Drove a BRZ Yesterday ..

Wow, What a hoot!

I really enjoyed driving this car.

I'm in Canada, and I am looking at getting the Base BRZ, Manual Transmission, as opposed to the sport tech.

The Sport tech just adds:

Fog Lights
Spoiler
Push Button Start
Heated Leather (Alcantara) Seats

I would like to add the Spoiler to my base model but can live without the leather and push button start.

Anyway just wanted wanted to say Hi, and confirm that I have no idea what people are talking about with these cars being underpowered. This car will be replacing my other top tier sports car (Viper) and I think I will be just as happy, or even happier on road trips.

Its nice to be able to drive a car to its limits, as opposed to mashing the gas for 3-4 seconds and having to back out because you have doubled or tripled the speed limit.

Enjoy it

Ah, another convert to "slow car fast." :)

If you want the standard spoiler that comes on Limited (or I guess Sport Tech in the Great White North) trims, you can probably find one from a user here for a good price. I will be getting rid of mine for something else at some point. Since you'll have a hole-less trunk, make sure you check aftermarket options too before drilling holes for the stock spoiler.

I have the keyless entry with push button start and didn't think I would care one way or the other. But now that I've been using it for a year, I would order it again in a heartbeat. I can literally lock my house and put my keys in my pocket, then not take them out again until I get home. I can open the car doors and trunk without the key, start the car without the key, lock the car without the key.

You don't realize how annoying it can be to dig out your keys all the time until you never have to do it. That, plus the better look the OEM spoiler gives the rear of the car (so that it doesn't slope off like a dog's ass tucking its tail as it runs away) definitely made the upgrade worth it.

I agree with the above 200%. And the heated leather seats are amazing in the winter time. They warm up so fast sometimes I drive without the heat on and just the seat warmer and that is enough to keep me warm.

Don't rule out the auto climate control either.

THIS - the only thing I miss from my old IS300 versus my current DD.

Heated seats? Meh.

I've never had push button start - will be interesting to try out.

tahdizzle 01-23-2015 03:30 PM

Actually I think the auto climate, dual zone climate control is wasted on a Twin.

Same here but the look of the center console is so much better with it.

I was going to buy a premium because I just don't really care much for the extra features.. I'm glad it sold out from under me. Got a limited and man.. my 15 min breaks to puff on my ecig would not be the same without that hot seat to sit in. The keyless entry has grown on me too. I do kinda miss the feel of turning the ignition though...

I'm on the fence with the spoiler.. considering seeing if someone wants to swap trunks. I think the white brz/tinted windows/no spoiler just looks really clean.

Why? My wife raves over that, and the heated seats.

Personally, I didn't care for the climate control until I had to make a 2 hour drive. Worth it for long trips, to not have to constantly fiddle with knobs.

tahdizzle 01-23-2015 05:07 PM

@MikeM7 I enjoy the seats, but I think the cabin is too small for a dual zone climate control to be affective.

alanhung85 01-23-2015 05:19 PM

I have to agree the spoiler is ugly. Although it does reduce drag by 0.01 but really who cares. The Scion / Toyota / TRD one looks a lot better. I am thinking of removing my stock and replacing it with a TRD one.

tahdizzle 01-23-2015 05:37 PM

What color code? ask for a trunk swap.

ThisIsChrisKim 01-23-2015 06:10 PM

Auto climate is pretty nice--my previous car had it too. It's nice to just turn it on and forget about it.

I'm exactly the opposite. I think the Scion spoilers look goofy and prefer the Subaru spoiler.

Ganthrithor 01-23-2015 07:01 PM

I can't imagine not wanting heated seats in Canada, but on the plus side-- getting a base BRZ means you can stick a 5 axis spoiler on the back without having a bunch of holes in the trunk lid that you'll need to find a way of covering. The 5AD spoiler is still the best looking decklid spoiler I've seen on these cars IMHO.

Agree with what most people sai about the positive of the sport tech (limited).

I'm not sure how pricing is out there, but finding the right dealer/salesman could net you a very good haggle time. Many people have gotten the limited models for nearly (I've even seen the same) as the premium base brzs.

Adding a spoiler ( the factory one) will cost a lot.

Factory spoiler pre-painted is around $550 from the dealer. Not bad for a painted OEM piece.

I am a huge advocate of buying used.. I got my 2013 limited, like new condition, 15k miles, 35% tint, and clear bra on entire front of car for $22,000. I'm guessing the guy spent around 30k out the door, so he ate the big depreciation hit and just kept in his garage for me for a couple years til I was ready :)

I also realize that I got pretty lucky, as he was a mid 30's married professional that probably didn't abuse it badly and had all maintenance records, owners manual, warranty on both the car and the add on's, garage kept... and it was post launch issues VIN

If you are careful and selective, you can get a great used deal. There was another with more mods, but I could just tell the guy probably abused it just from texting.

I had an even better deal on a perfect condition silver FRS, 14k miles, $17,000, but was heartbroken when I saw the automatic shifter.. was listed as manual. Just glad it was only 10 minutes from my work.

Used ones are popping up all over, I prefer to let someone else take the hit from driving it off the lot.

Things I could not live without after having them:
- Auto climate
- Heated Seats
- Proximity Key
- Spoiler

Proximity key and push button are probably my favorite. Makes the car "feel" more expensive.

I also suggest buying used.

I love my '13 sport tech !

This is EXACTLY how I feel/felt about keyless entry.
Recently I had to drive a rental for a few days and it made me realize how much I love that option !!!

This is also true but I feel like they aren't hot enough.

Kinda wasted but I really like the improved look of it

Also you get better sound system with navigation (unless things changed) and the spoiler is part of package it too.

At first I didn't wanted the sport tech model but since it was significantly less to buy the last left over '13 sport tech at my local dealer then a '14 base BRZ I went for it and I am really happy I did!

But I'm sure I would have loved a base model too ... :burnrubber:

navanodd 01-24-2015 08:51 AM

Nothing about the Sport tech makes or breaks the car.

I'm now addicted to proximity key and it'll be hard to get used to it if my next car doesn't have this feature.

The leather/alcantara seats are great, but really they're amazing seats no matter what is covering them. The heated seats are nice, but my commute last winter was too short for them to be effective and this winter I'm in school and barely using the car.

As for spoiler, definitely look into aftermarket options. I like the factory spoiler, but given the choice there are a few more that I like more.

Auto climate is useless here IMO, but it gives you nicer dials/switches.

whaiyun 01-30-2015 03:35 PM

I absolutely love...

Keyless
Heated Seats
Leather trim

Heated seats are on all the time nowadays :)

bababooey 01-30-2015 06:03 PM

the keyless feature was a must when i was shopping for a new car out of pure convenience, and the bluetooth streaming is almost on everything now. the spoiler, heated seats, and navs are a plus but werent necessary
