Exhaust loudness dropped dramatically?

So I have Borla exhaust and borla UEL headers on my FRS. I've had the exhaust for about 10 months and the headers about a month. It was decently loud after header install and good rumble but now all of a sudden it is like the headers aren't there.... It sounds really quiet barely can hear it while driving, unless in high Rpm's. It sounds similar to when I only had exhaust, little to no rumble. I don't have any loss in power just exhaust loudness? Please help

totalled.

Decay107 01-24-2015 01:47 AM

It's because you've gone deaf.

That is strange though, my experience has been that most exhausts get slightly louder over time.

AZ_Racer_1 01-24-2015 01:47 AM

Wow you are so funny dude....

AZ_Racer_1 01-24-2015 02:07 AM

@Decay107 yeah that's what I thought, that's what happened with my exhaust, then I got the headers and it did the opposite lol

Tcoat 01-24-2015 02:16 AM

Was it a gradual drop or just one day was quieter?
Don't think it can be diagnosed over the internet but you have made me very curious.

Someone stuffed a potato in your tailpipe?

This is what I'm thinking. I can't imagine any other reasons for why a loud, modified exhaust would suddenly get noticeable quieter.

Your neighbors must not like your car very much OP.

EAGLE5 01-24-2015 11:51 AM

Turn the engine on.

BlackMonarch 01-24-2015 11:56 AM

Check for blockage in the pipes. Seriously sounds like someone may have shoved a banana\malleable vegetable in to one of the tail pipes to muffle it.

AZ_Racer_1 01-24-2015 12:12 PM

Really? Stuck something in there? That's messed up haha but alright I'll take my exhaust a part and look through the pipes thanks for the suggestions! I'll let you guys know if I find anything

AZ_Racer_1 01-24-2015 01:08 PM

Oh actually I forgot about 2 weeks ago I got a bad batch of gas that reduced my power and then gradually reduced exhaust but I have refueled and cleaned the engine and fuel lines. The power is back but I'm thinking maybe there is still a little bad gas in there?

FirestormFRS 01-24-2015 03:28 PM

You probably are experiencing hearing loss due to your loud exhaust, or just becoming accustomed to it. Loud isn't loud if you are exposed to it daily.

I mean, it's happened before. it wouldn't get much past the actual muffler\tail pipe section, but I've seen it happen before - Friend of mine in HS had a stupid loud SLP Camaro, and someone managed to wedge an absolute ton of banana's in to his Bowtie-shaped exhaust pipes and it was both very quit, and very messy. Unsure if it actually did any damage.

FRSBRZGT86FAN 01-24-2015 06:10 PM

1) I would check all the clamps, gaskets and the pipes themselves on the exhaust system first maybe have blown something out of there
2) Have someone else listen to your car so if its loud for them or multiple people its probably just sensory adaptation:iono:

AZ_Racer_1 01-24-2015 07:19 PM

I took off the muffler and ran it straight out the stock front pipe needless to say it was stupid loud but it all sounded good (did not remove axleback). So I reinstalled the muffler and it lost all rumble and was very quiet and my buddy said it sounded a lot quieter then it used to as well. My brother said the same thing.

Just lift the car up to and rev the engine around 2500RPM to check for leaking exhaust. I've had my Borla UEL on for a year and it did not lose its loudness at all before I changed to Tomei EL.

An exhaust leak would not make the car more quiet.

I love the part where you end it with "Please help".

My vote is for something stuck in the muffler. If something was stuffed inside you would be able to see it with a flashlight right?

If the exhaust was blocked so much that is makes the car quieter it would be throwing CELs like crazy by now or stopped running completely.
Exhaust has to get out as badly as air needs to get in.

Ashikabi 01-25-2015 10:31 PM

Now I don't know a lot about exhaust but doesn't the muffler have done kind of "packing" inside? Could that have settled or come loose?

Usually that will make it louder. Or if it blocks the flow too much start throwing codes.
Not an impossibility though.

Ashikabi 01-25-2015 10:37 PM

So... magic?

Did you find a solution? I’m experiencing similar issue, and don’t even know where to start

Dude hasn't been here for 6 years so don't hold your breath on an answer. As for where to start this thread already said it. Check for blockages.

I don’t think there are any blockages as I didn’t notice power going down, and you can see all of the fumes going from the exhaust.

I’ve looked inside the exhaust tips with camera and flashlight, and nothing’s there.

It happened next day after tire change, could it affect it in any way? I switched from winter 215/40/18 to summer pilot sport 4 225/40/18

So is it exhaust that is quieter or just less road noise? I know there is a massive change in volume when I go from my winter tires to the summers. That change can mess with your head!

It’s definietly the exhaust that’s quieter. Before, I could hear a really nice and loud engine Noise inside my car when going over 4k rpm. Now there’s barely any noticeable Noise. Also, immediately after changing the tires, I drove the car back to my house and I could definitely hear the engine sound.

Also, I popped the hood, turned on the car (cold start, so 1.5k rpm), and I think the loudness was as always, it’s the sound that I hear inside the car (or with open windows) when driving that sound quieter.
