

To be fair to the OP, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that road debris could damage something under your vehicle (take the last flight of the Concorde for example). Obviously it needs to be a good size, but even a small projectile can cause damage.

I had an armadillo that put a good size dent in a muffler once. (For those that don't know, an armadillo when balled up in the road will sometimes jump up just as you pass over them, hitting the bottom of your car).

As a side note, I had the not-so pleasant experience of running over the remains of a dead animal (a deer I believe but by the time I did it, it was unrecognizable) last week. Didn't see it until the last minute due to the car in front of me, and couldn't avoid it. It scrapped along the bottom of my car and I got to "enjoy" smell cooking deer meat for the ride to the nearest car wash to get an under spray done to get it out.

I don't know how SquadRogue manages to get in and out of a car.

BTW, seems to me Jake Gyllenhaal has really moved up in the acting world! I had no clue he was Bubble Boy.
